Humpday Update: 4-09-08

April 8th, 2008 · 9 Comments

About the freshest episode of the podcast ever, this week’s show is giddiness wearing a coat made of dread. Too metaphorical? Probably.

We tried to talk through the insane price that gamers are being expected to pay for Rock Band in Europe. We couldn’t really arrive at any sort of conclusion other than bewilderment. Giving people a game 6 months late and charging them twice as much for it really doesn’t sound like a very good way to create fans.

We also touched on the most recent developments in the Bad Company boycott, that is rapidly outgrowing its origins here on Sarcastic Gamer (and we couldn’t be happier).

Finally, we got to celebrate some good news, the arrival of the totally kick ass map pack for CoD4, and why we think it’s a totally seperate animal from the offensive move that EA is making with BFBC.

Lono got his hands on a Dual Shock 3 controller and shared his initial thoughts on the device.

I don’t mind listening for an extra minute or two to listen to the predictions, by the way. Actually, that’s one of my favorite parts…

Just thought I’d mention that :)

Oh by the way, the distinction between the Call of Duty 4 DLC and the Bad Company DLC is that CoD4 shipped with about 15 maps in the package. These maps, especially creek, are all new content made to support the game, months after release. It wasn’t locked on the disc, and the game didn’t come with 4 maps initially.

CoD4 was a whole game, Bad Company isn’t.

Something I don’t understand about the whole Bad Company thing is that surely whatever EA gives you is the whole game.

I don’t want to get into any sort of post-modern argument about the intention of the author vs the interpretation of the reader. But surely as the “creator” they can dictate what constitutes the whole game.

I agree the whole game SHOULD be whatever is in the box (though I’m sure with most games certain content makes it onto the disc but not into the release build), but the point I’m making is that it’s the right of the creator to determine what the whole game is, so the argument that we’re being sold an incomplete game isn’t sound.

Unfortunately software is a rather unique medium so it’s hard to find an analogy. The best (and it’s not great) I can think of is that if you go to a concert to see a band then the whole concert is whatever they perform. If they don’t perform the second track on their third album, you can’t complain that it wasn’t the whole concert. The concert is an artistic endeavour (like Bad Company) and the band, as the artist (like DICE and EA), can therefore determine its contents.
