Castlevania needs to be Wii-invented

The post-Mario Kart lineup for the Wii is looking rather thin. The console’s immediate future seems devoid of any significant titles. Nintendo deserves some credit for the strength of its recent releases, which I’m sure will carry them through to another stellar month. Titles such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Boom Blox are certainly more impressive than recent exclusives for the PS3 and 360. That will probably change when Metal Gear Solid 4 and Ninja Gaiden II are released.

Most of what we know about the Wii’s lineup for the rest of 2008 and beyond is based on rumors and speculation. The few exceptions would be Mario Super Sluggers (yawn) and Wii Music. Some have speculated that E3 will bring official announcements of a new Kid Icarus game and perhaps a new installment in the Animal Crossing franchise. While Animal Crossing doesn’t really rev my engine, I do think that re-vitalizing a classic franchise is a smart move. However, I must admit that Kid Icarus wouldn’t be my first choice.

Which game is due for a Wii-invention?

Those that ignored the title and picture for this article can find out after the jump.

I love my original Nintendo. Even in today’s technologically advanced world, those 8-bit graphics are still gorgeous. I dust off the old soldier occasionally to re-live some of the greatest moments from my childhood. Mega Man 3 and Dragon Spirit are always part of the rotation, but Castlevania is usually first game I pop into the gray beauty.

There have been numerous Castlevania games over the years. I don’t know the exact number, but let’s just call it a lot. The series is even coming to the DS with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. I have been tempted to purchase Super Castlevania IV from the Virtual Console, but am currently conserving my Wii’s internal memory. A bit off topic, but I have never really understood that name. It should have been called Castlevania IV. I realize that “Super” demarcates that it is a Super Nintendo game, but it makes it seem like the game is some sort of special edition of a previously released Castlevania IV. Anyway, my point is, Castlevania would be the perfect classic game to bring to the Wii. Just think of the whip-like attachment for the Wiimote. It practically sells itself.

I can’t take credit for this idea. A Castlevania game for Nintendo’s cash cow has been passed around the Internet for quite a while. The topic came up last week when Patrick Klepek of the MTV Multiplayer blog spoke with the series’ producer, Koji Igarashi. Apparently, Igarashi isn’t keen on the idea of bringing the series to the Wii. The sticking point seems to center on how to use the Wii’s motion controls. Igarashi doesn’t like the idea of “whipping” the Wiimote around because he believes it will force players to exert too much energy. I find this to be a poor excuse.

In a mere matter of seconds, I came up with a few ideas to circumvent this problem. First, don’t require players to whip their arms like maniacs. Gamers are far less likely to wear down if only required to make a simple gesture. If a player finds the motions too strenuous, they could simply shorten their gaming sessions. I am looking at you aspiring jedi masters. Plus, with the recent release of Wii Fit, gamers should be in tip-top shape in time for the release of a new Castlevania game.

Igarashi said he sees the Wii “as a viable platform,” but isn’t sure he wants to bring Castlevania to the system. This news is disappointing, but there is always a chance that he will change his mind. Castlevania and Dracula’s Curse are two of my favorite games of all time. They never seem to get old no matter how much I play them. For now, it appears that I will have to hone my whip skills in front of the bathroom mirror. I would post a video, but I have better things to do. Actually, that’s a lie. I just don’t want to look like a moron.

The game would be no different than Twilight Princess, which despite being an excellent game, somehow was vilified for not having 1:1 motion for sword fighting.

If they chose to use a 1:1 whip mechanic for the wiimote, 2 major downfalls would occur:

1: It would be the most tiring adventure game you’ve ever played in your life. You’d have a stronger right arm after a month than a sexless teenaged boy living at the playboy mansion.

2: It would become a rhythmic gymnastics simulator.

Animal crossing Wii has allready been anounced.

The real question is if the game would be done in 2-D or 3-D. Personally, I think certain franchises, such as Mega Man, Street Fighter and Battletoads should never be done in 3-D. It could work for Castlevania, but it could also be a disaster.

      @ maul

I know the creator has talked about the next iteration of Animal Crossing during interviews, but I am not sure that Nintendo has made an official announcement.

you can store your VC games in an SD card if you have one.

Yea, but having to copy a game from the SD card to the Wii every time you want to play it is a pain.

    • RevNick86 says:

The creator already had a lengthy interview about how he’s failed so many times on a 3d castlevania. And that a Wii version would be another mistake citing the tiresome act of whipping the remote a million times an hour or so.

Miyamoto’s response for the Nintendo fans begging for more games: “Wait for E3″

      THIS BETTER BE WORTH IT!

anyway, castlevania isn’t excatly the first game i’d want revived on the Wii, Golden Sun Wii? yeah, now we’re talking!

    • Lord Butters I says:

Maybe have a toggle for 1:1 whip controls vs simple ones, that way whip enthusiasts could get what they want (think about that for a second) and the bulk of players could avoid carpal tunnel.

How about just a 2-D wii Castlevania without the motion control? the DS games are fantastic, so why a graphically lush adventure on the Wii (in 2-D)

Yeah I played the ps2 and N64 3-D castlevanias, they were ok but they did not ruly fell like the originals.

Castlevania III for the NES was the best!

I have to say, I too, still have a NES and I love it. I would have NO CHOICE but to get a Wii of my very own if Castlevania came out with a Wii game. Right now I just hork on my brothers.

I agree that keeping is 2-D is prefered. I wasn’t nearly as wild about the 3-D xbox Castlevania as I was the 2-D PSX version, SOTN, which is my personal favorite. I break out that game about once a year, play it 3 times, then put it away again. It just never gets old.

Animal crossing is an awesome game and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

P.S. And by play it 3 times, I mean beat it 3 times. Once on normal twice on Luck code. I could not tell you haw many hours I have spent in the upside down library killing schmoos…
