Madden is the longest running NFL video game franchise.Originally, it was just plain awesome.  Over, the past few years, they’ve just leaned against their exclusive monopoly of the sport and spit in the eye of innovation. Until now.

They’re taking innovation and football games to the next level.

From now on, when you pay your $60, the team will come with, what EA has called “bargain players.” The low paid, low profile players that are only known to hardcore fans. The Elite Players, such as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will have to be purchased as DLC at 99 MS points, a piece.

John Patterson, Madden 2009’s Executive Producer made the following statement earlier today.

“We figured that the only way to get a more realistic NFL experience is to make the users pay for talent out of their own pockets. The Oakland Raiders shelled out millions for JaMarcus Russell, why shouldn’t Madden owners pay five dollars for him? We at EA are proud to be on the cutting edge of this new gaming innovation.”

He went on to say, off the record, that since EA was the only licensed NFL gaming franchise, buyers would have no choice but to “pay up.”

All told, if you purchased every downloadable player, we have calculated that it would cost about $258, not including the initial $60 cost of the game.  Hopefully, if you are a Madden fan, you only have one favorite team. If not, it’s going to be quite expensive to field a good team.

It might be better if you just gave EA access to you bank account so they can remove money whenever they feel like it. I know I’ll be giving them unfettered access to my bank account.  Will you?

EA, if it’s in the game, its in the game.  And you’ll pay through the nose to get it.
