Nintendo is the unquestioned Lord of all things casual. Not a day passes between news reports featuring yet another brawl between soccer mom’s, or a pair of seniors having a lightsaber-ish duel with their canes. All of them fighting over Nintendo’s coveted Wii console. Some say that Nintendo has completely abandoned the hardcore market, relying almost entirely upon games like Mario, Zelda and Raving Rabbids.
Well today they have announced they finally created a new (which is code for “so old nobody remembers”) blockbuster to step in for the overworked Resident Evil 4.
Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future is coming to the Wii at the end of ‘08!
Find out all the details after the jump!
In true Nintendo fashion, Retro Studios, the developer who brought us Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, has reached into their 80’s video game vault rather than create something new. Unlike Metroid however, Captain Power is not going to be a T for Teen rated title. This game is a getting solid M for Mayhem.
Built upon the ingenious original game which had children aim highly sophisticated laser pointers (the XT-7 jet) at their television screens in order to engage in combat while watching their favorite Sci-Fi show (Captain Power pwns Battlestar in every way), the new Wii version will take advantage of the super cool Wii gun to bring gamers a revolutionary FPS in the same fashion.
Featuring the voices of all the original cast, yes even Tank, and incorporating all the great blue-screen effects of the late 80’s version, Captain Power is primed to become the COD4 of the Wii. Gamers will have their choice of playable characters, each with his/her own special weapons and abilities.
Play as Captain Jonathan Power and you get one kick ass ray gun which melts human opponents into a bloody pile of human stew. Play as Major Matthew ‘Hawk’ Masterson and you can take to the air, allowing for ultimate sniper a**hole gameplay. Play as Lieutenant Michael ‘Tank’ Ellis and you can convert into an APC with attached mini-gun as well as the ability to toss insults in what can only be described as the best Russian accent ever. Play as Sergeant Robert ‘Scout’ Baker and you get the ability to not only cloak, but also place target beacons on enemy soldiers for your allies to home in on (Scout never really does anything). Unfortunately Corporal Jennifer ‘Pilot’ Chase, will not be a playable character (she did even less than Scout in the original) and will instead be the narrator for this new adventure.
