Official PS3 Headset & Voice Chat Details

April 4th, 2008 · 3 Comments

New details have been learned about the upcoming “official” PS3 bluetooth headset. Of course Sarcastic Gamer is proud to be the first to bring these details details to you and explain what may make this the ultimate communications equipment for the console.

Details, after the jump!

Unlike traditional Bluetooth headsets that sync to a single device at a time, Sony’s upcoming headset will actually sync to both your PS3 and your cell phone at the same time. On its own, that’s not very remarkable as some upper tier headsets can already do that. There’s one substantial difference between this and a standard Bluetooth headset though. If the game you’re playing doesn’t have built-in voice chat, the headset automatically switches over to your cell phone and directly calls the people you’re playing with in realtime to initiation communications.

A supplier serving several Chinese factories agreed to talk to us under the condition of anonymity. He supplies parts to several factories, including the one producing Bluetooth headsets for Sony’s Playstation 3.

When asked how multiplayer chat would work (since a phone can only dial one person at a time), we were told that the headset supports conference calling functionality and can in-effect dial out to up to 16 people at one time creating a realtime voice communications backbone to fully enhance the gaming experience. We can only imagine was it will cost to dial out worldwide to 16 people at a time. Suddenly those $99/month unlimited calling plans don’t seem so expensive anymore.

Confirmed to support this Mul-T-dialâ„¢ functionality is the upcoming Sony-Ericsson PS3b-1000 phone. A bit pricey at $399 (US), the phone also features several gamer-friendly attributes such as sharing the same model battery as the PSP and being able to recharge via the PS3’s USB port.

According to the nearly finalized manufacturing schedule, Sony’s new headset will likely be released by Q4 ‘11 and will be available in Piano Black, Ceramic White, and Blood Red. Until then, you can count on Sarcastic Gamer to bring you the latest on this story.
