GTA IV On 360 Or PS3?

GTA IV, one of the most anticipated titles of the year, will be released in about a month and a half. At first I was like, “eh, another GTA,” but as Rockstar releases details, I find myself getting excited for the game. With a PS3 looming on my horizon, I find myself wondering whether or not I should pick it up for the PS3, or 360.

First of all, it’s a huge blow for the PS3 that both consoles are getting the game on the same day. In the past, Playstation has had up to a year before other consoles got their hands on it. So that’s why, if you have both consoles you have to make a choice. Even if you only have one console, you might prefer it on the other.

Here’s the big difference: Episodic content. Looks like this content will be coming out for the 360 in 2008. Isn’t DLC wonderful? It makes GTA and Mass Effect longer, and could add a ton of replay value. It’s looking like Take Two is going to make the initial DLC 360 exclusive, with more to come in 2009 for both consoles. Microsoft reportedly dropped $50 million to get this privilege, I’ve got to give this category to them.

Having the ability to play online multiplayer is a huge thing these days, it gives your game even more replayability if you can go online and play with your buddies. Both systems will have online play, no difference in that aspect. I can’t wait to be the victim of a drive by so I can yell out, “what’s happening to our hood?” I’ve got to say Sony has the edge in the category since PSN is free.

After purchasing a game, I like to go home, pop it in my console and play it. Like Devil May Cry 4, GTA IV on the PS3 may have a initial install time. If this is true, I’m giving this one to the 360 out of spite for making me wait.

I’d love to discuss graphics, but according to my source, all of the previews have been showcased on the 360. Even if that wasn’t the case, I would have to do some real digging to find out if full RGB was on the PS3 versions, to get a full comparison. On the other hand, I don’t even play on an HDTV… so sucks for me.

Well, for me it’s looking like the 360 version is the way to go. The DLC alone makes my choice simple. Let us know which version are you planning on picking up in the forums.

Choose!

as i don’t have a 360 the choice is pretty obvious for me
but i prefer sixaxis to 360 controllers, so i’d probably go ps3 anyway, and the dlc will eventualy come to ps3 or i will eat my comment

PS3, DLC doesnt make any big difference. why should i pay for more 2 missions (probably) 2 go and kill and steal some cars. savin’ money, enjoying the game, sharing it @ Home with friends.

360, episodic content and bigger online community which most (ok all) of my friends are on.

      @balaamsafe
Start chewing, the DLC is an Xbox exclusive and is not going to he PS3.

Lol at all the people saying “it’s only going to be a mission”, Peter Moore came on stage and said that each episode would be the length of a “stories game” lasting over 10 hours. I think thats worth our money, don’t you?

      360. DLC and GamerScore make my choice simple.

It’s amazing to me how quickly the situation has 180′ed. The GTA series had always been a staple, and a great argument for a Sony console, since their exclusivity agreement meant that’d be the only place to play a GTA title (at least for a while). Now, not only has Sony lost that edge, but Microsoft is now getting exclusive content that Sony won’t even get (at least for a while).

Did Microsoft steal Sony’s girlfriend, or was that break-up imminent already?

I have both systems and I gotta say 360. DLC and Acheievements, plus a solid online system. I don’t care if the graphics will be slightly better on the PS3 (no one knows yet), but graphics aren’t everything.

There’s rumor about DLC not being conclusive to Xbox, though, I would have to find the article and yes it was recent. So, we’ll see. In the end I will give this to PS3, because -if- it does in fact have a loading time at the beginning it will mean faster loading times and to be honest, that’s what matters to me most.

Since I don’t own a 360, I’m definitly picking this one up for the PS3. I also highly doubt the “episodic content” will equate to 10 hours+ of gameplay added on. And anyway, the GTA universe alone can eat up 100 hours of just free roaming mayhem.

Also, I can’t wait to see if Rockstar takes advantage of HOME and makes a special area for GTA in it. That could turn out to be pretty wicked if you ask me.

    • 12 Juncti // Mar 12, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Of course PS3 also has the added benefit of many happy gamers poppin caps while hundreds of 360 users scream “NOOOO!” to the heavens ala Darth Vader as their system RROD’s after a prolonged session.

lol like a free roam on the scale of grand theft auto needs any more replayability

Let me see… GTA games I’ve played (not religiously or seriously, but just played and enjoyed): GTA, GTA II, GTA London, GTA 3, GTA Vice City, GTA Liberty City Stories, GTA Vice City Stories… (I never really played San Andreas).

Now let me list the games I ever finished (ie. ran out of in-game content/objectives/missions):

GTA IV DLC means exactly squat to me. If GTA IV is the game it’s being promised as, I’ll run out of steam LONG before the game runs out of content. I’m not interested in online multiplayer either.

So that leaves me to the obvious choice of buying it on the PS3… the machine that Just Works™ for me (your milage may vary). Of course if it ends up there’s some fundamental flaw in the PS3 version over the 360 version, I won’t buy the PS3 version but based on the scant rumors I’ve heard, it should hit being pretty much equal between the two versions.

    • 15 Youlikeyams // Mar 12, 2008 at 3:55 pm

PS3 version for me - not got a 360, nor will DLC entice me to buy one.

(Also, CAPTCHA, 2,000 is not a word.)

    • 16 ummm, Yeah... // Mar 12, 2008 at 3:59 pm

      @Rothbart
I’m starting to see why your a PS3 fanboy more and more as you post. In this comment you say online multiplayer doesn’t really matter to you. This could explain why you’re willing to give the PS3 such lineancy on the subject. For everybody else, online play is a HUGE deal, which is why 360 has the edge. And I’m sorry, if WoW can get $15 a month and have over 6 million users, then $50 per YEAR shouldn’t be a problem. Just some thoughts…

    • 17 Alymon // Mar 12, 2008 at 4:05 pm

360 version for me. Both versions will be good, and I’m sure Rockstar is taking steps to insure that the PS3’s online play is just as good as the 360’s….. but I have to give it to Microsoft for securing exclusive rights to the intial DLC. If that DLC is top-notch (which Rockstar usually is good about) it’s going to have a big impact on the game and which system sells more.

    • 18 balaamsafe // Mar 12, 2008 at 4:07 pm

      @ RK1 FaMiCuS
I didn’t make that clear, i meant that the PS3 will get some form of DLC, i know that microsoft have paid for THEIR episodic content, but they havent brought exclusive rights to ALL of the DLC, only their episodes, once that is up then the ps3 will get some lovin

    • 19 Sifer24 // Mar 12, 2008 at 4:08 pm

360 why would i get it on a system where the game offers less then more common sense…..

So, yeah, I’m plugging your forums, but I think it has some highly enlightening information.

    • 21 ajnokia // Mar 12, 2008 at 4:53 pm

PS3…. yes 360 is getting exclusive DLC but its been said that PS3 will have some content too. This means PS3 and 360 will share the same content but 360 will get extra. Im not that bothered about 360 having more downloadable content.

    • 22 Slashlen // Mar 12, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Well, I’m not planning to get a PS3 until June, but unless there is some reason(other than DLC) that makes the 360 version better, I will probably wait and grab the PS3 version.

I’ve put a lot of hours into past GTA games, and it’s a real possibility that it could finish off my 360.

Plus, in general I have to consider, “Whenever I get the urge to play it, which console is more likely to be working at the time?” Even if GTA4 doesn’t kill it, something will.

    • 23 Clstirens // Mar 12, 2008 at 9:52 pm

@Rothbart: As far as DLC you have a great point, this doesn’t apply to everyone, but I agree.

But perhaps some awesome new vehicles and multiplayer option would suffice?

    • 24 ZayneAshe // Mar 13, 2008 at 3:05 am

First off, let me say that I only own a 360 at this point, though I do plan on getting the PS3 MGS4 Bundle, so this could sound a bit biased at this point on what version I’ll be getting.

Anyway, if I had both systems, I’d have to side with the 360 on this purchase. Not only because of the extra push by MS to get the DLC first, but also due to the fact that the 360 is still a pop in and play system while the PS3 is slowly turning into a PC-style pop in, install, then play system.

While this is all fine and good, as it makes load times virtually vanish, I’ve been spoiled for far too long of knowing that as soon as I get the game home that I can play it with the only wait being the initial load screen. So waiting an extra 15-30 minutes (whatever it will end up being) is a bit aggravating if the PS3 version of GTAIV ends up receiving the mandatory install, just like DMC4 and Hot Shots Golf. Sure, I can play my PSP, read Sarcastic Gamer or even run out and grab some grub while I wait, but still.

In the end, I think the game will still be amazing on either system, so regardless if people pick it up n the PS3 or the 360, they will be extremely pleased, but it defiantly wont stop people from making comparisons on which version ends up being better. I’ll only accept those if the differences are indeed substantial, because on average, they are so small and should be ignored and moved away from.

I only have a PS3.. so that will be my choice. Anyone with both consoles will probably go for Xbox. The option of DLC is better than not. Chances are you have a Live subscription if you have an Xbox anyway.

The game itself aside, I’ll be interested to see if there’s a MSRP difference between the two.

PS3, as it replaced my late 360 last summer. Played and finished all GTA games, always on Sony, which doesn’t mean much apart from the symbol. Once I really finish GTAIV, that’ll be 2009 already :p
If you’ve got a 360, don’t hesitate, though (to pick up a 360 copy :) to be very clear)

360 ofc. Better controller, DLC, achievements and voice chat with friends. Not a hard coice for me. :/

    • 29 Cube // Mar 14, 2008 at 7:15 am

If your not playing in HD it will not matter what 90% of the game looks like anyway on either one you would not be able to see it.

I don’t care about this game I’m buying another one on that day just because I can.

    • 30 Cube // Mar 14, 2008 at 7:25 am

I’m just going to say it.

And i have to say GTA, GTA II, was some of the worst games I ever played on PS1 or PC ever.

I think I might have even enjoyed that Demo disc of the fith element game more than those lame cash in games.

Then they went to 3d and was mildly “decent”

So ask this is any version worth $60? when you can just wait until you can find them in it’s full value of $6.99 in a used discount bin then add the DLC cost to that and you have the best way to play the game, as a cheep distraction when there is nothing else to play.

I got all of the last 3d ones on xbox for $1.99 at my supermarket video rental, my maxium spending price and I just got it to see the Cheesy 80’s mami vice jokes.

    • 31 Cube // Mar 14, 2008 at 7:38 am

Oh and last thing FULL RGB you must have HDMI and your TV has to support it.

It is almost exactly the same as the RBG settings on your PC monitors.

You get RGB values set to the silder bars
      0 to 255. rather than 16 to 235,

so all the red green and blur colors in your monitor appear darker.

this makes the color deeper and ritcher than analog componet video and have a higher range of colors. Contrast will be up showing more detail in blacks.

and none of that mattters as mush as what polygons and shaders the console is pushing out to the TV.
