SG’s Secret to Winning: Call of Duty 4

April 8th, 2008 · 19 Comments

Many of us who have played Call of Duty 4 have developed a keen awareness of what we like and dislike. While we chant from the mountaintops about the awesomeness of our selected gun, we make sure to call anyone who is using a different weapon a noob. Some take it further than that. I’ve found that there is a small selection of guns that go past the “noob” moniker. These guns and perks are called “cheap,” their use is complained about in the post-game lobby.  Crybabies?

My secret? I use all of them.

That’s right, I use the M16. What’s more is, I use the M16 with a Red Dot Sight and stopping power! The M16 has some defenders out there, I’m not one of them. I personally think it’s overpowered, but that doesn’t stop me from using it. I may feel a little dirty after mowing down 5 people with 3 pulls of the trigger, but at least they’re respawning and I just got my Air Strike.

It doesn’t stop there, though.

The Grenade Launcher, or as the crybabies call it: Noob Tube? I use it. In fact, I use a class with Overkill and two assault rifles with noob tubes that gives myself 4 grenades. P90 with Juggernaut? Check. I also use Martyrdom on that class. 3x Frag spam? You betcha. I’ve got that on two classes. Every now and then I also like to use a Light Machine Gun with Stopping Power and Deep Impact to just spray n’ pray to my heart’s content.

I’ve also been known to run into the office spawn point on Vacant with a Stun grenade pulled and Martyrdom on. Is that wrong? Probably. But is it fun? Hell Yeah.

Possibly the only class I have with which I challenge myself is my sniper class. M40A3 bolt-action with C4, Stopping Power, and Iron Lungs. The sniper is where I’m really at home, though, so it doesn’t really feel like much of a drop in killing power. When I snipe on any map besides Creek, it’s when I’m going for a support role. Ambush is the best example of this, when I cover B with my life. Of course, I don’t like to die, so I won’t hesitate to run from the kitchen when it gets too hot.

The only thing I don’t do is camp.

Now, you might say “But Animathias! You have to camp when you snipe!” Not in my mind. When you’re sniping, you’re vulnerable. Whether it be from a counter-sniper, or some mother hubbard sneaking up behind you, you’re a target. A big, brown, fuzzy target. Here’s what I consider camping: when a player with a Shotgun, SMG, or LMG sits in a corner and waits for someone to run through a door or around a corner. The only time you’ll find me in that position is when I’m reloading, or taking cover. Maybe it’s my ADD, but I just can’t sit still that long.

So there you have it, my dirty little secret. While I absolutely refuse to use glitches or exploits, I don’t play nice in Call of Duty. I’d rather be a cheap winner, than an honorable loser.

      people take it too seriously.
Also some people are just too good.

Haven’t played cod4 but I looks quite similar to css which I have played

more often than not I use the p90 with stopping power but I end up feeling guilty that I am doing so well almost as if I am cheating! so I try using a different gun and never do as well as when I’m using my trusty p90 so its never long before I am back using it. oh well I guess you gotta do what you gotta do!

pwn with honour? It’s hardly real life, fella.

      They do respawn, you know.

M16 + Juggernaut + 3 grenades + deep impact = killing machine. I use this combo all the time on every map and its pretty unstoppable. I know its wrong, but it feels so right. Plus I have a kill death average of 1.8 which I have strangely become rather protective of. I am the ultimate noob.

      “Ani,”

Do you realize what you just did? You described, what, about five wildly different, diverse strategies for the game? While people call these tactics “cheap,” you know all but the newbiest noobs use at least one of them as a goto strategy. You don’t think QA was using ALL of these tactics in test? In the short time that the beta was public, even, people had written guides on how to tailor your class for ultimate “cheapness.”

But honestly - I don’t think anything’s cheap that isn’t an actual technical glitch in the game. If its possible, do it! I’ll be the first guy to whine about your constant noob-tubing, but honestly, its all fair.

I use the m16 and stopping power.
And juggernaut only when using a shotgun.

but the reason why people really take offence when people use Juggernaut with P90 or Matrydom is because it IS less effective in serious competitive clan matches. It is because they are perks for noobs, which can kill noobs.

      Why don’t they work?
Juggernaut, 1 headshot your still dead. In professional competitive play you expect most shots to be headshots. Also why do you assume that you will need to take that extra damage? A good player wouldn’t expose himself to so much damage and would use stopping power/UAV jammer/ Sly hand to gain a genuine advantage over enemies.
The only excuse you have for juggernaut is with a gun like the shotguns which don’t have enough range to be effective. You may need the extra health to be able to run i closer and secure the kill.

Matyrdom is basing a perk on the assumption you are gong to die. Personally, i don’t die all that often on public matches, and if i was in a professional match i’d expect my opponents to be able to avoid a matrydom grenade with ease.
If you die because you suck so much at the game that you actually get kills with matrydom- feel free to use it.

P90; i don’t have much against tnhis but its ridiculous clip size makes it not suceptable to normal reloading vulnerability. Not to mention its huge range for an SMG. You can pretty much snipe with that thing.
But yeah it works admittedly, i just feel guilty using it when i know i could perfectly well not be quite as cheap and use any assault rifle and headshot a fair amount of the time. Feel free to use it, as it can be used effectively with skill, but just not with juggernaut.

The Noobtube is simply OP. I’m afraid anything which guarentess a kill at any range instantly and can shoot in an arc to enemy spawns on S and D.
Thank god i don’t have to put up with this in competetive play, IT IS BANNED IN ALL MAJOR TOURNAMENTS.

3 Frags is fine by me, so long as you can secure 2-4 kills with them. But it is frustrating when people suck to much to kill in 1 grenade so they place 3 all around you. A complete waste of Perk 1 when it used like that.

    • 11 Monkeyboo2 // Apr 8, 2008 at 4:33 pm

The point is that they are ineffective or in the noobtubes case completely OP.
Not cheap but extremely frustrating when you know you’ve just got killed by someone nooby enough to base a perk on the fact they die every 10 seconds.

      @Monkey

      I agree.

Martyrdom is only useful if you either intend to die or you bad enough at the game to die more then you kill. if you have a 1.0 or higher, and you use martyrdom, your not a noob, but you restraining yourself. If you have a .50 K/D then it might be worthwhile

3xFrag….dont mind too much…except when people blindly throw them. They assume the enemy is in a certain direction and they toss n pray. Then they get 1-2 kills….cmon. your embarassing yourself.

Monkey are you on ps3 or 360?

      360

well I for once have to admit I seriously abuse the X3grenade perk, there I said it, Its just so satisfying to get multiple kills from afar or without actually having to be there, just arc the bastard and it’ll do the job for you.
Now the M-16 is definitely overpowered, I mean Ive seen some ridiculous Kill-cam replays, you get shot on the leg and its as if your just got headshot. Oh well I use it too so why complain.
The one disturbing aspect of online gaming that it just really pisses me off, is the “camping” feature. Camping makes me realize that this jerk-offs which deserve to be castrated with fishing hooks, dont really enjoy the game. Why stay in that dark lonely corner the whole damn match picking off innocent by standers, it really kills the fun of shooting. One way a relieve my self from such an abomination of a tactic, is the genuine satisfaction you get when you pick one of these bastards from the back and you actually get the opportunity to toy with them before you kill them, ah I tell you its priceless. Theres so many ways you can kill them and its hilarious to know they have no idea, you can stunt them first, then unload a whole clip on them, or you can get a really easy headshot, you can slash the numb-nut silently, you can cook a grenade and toss it just in time, you can put a claymore in their radius let them know you are there and watch them blow up, or even better get some C-4 and manually blast them as soon as they notice you are creeping behind them.
oops that was long, well off to COD4 again.

      That’s brilliant! lol

Heh…I use stopping power on everything, unless i play hardcore.

P90, M14, M16, Barrett, and AK-47. Some of the strongest weapons in their classes, i pop on stopping power.

P90 and AK i use steady aim.

      Barrett i us iron lungs.

The other two get dead impact.

And of course, dont forget bandolier on every weapon. P90 from hell.

Also all of them but the Barrett i use a red sight scope.

wow did u come up with this ur self >.>

      ur not very clever

    • 18 Warrior_Warlock // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:57 am

On all classes I use fragX3, uav jammer, silencer (where possible) and last stand. I don’t understand the need for stopping power, most guns kill with a short spray anyway. I never bothered with the m16 because I don’t like its rate of fire, but now reading these posts I’ll have to give it a try to believe what is being said.

I only vary my perks with my sniper who has claymores (to cover my flanks), uav jammer and iron lungs. Or back when I still had certain challenges to complete.

My fav is uav jammer, I just use the radar to hunt people and they never see me coming. I’ve tried juggernaut but as mentioned a head shot instant kills anyway so I hardly noticed a difference. I tried running power on my shotgun but don’t want to be seen running on radar and if I pace myself I don’t need it anyway.

I agree that I hate dying from a grenade launcher but it doesn’t happen often enough to complain like a girl about it. Everyone gets a lucky kill sometimes.

What I hate more is lag, whether from someone else or, God forbid, me. Too often Ive sprayed an entire clip into someone only to get popped and see no action from my own avatar in the kill replay. Or seen no-one around only to have him jump right next to me and cap me.

Indeed there is a lot of lame ways to get kills in cod without needing any skills >_>

Which is why me and some of my m8s started using the Desert Eagle only! ^^,

It Takes some skill and getting used to , but believe me its works as you can even snipe with it O_o

Which is really awesome when you know the poor sob will have to watch the pwnage in killcam

      ^^,
