When I came to the decision to join the ranks of the Sony elite, it was a no brainer to aim for backwards compatibility (BC). I didn’t own a PS2, and there are several titles I want to play like the Ace Combat and MGS series. Unfortunately, finding a PS3 with BC, at the present time, is bit of a chore.
Lono did beat me in the race to get a PS3, but that’s what happens when you go to the store looking for the 80gb PS3 and end settling for the 40gb. I literally scoured the Internet in my quest and almost caved like Lono.
First I went to my “bread and butter” stores, Best Buy and Circuit City. I visited both websites figuring that one would have what I was looking for. No such luck. Amazon and Buy.com were also a bust.
Plan B involved Target and Wal-Mart.com, a little further down on the food chain, but they sell the stuff so there’s a chance they would have an 80gb ps3. Still nothing. I even went a little further down the line and looked to see if KMart had any. None had the model I was looking for.
I looked up a small chain of stores called Hastings and they were out of PS3’s all together. Next, I looked up Sears and received a glimmer of hope. Their site indicated that they were out of stock online, but a store about 10 minutes from my house might have one and listed a phone number.
I thought to myself, Bob Villa may have been right all along about Sears being cool. I called and asked for the electronics department, and was informed that it was a Sears Hardware store and that they didn’t sell PS3’s. I was a little pissed that my dreams were crushed by the fact that Sears.com somehow thought a hardware store would have PS3’s. Dumbasses!
In a desperate move, I did a search and came up with a couple of websites I had never heard of. The deals on them seemed too good to be true, so I passed and that is when I found the link to my salvation.
Sonystyle.com.
Sonystyle.com actually had the Motorstorm 80gb PS3 bundles in stock, so if you’re looking for one, now you know. I gave a sweet sigh of relief, knowing that not only was my goal realized, but I had already traded for MGS3: Snake Eater (thanks to mrbadguysan) on playswitch and it would have all been for nothing.
In the end, while it was a bit of a quest, it was ultimately worth it. Aw hell yeah, nothing like buying next gen console to play last gen hardware!

So Lono has a 40GB, you’re getting an 80GB w/software BC and I’ve got a 60GB w/hardware BC.
Doc’s got… Doc’s got… umm… yeah, Doc’s got Beautiful Katamari!

The main quest is finding a 60GB PS3, which has the best BC. I’m sorry but Sony is shooting themselves in the foot and hand by releasing the newer PS3’s with limited (80GB) or no (40GB) BC.

What the F are you blabbing about?
Stop this backwards compatibility garbage, it’s unnecessary.
Why bulk down the hardware of the PS3?
The ONLY good reason FOR BCPS3 is that you don’t need as much cables and room for both.
If this is your problem in life then you are a small minority, my friend.
Go buy a PS2, they’re a dollar for a pack of 3.

I got a 60gb with $100 off and a bunch of blue ray movies and sony junk free.
then i put a 500gb drive I have laying around in it.
And i dont even use the ps2 games on it I usea real PS2.
should have got one before they started stripping the things to almost nothing to save money when they started losing the war, much like nintendo and sega in 1997. Not like there is any ps3 games yet.

Fergie, did you already have a PS2? If so, why did you go to all that trouble when you have the old console?
Also CAPTCHA, 102,150,000 is NOT a word.

@Me - The backwards compatibility does not bog down the hardware. It’s an extra chip which is used to emulate the system and is turned off when not doing so. It could also be emulated entirely in software if Sony decided to do so.
It seems that Sony has removed this emulation chip in order to cut down the price of PS3 merchendise. The chip has a reported price of $27 according to http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/06/why-the-ps3s-lack-of-backwards-compatibility-is-upsetting/
Personally, I like backwards compatibility. I don’t own a PS2, and I’m not going to pay $130 for one either. The fact that my 60GB comes with the compatibility makes the PS3 sweeter, especially since Sony has been depending on extras to haul the system like Blue Ray and Computer Media Playback.

Correction: It looks like it’s not really a chip but entirely software related according to the poreviously linked article. I need to read more carefully.

I totally understand why Fregie looked for a unit that has BC. It’s because BC is great. I only want 1 box in my living room and 1 set of controllers.
Plus, you get rid of buying memory cards (use the HD to store games) plus it upscales all the PS2 games to HD rez. And you know PS2 games are still good. GOW2, Odin Sphere, etc.. plus my back catalog, all without extra clutter.
