The Metal Gear Beta begins today and I am still not fully signed up. The download and installation of the Beta took me over an hour… I have repeatedly attempted to download the updated version 1.01. That took me over two days and a couple of dozen attempts to finally complete.
The next step? Getting your Konami ID. Let’s just say, as far as I know, it’s not actually possible.
More ranty goodness, after the jump!
Why, oh why, can’t my PSN ID suffice? Why do I have to sign up for a Konami ID? Why, Konami, why?
Yes, I know it’s free. Yes I know that they’re trying to gather information on the Beta. The only problem? It’s fracking impossible to get an ID. Believe me, I’ve tried.
I first attempted to use the web browser on my PS3 to sign up. If you’ve gone online with a PS3, then you know what I’m going to say next. Using your PS3 to browse the internet is like swimming in jello. Sure it looks cool and works just fine, but good luck actually getting anywhere fast. It just doesn’t work right.
My next step, was to use my computer’s internet connection. That was just a no-go. No matter how many times I tried to sign in, I would always time out when I tried to click over to the next page in the never ending process. When I say time out, I mean that is what Konami’s webpage was telling me. I wasn’t actually taking long, in fact, I would input the same information so many times into the same screens, that I became pretty good at it, to the point of being able to enter all of my personal information in world record time, just so I wouldn’t “time out,” when I attempted to go to the next step.
There’s no rhyme or reason for it. As far as “Betas” go, this has been rigawddamndiculous. As this was my first Beta on the PS3, I’ve got to say that I was woefully unprepared for the sheer ineptitude of the whole process. The worst part? I’m still not even signed in. Way to go, Konami.
The bottom line, if someone has any tips, send it on over, because as of the time this hits the internets, I’ll still be trying to input my address into the online forms…
Timed out again! Arrrgghh!
[Update] - Well, I’ve finally been able to get my Konami ID, but after 36 hours, I still haven’t received my confirmation email, even though I’ve gone back to the site and requested additional ones. I’ve even changed my email address, thinking that I input it incorrectly or something. Still no confirmation email…

I have a feeling that opening up the beta to the EU region was probably a mistake.
Here they were planning a closed beta with a finite number of golden tickets.. then someone decides to just leave Chocolate Factory gates unlocked… Silly Oompa Loompas…

I was able to get it all done saturday night. I left the update download on from 4:30 am to around 3. (I was doing the P2P one and wanted to help other people download it)
Hmmm I would have suggested that you type in your information again when you have it registered already to get the confirmation email, but I guess you already tried that. When I first registered, it didn’t want to save anything but my usernames and konami password. I had to retype in everything else including my email that it gets sent to. I got it to send to gmail. So if you haven’t tried a gmail account yet, I would suggest doing that.
oh and they bumped the beta back to starting this friday because of server issues…

Firefox + autoformer addon ftw
Oh and the beta has been delayed across all regions because of too much traffic, so you still got time.

Question…
If the game title is Metal Gear Solid 4, then why is the article titled “MSG4?”

It’s probably a stress test…or they’re trying to see how devoted rabid PS3 fanboys are.

I got everything set up… for the 1.01 patch just set the P2P and went to bed, it was done in the morning.
For the Konami ID garbage, it took several tries… I just used Firefox with no special extensions. I got my email confirmation instantly. It said it should be there, I clicked over to the Gmail tab, and it _was_ there.
I’ll be glad when the “final” game is out and we don’t have to do all this crap…

Ok, looks like that SOMEHOW, I created a duplicate account using the same email… Just tried a third email address and it worked. i finally was able to verify my ID.
What a broken and crappy experience.
Thanks Konami!

I really, REALLY hope that the Konami ID isn’t used in the final MGO.
If it is I’m going to have to hurt someone, and it’ll probably be Kojima.

after downloading mgsonline beta and then reading all this, i have decided to just wait until the full game is here. its only gonna be a month or two and it will be worth the wait.
