It was cute at first, to see the factions arguing over whose console was the best. It was kind of fun to sit back and watch them argue over who would be the winner of the next gen war. Now, I can’t go to N4G without seeing stories about why this console or that console will win. Heck, I can’t even log into my own site without seeing that stuff. What the hell does that even mean to these hardcore fans?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The console(s) that end up losing the battle aren’t going anywhere, unless there’s a rout. Looking at the current sales numbers, no one is getting routed.
Maybe what we should be worrying about is whether the console you chose to invest money and time in will lose so badly that it ends the whole thing ends prematurely. I’m looking at you Xbox. Then all you truly have is a paper weight and you have to go buy another console before you planned to, so you can play the new titles. I still feel bad for the souls that bought the Dreamcast or decided HD-DVD was the way to go. Maybe that’s all the fanboy flame wars are all about, fear of losing.
If your console does win, what do you get? Did PS2 users get a certificate, or a medal. Did Phil Harrison crap in a box and send it to them? NO! Did Dreamcast owners get a bag of lemons? NO! The lemon came in a box. Actually, it was a good system, the joke just worked there.
If you console does or doesn’t dominate the others, isn’t all that matters is that you enjoy yourself. Leave the superiority debate to professionals… and surely not to anyone around here.
JUST GAME DAMNIT!

Very true Dave, if either one goes in a complete retreat the other will be cheap enough by the time it happens that nobody will care.
Both consoles have to big a following to go down fast enough to get blown away in one shot.

Nah, the glory of rubbing it in random internet asshat’s face is sometimes MORE fun than actually playing video games.
I intentionally wanted to get all three systems so I would have access to _all_ the great games. What I _really_ got was a system I hate (but with some games I like), a system I like (but without enough games yet), and the Wii… a waste of my time, money, and storage space… oh wait… I got mine for free, it’s in my son’s room now and my kids _occasionally_ play it because I stuck it on a different TV from my PS3 and 360. Yeah, I’m absolutely indifferent about the Wii I guess… I sure know _I_ never turn it on. I occasionally turn it off though, when the kids forget to.
One thing _I_ find funny about the console wars and commenting on them are the people that seem to hate the whole thing but just can’t quite stay the heck out of it themselves. I laugh a lot at those folks. At least I know what I’m getting into and do it by choice.
Them on the other hand… the quote from The Godfather comes to mind… “Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in!”
It may _look_ like I get worked up, but I don’t… I can call someone an ignorant asshat with the utmost nonchalance imaginable. LOL!

Yeah, I see the point of the arguement. I’ve been on the same side multiple times as well as arguing that one console is worse than the other. It’s ridiculous because if you look at specs one console will be better than the others, but in the end doesn’t matter because some fans are loyal to one brand, and don’t care what has a better build.
I personally am a Nintendo fan from the age of three. I got a Wii, I love it, could use more hardcore titles, though. It’s not the best tech wise, excluding the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. (Which current rumors from Microsoft are putting the Wii’s advances in jeparody.) It’s all about perception.
The PS3 and 360, seem to have their ups and downs and I’m going to be getting a PS3 soon, because I personally hate Microsoft with a burning passion. It has nothing to do with the console itself just the people who put their name on it. It may seem shallow but it’s true. All based on perception.
You can’t stay on the arguement if you hate on it it’ll rub people the wrong way and get them running their mouths, if you participate then it has the same effect. People love to fight! let it be!

I still say SNES was the best system ever!
And on a more serious note. I use to own every single Nintendo console untill the Wii. See why I became a Xbox fan wasn’t even cause of like the usual games like Halo (even though I love it now) Or Fable ect ect. I got The Original Xbox for one reason. It had four ports for the controllers when I placed Conflict: Desert Storm Coop.
Thats it.
I didnt get it for movies the games the Console wars nothing like that. Just cause I wanted to play coop with my three buddies on a game. Sounds weird but its true.

It’s the John Gabriel Dickwad theory in full effect, people just feel the need to spout off about it.
The parody of it you guys use in the show cracks me up everytime and I usualy comment in fanboy too and fro’s with a comment about my fridge being totally better than their fridge. It just seems to rile people up when someone speaks bad about a system that they own, often backing it up with more fanboy-esque comments about why there system is better.
Personally, I own a Wii and a 360. Gametime is probably spread 70/30 on the 360 at the moment. Having a look at my games selection, the only Wii games I own are only available on the Wii. Would I get a PS3? Hells yeah, would just have to not eat for a while to be able to afford one.
As it says in my forum signature “I play games, not consoles”. I couldn’t care less which piece of plastic I stick my disk of plastic into, as long as I enjoy the game

And I ahve been a fan ever since. Not an always happy fan but a devoted one.
But as for why I don’t play much PS. I feel that the brand takes it self way to seriously. Like gaming needs to be made into like some kind of life support system that we have no choice but to resort to it for any little thing.
I never owned neither of the systems either because I feel that the PS brand is the type of console you go over to your friends house to play for a half hour, and your good for a month.

It does matter if a system I own goes under, but it’s not like the fanboys will be able to keep their systems afloat by picking fights online with other fanboys. That is all about personal gratification and the argumentative nature of @$$holes everywhere.
There is actually another reason why we should care about who is successful and who fails miserably. When companies succeed they continue with strategies and business practices that worked for them. When they fail, they try to correct their mistakes. If we like the direction in which a company is taking gaming, we should want them to succeed. If we do not like what they are doing we should want them to get burned.
That doesn’t mean we should have these pointless arguments and unhealthy emotional attachments to a particular brand. But it does mean that we should vote with our wallets and support the guys who get it right.
The sad part is, a lot of these fanboys are so mindless in their devotion that they can’t even consider the other options and will accept whatever scraps their chosen corporate masters throw at them.
The dreamcast is a great example. I love my dreamcast. I still use it regularly. I am happy with it, though it would have been nice if it held out a year or two longer. It was a great system with great games, but too many people (particularly the casual gamers) were so blinded by the Sony label that they didn’t even bother to look at what Sega had to offer. Everyone I talked to was shocked when I explained what they were missing out on. The classic example was when my brother told me he wanted a PS2 because “in a year you’ll be able to play it online” and I stopped him there because I was playing online at that very moment.
Fanboyism isn’t just annoying, it’s destructive. It interferes with the ability to make intelligent consumer decisions, and that drags down the entire market.

10 Richard // Apr 16, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Some strong feelings here, but also a little melodramatic.
Fanboyism didn’t kill the dreamcast, it was Sega (or more accuratly their rubbish marketting). Sony are the masters of advertising and after the PS1 you would have thought they’d have learnt somthing. Nintendo finally did!
Somone like yourself who appreciates gameplay over marketting rubbish is bound to get annoyed at fanboys but they’re not the cause of the problem just the result of it: That advertising seems to sell more games than gameplay.
Anyway it don’t bother me because Orange Box, Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 have sold shedloads, the first two are from developers I’ve been ranting about for a decade now. Good times
11 theps3fanboy // Apr 16, 2008 at 8:09 pm
I don’t like this article and i think many have a misunderstanding of what a fanboy usually is. yes there are those who choose to blindly follow one console and buy all the crap that the sells, be it the zapper, an hd-dvd player, or a sixaxis controller. however many you three console owners don’t realize that fanboyism comes from the ability to own only a single console ya rich bastuds!
yeah some of you a$$holes don’t realize that not all of us can go out and dump roughly fifteen hundred dollars to “play all the best games”. i for one am in college, get paid minimum wage, and have to pay off a car, so deciding on one console doesn’t mean im being loyal to one brand but means im trying to get the best bang for my hard to come by buck.
this is where fanboyism really comes into play. so i have my one console and online play is the standard, so OBVIOUSLY i want other people to play that same console, i.e. my friends. so whats wrong with me running around touting the awesomeness of my system and how its soooo much fing better than that other piece of crap they dare call a next gen system. am i not getting more people to play videogames, am i not getting others to join in on the videogame revolution, sure i may have convinced others to choose another system over the one they currently have but im still, by being a fanboy, putting somesone’s money into a medium that i (and obviously you) care about?

13 Riki // Apr 16, 2008 at 8:51 pm
@ richard
Sega certainly could have done better in the marketing department, but it is ultimately the job of the consumer to make an informed decision. If they won’t even bother to take five minutes to compare their options, they are not only doing themselves a disservice, they are negating the market forces that make capitalism work.
Sony’s initial success was due mainly to people jumping from PS1 to PS2 based on hype and name recognition. Had they actually been paying attention, many would have chosen the DC. Sega might have still lost, but it would have stayed in longer.
@ theps3fanboy
I’m poor, and I’m no fanboy. And many fanboys do buy all consoles. They’re the worst of them all. Just because someone can’t afford to buy everything they want doesn’t mean they have to turn into an insecure, loud mouthed, whiny b!t&#.
And no, you are almost certainly not getting more people to play games by being a fanboy. You do not have the resources to influence anyone into dropping hundreds on a console that they weren’t going to buy anyway. If you did, I’m sure you wouldn’t be poor, as you would be making millions in the marketing racket.
14 theps3fanboy // Apr 16, 2008 at 10:24 pm
@Riki
yeah, ok. you don’t understand what the fanboy truly is. its stereotypical to see a fanboy as a “loud mouthed, whiny b!t&#”. im non of those things and neither are many of my fellow fanboy friends (even Xbots, GASP!).
and YES i CERTAINLY am getting people to play my console of choice, by being a goddamn fanboy. one example being my friend dale from Iraq who loves COD4, and played it at my house non-stop and was convinced, by me having the system and by me inbedding fanboy propaganda into his head, to buy a ps3. second example being my friend josh who has a Wii, oh the tears he cried when he found out that manhunt 2 and no more heroes suck mcballs. but by showing him cod4, and showing him bluray quality movies, and showing him screens of metal gear solid 4, and spreading the good word of sony, hes going to buy the mgs4 bundle when it comes out. Oh and neither of them were planning this purchase before i showed them the light.
and dude seriously, you dont need a degree in marketing to get someone to buy something, give me a break.

ps3fanboy: We can all be thankful that those poor unfortunate friends of yours have been turned away from their misdeeds. No longer can they enjoy their consoles just because they want to, now they fully understand the importance of having the “right” console, which of course is defined as being “the console that you, personally, own”. I’m sure they’re sleeping better at night.
And to think, some people need to put on costumes to fight injustice. You just play COD. Your maleness impresses me.

We are gamers and while I agree in the fault Lono finds in the argument I have another question:
Why do we care?
Does it matter which system sells more? Will that actually, individually, affect anyone on this site? If Microsoft sells a million more consoles in April than Sony does that matter? Do we have stock in the companies? Will my wife be relieved if Sony sells more consoles than Microsoft for four continuous months?
Do we really not have anything better to do than wrap our egos around which system out performs the other? I mean, if that is the important thing…
I guess (after work and school) I’ll just go home and play a game. On what console I’m not sure, but I’ll just simply play a stupid video game and enjoy myself.
But then I’m a “b!tch” if I play it on Microsoft’s system and something equally exciting if I play it on my PS3…
Do we really not have anything more important to spend our time on? We purchased a system: either feel good about it or don’t. The choice is yours.
Why do we care?

19 theps3fanboy // Apr 17, 2008 at 6:24 am
@Aaron
im sorry you misunderstood me, but i can understand why. i don’t think there is a right console, there are just the consoles i can afford, everything else is going to be less important to me because it isnt availiable, if i could i would have every single good console ever made with all the best games for each of them, but that… wont… ever… happen. and as i said before i will try to get others to play the console that i can afford, not the console that is “right”. also i was just making the point that if it werent for my fanboyism two people would not be buying consoles and two consoles sold is better for video games than two consoles sitting on the shelf regardless of what system is being bought
oh and putting on a certain costume does not mean your fighting injustice, it just means some is paying you to be there.
@ tweepe
i really do agree with you but your arguement can be associated with any type of medium of entertainment. and can you truly define what is time “better” spent?Ithink choosing to do something that makes you happy is whats really in your best interest whether it be defending your console, your sports team, your canidate, your whatever. you wanna go save the world by all means do it, but i wanna play GTA4 and argue on the internet, thats what makes me happy.
@riki
though my dreamcast was awesome you can’t argue that it was better than the ps2, it just had A LOT of better games… but it also came out a year before. 56k online was fun at first, but it wouldn’t have held up, especially with the lack of voice chat. and plus the lack of a dvd player really put one foot in the grave.
@LJ

22 FlintSteelton // Apr 17, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Having all 3 systems does change your perspective on the console wars. I do play 360 more since most of my friends do, but having the other two systems means I can play Smash Brothers Brawl and MGS4. I used to be a hardcore Nintendo fan, but once I started accepting other systems, I started actually having fun with all the games out there. I still have some Final Fantasies to catch up on.
From what I’ve actually experienced, being a fanboy is hard once you have all the options available. If there’s a multiplatform game, I try to decide which port I would have the most fun with and which one runs better.
Keep an open mind about the games on any system. Just because you don’t have the other systems doesn’t make them bad. Each one has it’s flaws, and each ones the benefits. Being able to notice and admit those is what I would consider a true gamer.
