In case you didn’t know, I got a PS3 over the weekend. Yay for me… Anyway, the first game I played was Warhawk, as there was no other game I anticipated playing more. It’s great fun and I know it’s an online game, but it seriously needs a tutorial.
I mean come on people…
Being thrusted into combat without the slightest idea how to fly, or drive the vehicles puts you at a severe disadvantage against even the most novice of players. I know you can read the manual, but that gets annoying when you are trying to fight the enemy. Who does that?
There are the little combat tips that pop up when you discover new weapons, but they are of little help and they cover up a quarter of the screen. It’s almost as annoying as trying to get the hang of an aircraft while some d-bag repeatedly blows you out of the sky while he barrel rolls by. Thanks jerk!
I’m not asking for a major tutorial, just a couple of training missions on the the use of the vehicles. Maybe 5 minutes of total time discussing the differences between regular flight and hovering mode, or how to lock on with missiles. Then maybe a little free play to let players get the hang of everything. Anything to keep me from going 0-10 in my first 5 matches.
Eventually I got the hang of it, but it was quite frustrating. I actually had to take a break from getting owned. How about a training stage in the next update?
For the noobs.

I feel your pain Fer…uh, Dave.
I pretty much hated Warhawk for the first five hours or so, then even when you finally get the hang of it, there are still things that you can miss entirely. Like being able to reload by reselecting the weapon on the D-pad.
Still, major fun after a while. Oh and please download the Omega Dawn expansion pack. It’s teh shizzle.

Just start a lan line match by your self for a few to get the hanbg of the map/game1
8 Pliskin // Mar 24, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Listen to MoPar… start a lan match by yourself (piece of cake) and fool around. OR, join a server with, like, 4 of 32 people. Usually the matches aren’t set to start until 8 people enter, so people fool around in the meantime. Enjoy…it’s addictive as hell…especially when your friends are on.

believe me it’s worth learning
just a few tips:
if you have pro flight mode on, TURN IT OFF NOW, it’s impossible to evade missiles when on pro flight, for some reason that was on as default on my copy
get the weapons pickups, they lead to easy kills
NEVER get in a plane as a passanger, unless you know the gu you are getting in with they will rarley pay attention for you cries of, “just drop me near the flag”
To evade missiles (a key to succesful air combat)
1. Don’t forget to use your chaff’s, if you have one, use it as soon as you get locked onto, it’s simple, right on the d-pad and l1
2. Combine boosting and airbraking, this really throws them off
3. Wiggle the right stick up rather than down
if you do it down you loop and spiral and evade the missile, only to come face to face with a far more dangerous threat, the ground.
Oh and quickly hopping in a turret if you notice lots of action going on around you alomst always leads to a few kills, but don’t sit in one for all of the match

Oh and choose your spawn point wisley
sorry for the double post

I just got Warhawk about two weeks ago so I feel your pain. Trust me when I say “avoid the online manual” at all costs, it will teach you what each button does….that’s it.
I found this in the EU Playstation forums; a flight guide by Warrior-101.
http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?t=208847&highlight=guide
It teaches you everything from what each missile is to missile evasion. Well worth a look, if you need to practice against another n00b, feel free to add me on PSN, I am Irish though so the time zone difference may be a bit much.

What i did for warhawk (and alot of other games without a tutorial) is just host a game and play solo, then just spend some time working out the basic controls and praticing some more advanced stuff after.

LOL @ the COD4 fan bitching about how hard a game is to get the hang of and getting pwned at the beginning.
Did I say LOL?!?! LOL!!!
Seriously though… start a “local” game and play around for a while…

Dont ever say the word tutorial again.
tutorials are the worst thing modern 3d games have ever created next to the escort mission and camrea controls.
No it does not need tutorial at all that is the last game that needs one.
In fact no game should have one at all I hate tutorials more than anything in games.
I am sure there is a tons more I can hate but tutorials right now are at number 1.
15 Cube // Mar 24, 2008 at 8:35 pm
seriously in my day i got no tutorial and we died 1 one hit and liked it.
in fact that was last night when i bought 2 contra 4 and we did it again.
people complain about wasting time on loading and a tutorial is a far bigger waste of time andjust about every game waste my time on the first level at start up with a damned tutorial, I hate it.
16 Cube // Mar 24, 2008 at 8:37 pm
and nobody reads the manuals either , thats why you cant find any used games with manuals, they throw them out the door or ignore them I never read the manuals.

rothbart, I know you basically gave up on CoD4 after going 1-10 on the beta…did you ever try the actual game?

I know that feeling! I was ready to switch off after 30 mins!! Got the hang of some gameplay, but what’s with the total silence? No-one ever speaks! Team based tactical warfare with silent comms! Gotta love it!

Yeah, just bring a friend over and start a local game, you’ll soon get the hang of it.
20 thesenderof8 // Mar 25, 2008 at 5:31 am
yea its just a learning curve man but i know what u mean. MAKE YOUR OWN GAME AND PLAY IN IT 4 A WHILE THATS HOW I LEARNED…. BRING A FRIEND
21 Digunderground // Mar 25, 2008 at 10:18 am
Just a thought, and I thought everyone was smart enough to figure this out… Start your own server and play till you get the hang of it, then make an open server so you too will get noobs playing on your server… then finally.. join a ranked server…
Warhawk doesnt need a training mission or single player. It needs players that can come up with this on their own… use your head and you will b fine.
when you are ready frag me a few times online-

When I got the game upon release last august, I spent about an hour in a one player local game just messing around on the island outpost level to get used to everything. By the time I got into the main game I got 3 kills before getting flattened by a rampaging jeep maniac. A tutorial would be nice, but the local game gives you plenty of opportunity to practice vehicle use.
