Prey

(FPS)

Recommended by: Saccia of the Sarcastic Gamer community

Official Description: The game’s story is focused on Cherokee Domasi Tawodi, or “Tommy” for short, as he, his girlfriend, and grandfather are abducted aboard an alien spaceship known as The Sphere as it consumes material, both inanimate and living, from the Earth in order to sustain itself. Tommy’s Cherokee past allows him to let his spirit roam freely at times, and gives Tommy an edge in his attempt to stop the Sphere.

Price: $9.99 used

Platform: PC, Mac OS X, Xbox 360, Mobile Phones

Saccia says: Good story and interesting puzzles that make use of the game’s portals and Native American “spirit walking”. At $9.99 used, it’s a good deal.

Saccia also recommends: Uno (yeah seriously, he recommended freakin UNO….) – 400 MS Points ($5.00)

      Nice article Doc

    • I completely agree with Prey.
That has become my favourite 360 game to date. I loved it! I was completely addicted to the game and its story. I stand firmly behind the fact that so many other games seem to have their ideas from Prey… (click on my name to show all of the games I have found that had aspects of their game from Prey. Or read below…)

“I played through Prey today, and realised it is the “God of Gaming.” Everything you see in your high rated games, was in Prey first. Here’s a quick list (on the left: Game, on the right: What Prey had similar):

Portal: Prey used portals a lot, plus had a boss that was wired into the whole building that affected your way through it
Half life 2: You have a wrench, which is very powerful, and gravity plays a big part in the game.
Ratchet and Clank: Gravity walkways mean you can walk on walls (gravity boots in R&C)
Resident Evil: Mutants that when you blow their heads off carry on attacking you
Resistance: Humans being harvested and some converted to aliens that do work for the aliens in the buildings
Timeshift: Very similar looking gun, and gameplay as you move and fire with default gun is incredibly similar
Halo 3: Odd gooey substances that you have to go through (the orifices on the walls no, but the gooey tunnels and gooey holes in the floor, yes. (Last Level of Halo 3 is reference here).
Halo 3 again: Very similar first-person fighting (in space as well)
Assassin’s Creed: A hawk that shows you where you need to go. (Remember the hawks on the tops of buildings in AC, flying around?)
Gears of War: Very similar shooting while crouching
Halo: Big ship-building thing which you follow around whilst getting great views of outerspace before you have to fight off flying drones…
Mass Effect: Looks similar with the surroundings on the outside bits of the game
Portal (again): For some reason, there were cubes lying around that you could move around. They however would explode if shot

There are more I have not remembered, but just from the above you can see the amount of great games that seem to have ideas that come from Prey. Hmm…. I just noticed A LOT of similarities throughout the game. So many times I would say that something I saw was in another game that came out at a later date…

I believe that Prey is the creator of 21st century gaming as we know it. To think that Prey had the original Portal idea first. And they used it fantastically as well.. worked brilliantly throughout the game, and worked fantastically with the gravity changes…

Btw, if you want to try this game, it is worth buying. In the UK, it is 10 quid, and in the US, it will be around $15-20. Definitely worth buying. Looks great in HD.”

I am very impressed that it is $10. Definitely worth the buy.

Brilliantly compiled list. Kudos to you, Doc and the other contributors.

You can get Crash Bandicoot: Warped for the PSOne on the PSN. The first game of the series is only $6.99 (I think) on the PSN, so I assume the third game would be around or under $10.

    • Saccia says:

HEY!!!! UNO is a good game :-)
Got any other arcade game that’s actually been on the XBL top 10 list for *years* like UNO?

    • Riki says:

I bought a used copy of Advent Rising for $6.99 a while back, and it may be the best deal I have ever found on a game.

The story is very well done, and the soundtrack really adds some intense emotional weight to the already brilliant cinematics.

The gameplay is fun and challenging, with the hard difficulty level being tough enough for even the most experienced gamer. And even though it has some really awesome weapons, the real strength of the game is in the powers. There are 12 of them which are extremely varied and all fun and useful, yet balanced. It’s worth playing 2 or 3 times just to go through each scenario a different way.

For an added bonus, turn on the all powers cheat, and try to go through the game without using any weapons or driving the tank.

The only legitimate complaint I can come up with is that the 2 planned sequels will never be made.

I just bought Tori Emaki, and it’s pretty cool. It’s really nice to mess around with. It’s got me in the mood for more camera fun, so now I’m downloading mesmerize.

Prey is a great game but your going a bit overboard there Cod in the Pocket. “God of Gaming” lol

A lot of the things you mention have been done years before even Prey did them. You list Half Life 2 but that was out a year before Prey…

Anyway, Interesting article. I’m off to find that free PC game :)

    • II Defiant says:

Great article thanks Doc going to go pick up Prey today!

    • Ian says:

I think you missed “flOw” for the PS3. It is absolutely memorizing, immersive, the best use of the sixaxis controls to date, and it’s multiplayer.

    • Shidela says:

      I LOVE Geometry Wars.

Seriously, I spent hours upon hours playing that game. It was always fun playing it in weird ways, too. I lived in an apartment where we had a bunch of people come in and out all the time, and just play the game intermittently.

At one point we tried to see what kind of score we could get playing with our feet! I ended up finding something quite fun with that game– Have one person control the movement and another control the gun. One of my friends and I actually managed to play really well like that.

After writing this I realize how much of a dork I really am.
