The immaculate 360 may be heading for RRoD

April 4th, 2008 · 36 Comments

FOREWORD: I do not expect anyone to give a crap about my 360 woes.  I am venting publicly in search of those who may have experienced similar problems.

I’m the only long-time 360 owner I know that hasn’t had the Red rings of Death.  But this evening, strange things are afoot at the Circle K.  The dang thing won’t stay turned off.  Every time I turn it off, it comes right back on within seconds and shows controller slot 1 is active.  Oh dear lord, could my immaculate 360 be on the verge of…  You know…  I can’t even think it.

None of my neighbors, that I know of, have 360’s, so that pretty much shoots the possibility of crossed paths in the foot.  I Googled the snot out of the topic but couldn’t really find anything to go on.  Has anyone experienced this?  Did your 360 do anything funky before it… you know.

Why did this have to happen on Day 1 of the new CoD4 maps?  Did EA track down my IP?  Are they jamming me?  Is my microwave somehow syncing with the 360?

If you have experienced anything like this, I would appreciate your comments below.  I don’t want the RRoD!  My 360 has been through a LOT.  My kids watch movies on it constantly.  It’s been moved a bunch of times.  It’s always been there for me.  Please God don’t let this be happening.  I’d rather have my car break down than my 360.

What the hell is wrong with me?

Nope, nothing strange happened to my RRoD’d system. I was watching a movie, turned it off, and when I turned it back on - BAM!
That was back in the day before anyone knew what a RRoD was. ;)
I saw you pop on and off a few times, so I was wondering what was up. Hopefully it’s just a phase.

    • 7 VinDali // Apr 4, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Mine sometimes goes on on it’s own too. I have the media remote and sometimes think maybe I bumped the power button grabbing the Cable remote, but I’m pretty sure I had not.
I don’t know what it could be Doc. Good luck!

Doesn’t sound good. Mine froze after an hour of playing for about a week and then one day when I reset it,BAM herpes… I mean RRoD

    • 11 Asprath // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Sucks, mines still going strong from Christmas 07. Amusing the controller isn’t on I have no idea why that would be happening. If it is on, might be the controller doing something funny. I would just unplug and clean everything.

    • 12 SBeezs // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:38 pm

This better not be a ploy to get out of playing us tomorrow Doc, we’re out for blood *insert mean face*

But, you’re not alone. My 360 is suffering from chronic crimson three quarter’s circle. So do like I do, break out the towel (or keep it on a towel) and keep that puppy alive until four pm tomorrow.

    • 13 frostsandx // Apr 5, 2008 at 12:11 am

My 360 is from the first week they were available and is still going strong. *fingers crossed* I had the same thing happen to me 5 months ago when I got done playing Gears. (got really scared it was a precursor as well) I’ve been using it like crazy lately, cheers to us who have avoided RRoD so far!

    • 14 Live4Him // Apr 5, 2008 at 12:23 am

I’ve never had a 360, but my best friend has had one since 06….or very early 07 because he bought it with the money he got for Christmas in 06. Anyways I’m pretty sure nothing like that happened to his, but he hasn’t really had the REAL RRoD yet, even though the thing does go RRoD, he says it’s not real because the disc drive still works….it just won’t show anything on the screen until he wraps it in 3 towels for 20 minutes and overheats it then cools it off for 5 minutes lol. Thought that towel trick might be useful in case…well….you know…

    • 15 Doc // Apr 5, 2008 at 12:35 am

Figured out the problem Had a controller at the other end of the house that got stuck on.

    • 16 DJ Res // Apr 5, 2008 at 8:07 am

      Doc,
Good to hear you figured it out!
However, I am also a long time 360 owner (May 06) with no RRoD (knockin’ on wood!!!). Lately, I’ve had to disconnect my messenger kit because the whole system freezes and I have to hard reset anytime a button is pressed on the keypad. Getting really scared that this may be the begining of the end for my ‘baby’. Anyone else have this problem?

    • 17 dieter // Apr 5, 2008 at 11:01 am

Just wondering, Could I avoid the RRoD if maybe I used one of those a/c surge protectors/power managers? I mean my old man has one powering his pc. and that box goes nuts sometimes, but it’s never shut down in 2 years.

    • 18 Atomic Flapjack // Apr 5, 2008 at 11:42 am

Dieter, A surge protector won’t help with a RRoD… It will only keep your box alive if lightning strikes it or something like that.

Why is it only three rings of death, why not all four?

    • 20 darkwonders // Apr 5, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Now’s a perfect time to be the last of the trio to buy a PS3, doc!

    • 21 mine just died // Apr 5, 2008 at 1:01 pm

Every 360 has his time Sean, yours has come!!! Mwahahahahhahahahahhahahaha!!!1111!!one11!!!elevenoneoneeleven!!11!

    • 23 PrinceGaming // Apr 5, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Mine kept freezing after a minute or so, after about 5 rounds of this I got the RRoD. Glad to hear it’s just the controller.

@Chuck Norris - the different section combinations mean different faults, I think the official meaning of 3 is a severe hardware failure.

    • 24 Saccia // Apr 5, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Doc, I think I know what’s wrong. Xbox Live is Alive. Your 360 has developed its own consciousness and it fears being disassembled. The only solution is to feed and care for your new pet by playing games and movies on it 24×7. The Wii thought it had something cool with WiiConnect24. How can the Wii top with the advent of the new XboxLiveAlive service?

    • 25 Julio D // Apr 5, 2008 at 4:07 pm

hey whats up im in a similar situation my xbox has been working perfectly for about a year and a half, more than any of my friends xboxs, but ever since wednesday, it freezes up on me in the middle of the game, it happened in cod4 and bioshock, im afraid!!!!!!!

    • 26 Julio D // Apr 5, 2008 at 4:08 pm

but if in fact my xbox dies, im getting a new one! dont sell out Doc!!!!!

    • 27 DemonicDerek // Apr 5, 2008 at 4:15 pm

    • 28 Typhoon // Apr 6, 2008 at 2:11 am

good to hear it worked out for ya me personally play station fan ps3 has done no rong with its awsome graphics so to those who play the 360 and suffered the RRoD join the real gamers on ps3 =]

    • 29 SarcasticSparki // Apr 6, 2008 at 7:37 am

Doc, I’ve actually had this problem.. Where I turn off my (still yet to RRoD for good) xbox, and a second later it turns on. It’s happened a number of times, and the most recent was last night. I’ve never taken a look to see if the controller lights are on, but since one GH is always plugged in.. at least one light prob is on.

I know by box is on it’s way out, it has red ringed, to the point that I have a RRoD Help Ticket openned up… but on reboot it’s fine. The damn thing (which is nicknamed “Rocky”) won’t stay down. So I figure I’ll continue to play as that’s more fun than waiting weeks for it to get fixed.

I’m from the uk and mine is currently still going strong since May 06 I’m chuffed but I kinda want it to die so I can get an elite lol

    • 31 Webby // Apr 6, 2008 at 11:20 am

I am still on my launch console and its going strong with no probs. its caked full of dust and has been dropped on the floor few times.

Maybe that is the secret. lol

    • 32 fotios // Apr 6, 2008 at 11:34 am

that sure does suck. i used to think mine was untouchable to. i had one of the first production line and it lasted so long. while everyone else’s were dying mine stayed true to me. that is until crackdown, then it all went to hell.

now im on my fourth system, and while they say the problem probability is down, i still fear every time the disk makes a weird sound

    • 33 bupnicplague95 // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:15 pm

ya that happend to me but i found out that there someting pushing the button on my contorler so thats my story

    • 34 darkwrld // Apr 6, 2008 at 3:13 pm

I’ve had an intreasting time once when my Xbox 360 did the same thing it turned out it was some stupid problem with a video transmitting device in the house..

    • 35 Doc // Apr 6, 2008 at 3:14 pm

      @ Webby

I think that you may really be onto something. My kids use my 360 HARD. They’re 4, 3, and 2 and have no knowledge of the word gentle. Maybe that’s it…. Maybe 360’s don’t like being babied.

If that’s the case, mine ought never go down.

Of course it doesn’t explain Lono’s. Every time he gets killed in a game, his 360 knows something bad is going to happen.

    • 36 FlintSteelton // Apr 6, 2008 at 8:20 pm

I’ve had a 360 since Jan 2007 and it hasn’t RROD’d yet. I’ve heard it’s the processor warping the board. I don’t know if the Falcon chipset helps it out with the heat, but I have one of the old Zephyr chipset. We shall see if it dies out before the warentee is over.
