A while back, I needed a second Xbox 360 controller, so I bought one of the sleek black ones. This one soon became my controller of choice, simply because of the color. Sadly, a problem has recently appeared with my joystick. Now I didn’t think much of it until I was in a game with two other people with almost the exact problem.
Those are odds you can put money on.
Follow the jump for the details.
The problem with the controller is that if I push the joystick to a certain position, the movement will stick until I push in a different direction. It’s not especially obtrusive in many games, but in certain ones like GTA IV, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Mine sticks to the left, and of the two people who I’ve discussed these problems with, one sticks to the left, and one sticks forward.
So of course, I thought I would ask the community if they’ve run into this problem. Three people in the same room with similar problems seems a bit to coincidental to me.
Question: Are you experiencing problems with your Xbox 360 controller. (note what type of problem)
- Yes, with an Elite
- Yes, with a non-Elite Wireless
- Yes, with a non-Elite Wired
- No, with an Elite
- No, with a non-Elite
A forum poll has been set up, and I hope everyone out there can quash my fears of defective controllers.

Yes, i have problems with a black wireless controller bought seperately. The left thumb stick sticks to the right. It annoyed me and i turned back to my old crappy white one.

1. The left thumb stick keeps pushing up! (fallen of son many buildings in GTA cus of it!
2. The other controllers D-pad will not work with out a hefty ‘Click’

My Elite’s controller (that came with it) pulled to the left on it’s own. 1st noticed in R6V2 when I was trying to take cover and my guy would look out left with out me pushing it and getting me killed.
Then Niko just started walking around in Circles on his own.
Shipped it to M$ last week on my own dime - grrrrr.

My left thumb stick moves up if not manually re-centered on my white controller. I didn’t even realize it until playing Mass Effect when I noticed the Mako would slowly creep forward on its own. I think the stress on this sticks is wearing out the springs and causing them to drift. It sucks…but you can BET that M$ isn’t going to address the issue.

Oh, and mine was not even 1 month old yet.

Nope, no problems at all! (I have a standard white wireless controller - five of them. (Before you ask: it’s because I have two 360s, okay?))

Yes, with a non-Elite Wireless.
I’ve had two different non-Elite wireless controllers do that to me. They worked ok at first, but soon after it started happening. And I take very good care of my video games and equipment, so it’s not from mistreatment.

Yeah, with the standard controller.
It’s my left bumper button… half the time it just never “clicks” like how it should, meaning it doesn’t register it…
I can’t even BEGIN to tell you the number of times I’ve died on Halo/COD/GTA4 because I can’t reload/throw grenades/shoot…

Not had any problems with either of my controllers, had them for over a year now. Though, typically, I’ll go to play GTA tonight and I’ll end up with sticky-sticks :/
19 Mike Robinson // May 13, 2008 at 2:54 pm
btw that’s not a euphemism for anything
20 GrimResistance // May 13, 2008 at 4:19 pm
My non-elite wireless controllers left thumbstick sticks forward. Sucks in GTAIV when you’re on one of those cranes sniping and you accidentally walk right off it.

This post is funny cause Doc and I were just talking last night about the same problems we were having with our controllers … Both keep pushing up for some reason.
22 The Grizzard // May 14, 2008 at 7:48 am
I thought I was the only one with this problem. I’ve got an elite, and the thumb stick sticks at times. I wonder how long it will take for Xbox to notice this problem.

I have the same problem as alot of people. In GTAespecially I’m near the edge of a building with a sniper but then when I start aiming but choose to reposition, the left thumstick moves to the left on it’s own so I end up falling to the ground. Am using a black controller with white console

I don’t really want to buy a new controller because they are somewhat expensive at £35 each. Maybe if I have to get a new one I’ll buy a blue one
