Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Time to bury MK for good?

April 21st, 2008 · 9 Comments

Oh, how I miss the arcades of my childhood. I miss the sound of Indiana Jones pinball machines, the obviously lopsided pool tables, the cries of frustration when some unlucky gamer realized that only one of the guns for Terminator 2 worked (everyone knows only one gun EVER works), but most of all, I miss fighting games.

Back in the glory days of arcades, fighting games reigned supreme. While Street Fighter was almost always the favorite, Mortal Kombat had its own appeal thanks to its excessive gore and the infamous fatalities. Over the course of sixteen years, Mortal Kombat has taken on several variations, moving from arcades to PC’s to consoles, but never a crossover with another fictional universe. Whereas Street Fighter has done the crossover thing more than once, Mortal Kombat never has, until now.

Find out all the crazy crossover details after the jump!

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Mortal Kombat ever since I first heard “get over here!” Street Fighter was always superior in terms of difficulty, combos and speed, but Mortal Kombat had that visceral appeal that kept me coming back for more. For the longest time nothing really changed with Mortal Kombat, until Deadly Alliance hit. That game, IMO, raised the quality of the franchise tremendously. Not only did it still have all the gore and insanity of its predecessors, it had multiple fighting styles and a combo system that kicked some serious ninja ass. Then Deception came out and I remember thinking “sh*t yeah! Keep making MK games like this!”

Alas, my hopes quickly died. Shaolin Monks was lame, Unchained was traded back within a week and Armageddon was one big resounding “meh.” Then I caught wind of a new MK title and I got psyched…sorta.

Trying once again to reinvigorate the franchise, Midway has announced Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Seriously, Sub Zero vs. Batman. So not only is Midway trying to bring back MK fans who have not had a bonafide hit to play since 2004, their trying to add DC comic book fans to their list of followers. Which is either a brilliant strategy or a recipe for disaster.

Besides the obvious addition of some of the most beloved DC characters of all time, like SuperMan and Batman, there’s a laundry list of changes coming for this latest MK title. Are you fan of MK’s bloody M rated predecessors? Of course you are, you can’t be an MK fan and NOT want to see spines ripped out and heads decapitated. Well, sucks to be you. MK vs. DCU is not going to be an M rated title. Apparently the idea of Superman tearing Lui Kang to pieces is not in keeping with how Superman fans see their overpowered idol. I guess we’ll have to suffer through yet another “villain kidnapping someone close to Mr. Kent”, “miraculous acquisition of kryptonite by said villain”, “we haven’t seen the last of him” type scenario.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a Superman fan, but come on! Let the man of steel throw down!

I totally agree about the T rated thing - MK without being incredibly bloody and having fatalities seems pointless.

It’s like Ed Boon and Midway are sitting around trying to thinks of ways to bury the franchise. First they tamper with the fatalities in Armageddon and now they completely remove them from the new game. Removing the blood, gore and fatalities from a Mortal Kombat game is like removing the cheese and meat from a sandwich. In the end, all you are left with is bread and lettuce (and no one wants that). And why the DC universe? At least shoot for Marvel. Everyone knows Marvel crushes DC. And why not an MK vs. Street Fighter game? I know Capcom would have to get involved, but at least give it a try Midway.

Start buying the black roses, it is not Mortal Kombat if there are no fatalities, don’t try to argue, it’s true.

I enjoyed the original, but not as much as street fighter. I have tried many of the subsequent games, and all were disappointing, even with my low expectations. I won’t say that this Kan’t be a good game. Stranger things have happened. Only two of them (in 1841 in Aberdare Wales, it rained fish, and in 2006 the Wachowski brothers were allowed to make another movie) but they did happen.

The Klose Kombat sounds like Krap to me. I just don’t see how switching to a second, separate fighting system Kould be more fun than having a single, Konsistent, Komplex, and fun fighting system. And the same goes for the falling fights.

Mortal Kombat has always been about gore over gameplay, so taking that out doesn’t leave you with much. And adding in DC characters will only highlight the Krappiness of MK’s characters and story. Konsidering that even A-list Kharacters in DC are barely worthy of Saturday morning Kartoons (Batman being the only occasional exception) to be in danger of being overshadowed by their B-list is pretty sad.

Kall me when they make DOA vs. Buffyverse, Halo vs. Stargate, or Grand Theft X-wing.
