My PS3 arrived at my house on a bright and sunny Saturday morning. I removed it from it’s box and set it up. Next, I turned it on and I was informed that there were some updates I needed.
Oh boy!
The initial batch of updates didn’t bother me too much. I knew that I had missed quite a few and had some catching up to do. So, after the 10 minute download I was ready to play Warhawk, but now it’s time to install. Then I waited a little longer. A little longer…
I popped in the game disc and it loaded… to a screen that let me know that there were more updates that I needed. Ok, no biggie, another five minute wait. This was then followed by another two minute install. Finally, we are ready to go. Yippee, Warhawk is fun after a 45 minute install!
Fast forward to Tuesday afternoon. I turned on the PS3 and it loaded Warhawk. Then a pop up informed me that update 2.20 had been released and I needed to get it. I clicked okay, and nothing happened. I then had to completely back out of the game and go to menu and tell it to get the update. Yet, another five to ten minutes of me… not playing.
I think my first question is: Why are the updates so f***ing epic? What could you possibly be fixing that should take so long to download and install? Yes, I read what it did, but none of it had anything to do with the game time it was interrupting. It was all Movie, Bluetooth, and music related.
It would help me out a lot if Sony could release little updates that take a few seconds to download so I can put my PS3 to the use I bought it for. PLAYING GAMES! Oh and why they’re at, make it so I can hit a button when the “it’s update time” window pops up so I don’t have to exit the game and browse for the command.
I know it’s free, but come on! I am not crapping on PSN, in fact I am trying to help them…help me. The easier, quicker, and more user friendly they make it, the less time I have to spend waiting to play.
In the end, that’s all I really want. Some time to play.

i hadn’t turned mine of for about 2 months (long story) and i had yo wait bout half an hour, and then the day after another update (2.2) came out
it is realy annoying
it’s acceptable if you keep yours up to date, but when you miss a few (or loads if youve brought a new one) then it just gets rediculous
P.S: these catchalphas make me think i need glasses

How many updates did you have to install? I realize you may have hit _right_ before the 2.20, so you had to update to 2.17 and then 2.20, but it’s not like you had to update your firmware more than twice… and yeah, the game needed updating if you didn’t have the 1.2 patch (to be honest, I don’t know how Warhawk handles it because I play it a lot and never had to update more than a single update at once).
It _would_ be nice if they allowed background downloading of firmware updates, but they intentionally don’t want people on PSN with multiple firmware versions, that’s why you can’t log into PSN when there’s an update.
Now that you’re up to date with your updates, this hopefully shouldn’t be an issue for you again.
This was a pretty significant update though even if it didn’t improve gaming at all. The one before it (2.17) was much closer to being useless if you ask me.

This why I like Xbox’s updates.
There is a new update, you can update now to play online or not update and play offline.
Click yes to download update.
Profile signed out, dowload update, profile signed back in in less than a minute.
Play game.

@Rothbart
Well I was more impatient with the 2.20 update than I was the initial one I downloaded. I had like 45 minutes to play and a chunk of it was taken away by the update.

I’ve noted a number of installs that take a bit of time with ps3 games… not to even mention the firm ware updates… all told, I’m still enjoying the console. Loving PJM. I love you PJM.

2 minutes is a long time since when?

And I rather install the game to the hard disk rather than sit through lame console sytle Disc streaming.
The hard disk is far more efficient way to play the game.
and I did noy buy the Ps3 to play games really I bought it to play media and hack so Bring on the updates that let me play Blue ray 2.0 disk and larger divix files.
In fact the ps3 having functions Like a PC is why I like the thing more than any other sony console to date. I got the thing running linux and then running a virtual windows XP/windows 98/dos box. that is worth it and it might get some more games, and since blue ray won i co uld careless if it plays games.
The ps2 with the linux kit was cool this is muuch better I do not have to solder anything on the motherbaord of the ps3 to make it do this stuff saves me time.
Sony consoles not that cool but I buy the things anyway even if they are cheeply made this one might not be that cheep.
I never cared for 99% of sonys games since the ps1 launch, but there is always a 3rd party exclusive I wanted to play with the ps3 there is less of them like 3.

I am sure I will have a blast with updates when I get a PS3. I plan on getting one later this year and by then the list of updates will probably be vast.

The same thing happened with my 360. I hadn’t been on Xbox Live for about 1/2 a year, and I connect, and every single game I used to play needed a new update which took a while. They all acculumated, and it was a good 2 hours worth of downloading before I had updated all my games. But I understand your angle. The PSN and all the games have continuous updates which they make too much of. You don’t actually need the updates for single player but it IS worth having to wait for updates to play online. The updates do a lot, but I reiterate: They are overhyped…

Quick! PJM > Animathias?

for the record… you dont have to update the firmware to play the single player games… i know this because i put off downloading v 1.7 for like a month because i was too busy playing enchanted arms and i didnt want to waste time…

Sorry to put it this way, but you sound like a spoiled little brat.
Either that, or learn how to manage your time a little better, so you don’t end up sitting in front of the TV and watching the progress bar.

There are a lot of updates, but would you rather play a broken game?

Firmware updates ftw. Here’s a snippet of my phone call to Sony support on Monday after my PS3 semi-died on the weekend.
me: “Hey my PS3 won’t load or accept any types of discs …”
them: “Okay go into the media bar, system settings, scroll right to the bottom. Okay now what version are you running?”
me: “2.1″.
them: “Oh you need 2.17. You’re going to have to update. This is going to take a little while so I’m going to give you a reference number so when you call back [...]”
few seconds later …
me: “So after I do this update - this will fix the problem? Discs will now load because of a firmware update?”
them: “Most times this does it, but a small amount of time, the disc drive has failed and the unit has to be replaced”.
So I hang up, wait out the update and naturally afterward it made no difference. I call them back and they start the paper trail on sending me a coffin.
So remember kiddies. Don’t jump to conclusions. Just because the drive won’t load any type of disc whatsoever doesn’t mean it’s broke. If discs loaded fine on Friday, but won’t load the next day - Saturday - this in no way means the drive is broken. You just need to update the firmware. Yes every sort of disc originally worked under the old firmware, but um, yeah, DL the new one.
Two days later, 2.20 is out. Yay.

The PS3 is sounding less apealing to me day by day. I may be spoiled by Xbox Live, but if your online service isn’t up to that level of excellent (yet, sometimes crappy) service, then I don’t want it. Having no control while downloading a simple system update is crazy to me. Even if it is free.
17 photomaster94 // Mar 26, 2008 at 9:14 pm
dave you will be glad to know update version 1.3 is coming out for warhawk
18 dwbronc // Mar 27, 2008 at 12:49 am
so you’ve really only gone through one update, because you had to have expected for there to be a firmware update as soon as you turned on your new ps3 and you had to have expected for warhawk to have a patch that you would need to update, so you’ve really only gone through one new update(unexpected), for the longest time we(ps3 owners) didn’t see any firmware updates because people complained to Sony about having to download updates every couple of weeks, so Sony answered those that complained with a simple “were going to have less updates and just stuff more into each of those updates”, sorry about that just had to get it off my chest, (STOP COMPLAINING, read a book while its updating :D)

Like the Xbox 360 has no updates (Dead Rising…). Plus you should’ve bought the PS3 from the beginning
That’s kind of a reward to the early adopters
You have to get something right by doing so, haven’t you?

I feel so out of place.. I actually love firmware updates on both my PS3 and my PSP. (The useful ones anyway.)
Anything that provides a change log, I’m all over it, salivating for new features. I couldnt give a damn about in-game XMB or in-game communication, but I love new video features, Remote Play features, playlist features, PlayStation Store updates.. etc.
I feel like they’re giving me free stuff for a minimum hassle.
Of course, I almost always update my PS3 via Remote Play while Im at work so its already done and ready to go by the time I actually get home to use it.

@RK1
You can do exact same on the PS3. If you dont want to download update you can wait and just play offline gaming. Then install the update at a suitable time for yourself

Lol if you think that’s bad Wii updates take like 20 minutes and you cant do ANYTHING! Not to mention often you have to update your system each time you get a new game so it can know how to play it…
