IGN shines light on boycott. EA: “Announcement Coming”

April 9th, 2008 · 35 Comments

IGN delivered the news of the BF:BC Boycott to its vast readership today, and also managed wrangle about as close to a quote from EA as anyone has heard, regarding the issue.

From this article:

We contacted EA again today to see if their policy or specifics of the pricing had changed with the recent public outcry. While we weren’t able to get a direct quote on the subject, we were told that EA Games is listening to the feedback of gamers and has an announcement in store for next week with regard to the pricing for the Gold Edition weapons.

I certainly hope that we can soon put this behind us. EA’s announcement should be what we used to call in the Coast Guard, a clear and obvious change of course. Personally, a reiteration of their broken position would nauseate me. Otherwise, I’m sailing on the S.S. Hellno until we run aground.

Props to IGN for reporting on “La Resistance.” They are certainly in the minority for coming to our aid on this issue.  Something I can’t say with regard to some of their corporate peers.

      The wheels keeps turning….Whos left?

Shall we direct our email cannon at CNN next lol. Or should we threaten EA with FOX news.

    • 3 Dr00py3recti0n // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Now hopefully EA will come to there senses (assuming they had any to begin with) and put an end to poking their customers with pitchforks in the hope pennies will fall out, put this with Rock band costing an arm and a leg…i can safely say EA are off my Christmas card list, GOOD DAY, ELECTRONIC ARTS…

    • 4 Saccia // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:08 pm

We don’t need Fox news… Leigh Alexander already took care of putting out uninformed, insulting, trash news.

So when is the SG Team scheduled to be on AOTS? I figure it’s only a matter of time before the invitation to the Loop is offered…

Hi, this is EA, um, remember us… Yeah, we kinda fucked up before.

      Sorry :(

Anyway, we’ve decided to add all the playable weapons to the $60 retail game. Y’all happy now?

Great, now leave us the heck alone!

      EA

      Viva “La Resistance” !!!

And seriously FOX news? No one deserves that kind of uninformed journalism. Not even EA. Fox will proably try to say that EA’s games helped molested 20 children.

“There new study out of Blah that says EA games help mosest children all around the united states last year.”

    • 8 Saccia // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Regarding the news about an announcement next week, I really wonder what they are going to do. Obviously by now they’ve sold pre-orders for the Gold Edition of the game. So it doesn’t seem like they could make all of the weapons free on day 1 otherwise it would be a kick in the face to gamers who bought the Gold Edition. Then again, we don’t want them charging for that crud. So, how about this, maybe EA should keep those Gold Edition weapons locked up unless you bought the Gold Edition. Then in a few months, they release the Gold Edition weapons to everyone for free. I realize that it’s not what we’d like to have as the precedent for future games, but let’s be realistic that they can’t take out the only extras in the Gold Edition. Unless, they give all weapons out to everyone, and instead include something else in the box for Gold Edition gamers.

      Great point Saccia

    • 10 LJ // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Hey shouldn’t someone tell everyone else about this? I mean the G4tv.com Kotaku Ect. that EA has annoucement?

I mean at least that BF:MC has annoucement next week for the DLC plan right?

    • 11 Lono // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:22 pm

I’d be fine with that Saccia… but I’d have to wait a few months to buy it… :P

i am amazed how much momentum this boycott has built up, i guess all the emails to tips@everymajorgamesblog.com realy helped
i can honestley say this time last week i never thought we’s even get close to a post on IGN, great work guys, keep it up

    • 13 Saccia // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Yeah, a nod by IGN…… so does this mean Lono gets a reverse bell on the next podcast for all of his IGN trash talk?

    • 14 Doc // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:32 pm

WE didn’t do this, YOU GUYS did this. SG might be home base but this is an international effort, and it just might have an effect.

Maybe not. But things are looking up right now.

In other news, I believe our Recaptcha is possessed. I’ve been asked to confirm my comments with “Loving” and “Lucifer”

      @Lono

“Anyway, we’ve decided to add all the playable weapons to the $60 retail game. Y’all happy now? ”

But in return, we will be only giving you 2 playable map, and we will be selling single maps and map packs for the low price of 300 points per map and 1000 points per pack of 2…

    • 17 Lono // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:43 pm

@ Andyg8180: You know some EA bean counter just wrote that down in a memo to their boss… UGH!

    • 18 Sarge // Apr 9, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Great job guys on getting the boycott out there. Usually I dont get into the the hate for a particular company, but I have to get in with this. I understand charging for new maps or single player levels. It does take time and resources to make them. But weapons? What a crock. While I disagree on the gameplay balance issue. In Rainbow and Call of Duty you dont start with all the weapons and you frequently get matched against players that have them. Thats just how it is, not everyone plays the game when it first comes out, or 5 hours a day every day. So gameplay balance is a non issue for, what is an issue is that this is a total screw job by EA! Those greedy maggots. Next thing you know I’ll be paying for cleats in Madden. Or I’ll have to spend real money to get in game points to recruit players in NCAA Football. If gamers don’t take a stand now, we’ll be paying for extra bullets and grenades. Its bad enough companies charge $10 extra for crappy collectors editions. Way to go Sarcastic Gamer.

P.S. I hope this works, I really would like to buy this game without feeling dirty about it. : (

If this boycott gets a change from EA, I’ll be very happy.. for I supported the boycott from the beginning. When it was still an indy underground movement, before it sold out to the larger gaming news outlets. And I expect a cookie (choco chip, non of that oatmeal raisin crap!)

    • 21 Infn3on // Apr 9, 2008 at 3:20 pm

I foresee something along the lines of the guns being available to be earned in game, only at the higher ranks though. Gold Edition buyers will have them unlocked off the bat with the option to pay to have them unlocked, in line with some of EA’s other DLC

    • 22 XxAdyxX // Apr 9, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Really EA only has two options IMO:

1 - Release the game with all the weapons, which will never happen because then EA is admitting that an outside source had an effect on their game.

2 - Tell all the gamers that are on board for this boycott that they can go jump off a bridge and put out the game the way they were going to initially.

I think they are going to do something in the middle like Saccia suggested.

    • 23 Lono // Apr 9, 2008 at 3:21 pm

that’s fine with me too Infn3on.

    • 24 XxAdyxX // Apr 9, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Well, I have a Blogspot account and my Gmail is blowing up with comments to SVGL’s post. She is getting a lot of negative feedback.

To be honest, a couple of those anonymous posts kind of look like something Lono would say. :P

      Hey Sarcastic Gamers Community,

I just want to say good job to everyone here who took the effort into sending out these e-mails to everyone. With the inspiration of Doc, Lono, and Dave we were able to get the attention of IGN. If this EA announcement is about changing the DLC due to the boycott then we have accomplished a great community effort.

    • 27 kman571 // Apr 9, 2008 at 4:10 pm

      Things are looking up.

      @Saccia
Lono should have one minute uninterrupted air time of why he loves IGN

    • 28 Mizzl FashizzL // Apr 9, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I’m curious what they’re announcement is gonna be about. They don’t have many options open anymore and I think both the options Saccia and Infn3on have proposed are both reasonable. Either that or offer the folks that ordered the Gold Edition a coupon of some sort. To DLC for Rockband maybe…

God I hate living in Europe.

      No. Wait. I love it!

    • 29 Mizzl FashizzL // Apr 9, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Dang it! That should say ‘their’ of course…I do can type English

    • 30 Dakkster // Apr 9, 2008 at 6:11 pm

It’s official now. All guns are included without additional cost, but the five Gold Edition weapons are unlockable through going up in play rank for owners of the regular version. Great work, people!

      Dude… I know people don’t like EA.
However check out Criterion, Burnout Paradise. Owned by EA.
Yet it is offering MASSIVE GCC (Game Changing Content, they don’t like DLC) for FREE!

They reacently released Cagney with Two new cars, 4 new liviers, 70 more timed challenges and a bunch of updates!

If you want a good game with plenty of life due to GCC and its fun even without it check out Burnout Paradise!

I think if they do offer it free, they will add ad’s some how…
