I’ve started and discarded discussions on this topic many, many times because I know how it would end up imploding into a system versus system flame war before the banner graphics finished loading on the first page. This is the stuff of flame wars. Well, the fine folks at GamePro (yes… that GamePro, and yes… I am being sarcastic with my use of the word “fine”) have gone and done the dirty work for me, which works out for the best, because now I’m not the one responsible for having made the list. They’ve posted an armchair analysis of the listed retail exclusives known to be coming to the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 in 2008/2009. Read that last sentence carefully. Note that we’re counting two years, designating “known” versus “announced” (think God of War or Twisted Metal on the PS3… both are “known” coming, but haven’t had “real” announcements made yet), we’re only counting platform-exclusives (sorry GTA IV and anything involving a guitar) and this only counts for items you can buy at a retail store.
Flame suit on.
Here’s a look at GamePro’s list of platform-exclusive titles known to be coming in 2008/2009
Xbox 360:
- Ninja Gaiden 2
- Left 4 Dead
- Too Human
- Gears of War 2 (SYSTEM SELLER)
- Fable 2 (SYSTEM SELLER)
- Halo Wars
- Splinter Cell Conviction
- Alan Wake
- Banjo Kazooie
- Halo Chronicles
PS3:
- Gran Turismo 5 (SYSTEM SELLER)
- Haze
- Metal Gear Solid 4 (SYSTEM SELLER)
- Metal Gear Online
- Singstar
- LittleBigPlanet
- Resistance 2 (SYSTEM SELLER)
- Killzone 2
- Motorstorm 2
- SOCOM Confrontation
- InFamous
- The Agency
- Final Fantasy XIII (SYSTEM SELLER)
- God of War III (SYSTEM SELLER)
- Tekken 6
- Twisted Metal
First things first… the PS3 list has 6 more titles listed than the 360 list. My 4th grade math lessons show me that we’re looking at 60% more exclusives known to be coming to the PS3 than the 360. GamePro’s already gone through the list and arbitrarily designated some titles to “SYSTEM SELLER” status. As in the total number of titles, the list favors the PS3 over the 360 in this category too (this time there are 150% more “SYSTEM SELLERS” for the PS3 than the 360.) Now you and I can (and probably will) sit here and debate what year each title’s coming out, what title(s) are missing from the list, or what title(s) do/don’t deserve “SYSTEM SELLER” status, but at the end of the day we’re STILL left with a better looking list for the PS3.

Your taste in gaming seems similar to mine. I have my eye on most of the same titles as you, except maybe Motorstorm. Just didn’t get the first, and in general not a fan of racing games.
Should be a good few years to be a gamer, no matter which system you like.

I’m stoked about the PS3 lineup. I’ve wanted to be a PS3 fan boy for so long and finally I’m justified in my love for the black foreman grill
3 SuperPayne // Apr 2, 2008 at 10:56 am
I have to say, a PS3 is sounding more and more like a thing I want to have.
I noticed you mentioned FF13 on the list, but not FF VS. 13…does that mean that Versus will be on the 360 as well?…
4 Applesauce McGee // Apr 2, 2008 at 10:59 am
Why leave out GTA IV for 360. With exclusive content only for the 360 camp, surely that will have to weigh in somewhere. While some of you may not think much of it… working a games store personally, I can honestly say that most people who have both consoles are pre-ordering the 360 version for that very reason.

Bad year for people that don’t play “M” games.
6 RaiseHavok // Apr 2, 2008 at 11:09 am
After Mario Kart, I will be spending all of my money on PS3 games. I really want more information on Sucker Punch’s InFamous. It was one of the three game that encouraged me to get a PS3. I am also very excited that Twisted Metal and God of War will continue on the PS3. Resistance 2 and Tekken 6 are sure buys as well, but I will probably “wait-and-see” with Motorstorm 2, LBP and Killzone 2. Plus, there is still Team ICO’s (of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus fame) next project. While I don’t own a 360, there seems to be no shortage of great games on that system as well. So, overall, a great year to be a gamer.

There’s some good stuff coming out for both consoles, but Gamepro did leave off Mass Effect 2, unless that’s going to both consoles?
8 darkwonders // Apr 2, 2008 at 11:20 am
Applesause.
1) the DLC isn’t going to be out until the end of 2008
2) There are going to be a bunch of other games to play by then, and unless GTA has a compelling online portion, I doubt it will be played by the masses at that point
3) MS paid 50 mil to get the content. How much are they going to charge YOU for it
4) Well I can’t think of a fourth point… so I’m leaving it at 3…

I own a Ps3 and 360. This article was poorly written when its obvious bias. Sorry this shouldve came out April 1st so it wouldn’t be taken seriously. Disproportionate exclusives doesnt mean one is better than the other, sorry kid.
10 Keith K // Apr 2, 2008 at 11:28 am
Mass Effect 2 is definitely coming to PC and in my opinion that strikes it off the exclusive list, regardless of whether or not it comes to PS3. Thats probably why there’s no mention of the new Bioshock project, though that may have a tentative 2010 date, I dont know.
11 refinedsugar // Apr 2, 2008 at 11:36 am
My oh my, how suddenly attitudes have changed. From piling on the PS3 on mass to embracing it now that the feeling is in vogue. Exclusive titles - whatever platform they release on - it’s going to be a good (two) year …
… and it sure is nice that Gamepro, an institute many will agree bathes in utter crappyness, that you loathe, did your dirty work for you. Now I know the world is ending.

“Note that we?re counting two years, designating ?known? versus ?announced? (think God of War or Twisted Metal on the PS3? both are ?known? coming, but haven?t had ?real? announcements made yet)”
“16. Twisted Metal”
seems they made a mistake, so that would be 15 for the ps3, but still, looks like the ps3 is finaly getting games! I didn’t spent 600 euro’s (euro’s rock! **** the dollar!) for nothing!
13 dubbabubba // Apr 2, 2008 at 11:43 am
This article is completely pointless. The list only has known titles, both systems can announce more games. The “system seller” tag is meaningless because some people are going to be excited for different games. I would buy a 360 for Too Human (because it will be that good) but i own one so im cool. I will eventually buy a PS3 probably for SOCOM (after they drop the price to something reasonable).
14 blah // Apr 2, 2008 at 11:56 am
There could be a thousand to one, as long as there are more games “I” want to play on whatever system then that’s the one with the “batter” list
15 Sean "Rothbart" Workman // Apr 2, 2008 at 11:58 am
@All: Remember, _I_ didn’t make the list, GamePro did.
@Applesauce McGee: Read the rules… no multiplatform, retail discs only. GTA IV doesn’t count, nor does DLC.
@Lono: Do we know Mass Effect 2 is coming in ‘09 or that it’s exclusive? I don’t think we know either. Pachter seems QUITE confident that it’ll make it to the PS3 eventually. Again, not my list.
Torreyjs: If the “sorry kid” comment was directed at “me”, then LOL! If not, then LOL!
Sure the article (from GamePro) was biased. Sure I’m biased. And Sure, a longer list of PS3 exclusives doesn’t mean it’s better than the 360 list… it just means there are more exclusives known/listed and frankly I’ve been hearing the “360 has more games” mantra for so long that my ears have bled, scabbed over, then bled again _through_ the scabs… I’m not too worried about one GamePro article painting the PS3’s 2008/2009 library in a better light than the 360s. Frankly I think it needs to happen to get EVERYONE to step it up a notch. “True” competition will hopefully drive the devs to _truly_ compete for my dollar.
@tynoes: I don’t even understand your post… are you trying to imply we don’t know Twisted Metal is coming to the PS3? The Twisted Metal Head On recently released for the PS2 had a video with a hidden message in it saying Twisted Metal was coming to the PS3. It’s on the actual game disc, so I took that as enough validation for GamePro including the game on the list. That said, it’s debatable whether it’ll make it in time for an ‘09 release though…
@All: it seems this post did exactly what I figured it would… made some PS3 owners happy, made some PS3 haters unhappy, made some multiplatform owners double-check their wallets for long-forgotten secret stashes of “emergency money” to spend on games…

“If Sony can deliver…”
That seems to be a phrase I hear alot. I heard it alot with Star Wars Galaxies (SOE), Everquest 2 (SOE), the Playstation 3….. and many many titles that have yet to be released for the PS3 that were said to be games that would crush the Xbox 360.
I’m glad Sony’s line-up is looking optimistic, but I have little faith in their ability to deliver. I hope they do, because I’m a little tired of the constant delays for the “system sellers”.
17 lol // Apr 2, 2008 at 12:28 pm
you forgot all points bulletin for the 360, singstar isn’t even a real game, socom is a downloadgame, and also multiplayer only, killzone is gonna play like crap even though the graphics are awesome, the agency is most likely a <75% game, and besides, MS just doesn’t announce their games years in advance
i bet there’s more coming in 2009 or even possibly 2008 already
18 LorD // Apr 2, 2008 at 12:36 pm
@Alymon
“but I have little faith in their ability to deliver.”
ROFL! Trolling fan-boys make the baby Jesus cry.
How’s PS1, PS2, PSP and Blu-Ray (to an extent) as far as proof of Sony delivering??
So far Sony has clearly won the past two generations of consoles (PS1 & PS2), and Microsoft has managed to only lose one.
19 LorD // Apr 2, 2008 at 12:38 pm
As far as the article, I think it has a point. There seem to be a LOT more exciting stuff coming out for PS3 than there is for 360. A lot of people I know are buying the ps3 this year, and one of my best friends bought a 360 instead of a ps3 a few weeks ago. And you can already hear the disappointment and regret in his words.
20 Tweep // Apr 2, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I have to disagree completely with Game Pro… I cannot fail to see how Kill Zone 2 (after the in game trailer) will not be a system seller.
That said, this is a list of 26 (mostly) quality titles, or over $1500 worth of games. Regardless of which system has the better lineup (and yeah Roth, it’s probably the PS3) I cannot afford even all of the system sellers in all likelihood (LONO, how did you AFFORD law school?!).
Still, it’s a great problem as a gamer to have and one that I will continue to look forward to experiencing.
21 whoelse // Apr 2, 2008 at 12:44 pm
I see LittleBigPlanet (for thos casual gamers), Killzone 2 (the biggest PS3 FPS) and Singstar as all system sellers for the PS3.

@lol
I’m sorry but some of us can’t afford a timemachine, so we dont know the gameplay factor for these games. Thanks for filling us in!
IMO, I think Sony has been delivering since launch, but in a very very slow pace. Which is quite annoying. They have been releasing games and constant updates to improve the console so i can’t complain there, but the timeframe hurts.
Also, people still asking for a price drop, you ARE aware if your bought a 360 at launch yu HAVE already paid the same price and a 20 gig at launch without accesories or games….right?
I know there was a $400 model + 2 years of XBL at $50…..and if there was a $500 model…which i dont this there was then you paid for a 60 gig already. So asking for a price drop is pointless. And dont expect one untill at LEAST holiday season, if not 2009

Halo chronicles? oh dear god please tell me your kidding! Two halo games in two years=bit much

Gears of War 2 (SYSTEM SELLER)

and

Those are the only 3 games that matter in my book

I’m glad to finally see a good list of upcoming titles for the PS3. I’ve had a PS3 and Xbox360 since each released here in New Zealnd, and up to now the PS3 has sat largely dormant. Will be nice to start turning it on more often.
27 Keith K // Apr 2, 2008 at 1:51 pm
You know Rothbart, we don’t have to push the PS3 so hard.. At the end of the month when the Xbox players are waiting in line for their GTA pre-orders with fingers crossed, we’ll be at just any old games retailer walking in to grab our copies from the uncrowded PS3 section.
(We’ll have our fingers crossed that the online works once we get it home.)
28 Torreyjs // Apr 2, 2008 at 1:55 pm
You shouldve submitted this article to N4G so it could be praised by the sad Ps3 owners on that site and get some traffic for SG.
Sometimes I am ashamed to own a Ps3 when stupid people speak for all of us Sony owners.
29 EvilWalks // Apr 2, 2008 at 1:58 pm
@Lord
Are you serious? A new Xbox360 owner is regretting his purchase? How so? I own both a PS3 and an Xbox360, and although personally I prefer xbox live to psn, and the xbox games to the ps3 ones, I can’t possibly imagine being disappointed and regretful if I was only able to have one of them. As obviously, each console has it’s own good points, and bad points, but at the end of the day both the consoles ROCK!
30 codespace // Apr 2, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Nothing in the PS3 lineup has grabbed me yet, except possibly FFXIII. And I can pretty comfortably live without that, since I’m getting Vs. anyhow.
Then again, during the reign of the PS2, I owned a Dreamcast and an XBOX. Perhaps I’m biased?
31 LJ // Apr 2, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Meh at all of it. I look forward to all games coming out but im not super stoked for anything like “OMFG!!!!” Everything looks good, but not life changing. Who knows I might be wrong.
32 Bluntis420 // Apr 2, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Now of the ps3 list, how many will actually come out? I can firmly say that gt is not coming out this year. Something will come up. As for the others, they do seem intriguing but over any of those games, I would want home to come out. 360 line ups are more geared to me so I’d have to say that 360 has a better line up. But that’s a personally opinion. ps3 is a great machine and I have one, but I dont use it. If the same game came out on both systems, I would most def get the 360 version. Only because I’m huge on online and I love the controller. psn unfortunaetly is way to unreliable and just not good enough., Even sony said that they were getting an incredible amount of people complaining about it.

@Bluntis420: Remember, the list is ‘08/’09… as for “really coming out”, that can be said about both lists… things get delayed, it has and will always happen.
Also, don’t get your hopes so pinned on Home as being some magic nirvana… if you can’t get excited about any of those PS3 games on that list, I can almost guarantee Home’s not going to make you play your PS3 any more than you already do…
Someone from IGN has already played/beaten MGS4 and described it as “freaking awesome”. That’s encouraging… http://ps3.ign.com/articles/863/863825p1.html

Second : GT5 and and RFOM2 is not a system seller but Twised Metal is(again my opinon)
Third: you polluted the article with your Bias for the ps3 line up
Fourth : the good games to good games are 3 for the 360 and 4 for the ps3

I see three titles that I know I’ll be getting a PS3 for, and that’s Gran Turismo 5, MGS4, and the Agency.
When I first heard about haze, I was excited for it. But now that I’ve seen the gameplay previews for the game, I could live without it.

@Darkwonders…
1) “the DLC isn’t going to be out until the end of 2008″
- Ok I am simply going to refer you to the title of this article here… ‘Battle of the 2008 and 2009 Exclusives’
2) “There are going to be a bunch of other games to play by then, and unless GTA has a compelling online portion, I doubt it will be played by the masses at that point”
- Once again… the article’s title states ‘Battle of the 2008 and 2009 Exclusives’.
3) “MS paid 50 mil to get the content. How much are they going to charge YOU for it”
- But you are happy for games like Halo Chronicles to be in the list yet no one has a clue to what it is, let alone how much it will be?
@ Sean “Rothbart” Workman …
@Applesauce McGee: Read the rules… no multiplatform, retail discs only. GTA IV doesn’t count, nor does DLC.
I’m sorry i just figured that for a game expecting to sell 5.8 million units in the first week should be included here if a majority of people buying on one console over the other based on EXCLUSIVE content. Exclusive content that was released in 2008/2009. Hrmm what was this articles title again… oh yeah “Battle of the 2008 and 2009 Exclusives”. Hell they can even put the obnoxious SYSTEM SELLER tag after the 360 version. because average customer John Smith will and has been pre-ordering the version that will give them the most content. Regardsless of price and release date for it. But if this makes your copy and paste list here messy then fine… ignore it. Why not just link to the comments section of the original Gamepro article then.

43 DevilishSix // Apr 2, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Wow what a PS3 biased article. At first I thought I was over at Gamepro or N4G. For a site that claims they know about games maybe you should have discussed the fact that Microsoft has not really announced many games lately. First they focused on the holiday lineup at E3 2007 and the only real announcements have been Ninja Gaiden 2 at TGS 2007 and Gears 2 and Left for Dead at GDC 2008.
Any informed gamer knows that unlike Sony, who will mention and teases games that are years out, Microsoft announces games usually in the year of release, I expect to see many annoucements at E3 this year.
Was APB listed for X360 side? Hmmmm maybe I will just stop listening to your craptastic podcast, since your clearly a bunch on PS3 fanboys.

Sorry, but Gamepro have already been tagged as PS3 fanboys and also neglected to include a megaton of 360 exlusive. Most notabley APB and Project Offset which both look to be system sellers. I did my additional quick 360 list and this is what they missed:
APB (System Seller)
Project Offset (Potential System Seller)
Champions Online
Age of Conan
Huxley
Dungeon Hero
Infinite Undiscovery
Tales of Vesperia
Warhound
Guilty Gears 2
Kingdom under fire 2
Mass Effect 2+3
Too Human 2+3
Bioshock 2 (If they can list Tekken 6, which will probably be multiplat, I can definitely list Bioshock)
Warhammer: Battle March
Dawn of Fantasy
Spectral Force
Yeah, so it’s not “just 10″.

47 ZeroOnyx // Apr 4, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Don’t kill the messenger, he’s merely tapping into another article. and stating he likes the PS3 is called HONESTY. I have just a PS3, yet can honestly point out killers apps for the 360.
Point? if you can’t see any great killer apps for the PS3 past/present/future, then you are not only blind but also dishonest, to yourself aswell as those you spread your fanboy propaganda to.
48 Seven // Apr 10, 2008 at 12:00 pm
List of games isnt to accurate really, in regards to 2008 the line ups are more about the same on both systems. If you include 2009 really is the only way to have PS3 out number the 360. Not to mention that Haze being listed has been a real joke. Check out the media for the game, it looks like its bombed before its even out. I have all 3 systems but right now the exclusives are not making me sway either way towards a purchase.
I do have a feeling of having to wait for “Home” to come to get the full feel of what the PS3 is like. Having a PSP interface on the PS3 was not to impressive to me.
49 StrifeHawkins // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:27 am
First things first
Tekken 6 is published by sony. it not multi-platform
FF13 and FF13 Versus are exclusive to PS3
Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4 is Multiplatform
and Tales of Vesperia,Infinite Undiscovery are Exclusive to Xbox 360.
Only FF13 and FF13 Versus are being made by the Main FF team. The Reason there is two FF 13’s is because square enix is not sure which direction to take its FF franchise. So they split FF13 into two games one for those who made Kingdom hearts and the other for a traditional FF.
Square treats all platforms fairly according to merit. They are never fanboys to one console. They choose PS3 for their main FF franchise because they like the sales HDD install and Blue Ray etc..
FF is media rich like Metal Gear Solid 4 and i think FF deserves to be on a platform that does not water it’s ambitions down.
