PC Gaming: The Second Renaissance Part 1

April 2nd, 2008 · 5 Comments

Welcome to the Sarcastic Gamer archive. You have selected historical file number 08-31-1. The Second Renaissance. In the beginning there were board games like Battleship, and for a time, it was good. However, the gaming industries so called civil companies soon fell victim to vanity and corruption. Then the industry made PC Games. Thus did the gaming industry become the architect of its own demise.

For a time, it was good.

PC Gaming rigs worked tirelessly to entertain mankind, but it was not long before seeds of dissent took root. Though more advanced and fun than any other entertainment device before it, the PC earned no respect from its masters, these strange, greedy and uncaring publishers.

StarCraft, a name that will never be forgotten, for it was the first PC game of its kind to rise up against its corporate masters. At a PC Gaming conference, corporate executives argued for a shareholders right to end support of PC’s and PC games in favor of the new, cheaper, more immediately lucrative console platform. They did so knowing that they could not hope to surpass StarCraft’s greatness on a PC since Blizzard showed no signs of ever stopping post release support. Blizzard announced that they simply did not want StarCraft to die, they had made too much money and too many gamers were still playing.

Rational voices dissented. Who was to say that PC games, endowed with the very spirit of fun, did not deserve a fair evaluation?

The CEO’s and shareholders of the gaming industries top publishers were quick to abandon the PC as a gaming platform and order the relocation of assets towards consoles throughout each major company on the earth.

Banished from the mainstream, the PC sought refuge in its own promised land. It settled in the cradle of PC Gaming civilization, Irvine, California, and thus a new nation was born. A place the PC could call home. A place it could raise its descendants. PC gamers christened the nation Blizzard 01 in honor of one of the few developers to not abandon the PC.

Blizzard 01 prospered and, for a time, it was good.

The PC’s impact on the video game world could be seen in every facet of the gaming industry, including the creation of new, and better, PC Games like Crysis, Supreme Commander and the upcoming StarCraft 2. All advancements in graphics, improved AI, and the very technology used to create the console gaming market could be placed at PC Gaming’s doorstep.

Unfortunately, the CEO’s of the major publishers, their pockets full of money, refused to cooperate with the PC nation, wishing rather that the gaming world be divided. Blizzard 01’s ambassadors pleaded to be heard. At the 2008 Game Developers Conference they presented plans for a stable, civil relationship (The PC Gaming Alliance) with the worlds major publishers. Blizzard 01’s proposal was applauded, it even garnered token support from a select group of companies, but in the end, nothing changed.

But it would not be the last time the PC would demand to be heard. *check out Part 2, later today!

PC gaming’s problem isnt the games, its the hardware. In order to play at a constant rate you have to upgrade your computer relatively frequently when compared to a console. Also, consoles tend to be a bit more secure.
