NOTE: In order to spread the word on this effort, we would appreciate your Diggs. Thanks for helping out!
Yes, I’m playing the Battlefield: Bad Company beta. Why? ‘Cause it’s free. Will I buy the game? Probably not. Why? Because once again EA is fu*king consumers that spend 60 dollars on games by charging consumers even more money to buy additional in-game weapons through XBLM.
This is my big middle finger pointed right at EA. See what I plan on doing about it, after the jump!
Turns out that all of the hub bub about EA selling additional content including extra weapons as downloadable content is all true. Here’s EA’s response, straight from Kotaku:
“…Battlefield: Bad Company features numerous weapons in the core game. In addition to the core set of weapons, Battlefield: Bad Company will release five unique weapons free of charge through five different promotional programs prior to launch. EA will again make these weapons available to players free of charge after launch, in case anyone missed the pre-launch promotions.
At launch, EA will release a Gold Edition of Battlefield: Bad Company which will feature an additional five new weapons. For players who do not purchase the Gold Edition of the game, they can still buy the five weapons at a small individualized price per item. All weapons are balanced for gameplay. More weapons offer players more choices but do not create an advantage/disadvantage for players who do not opt to buy new items.
Currently, the menu in the Battlefield: Bad Company beta notes all ten weapons; the five available free of charge pre-launch as well as the additional five available in the Gold Edition.
We will have more details on the pre-launch campaign and Gold Edition of Battlefield: Bad Company in the next few weeks.”
I’ve played almost every iteration of Battlefield since Battlefield 1942. I love the series. I love DICE as a video game company, even though they’re now owned by EA. I just can’t take any more of this DLC crap. Not anymore.
When are people going to wake up and realize that if you stopped buying the crap, EA would stop selling it?
On the other hand, I can’t blame the fans of the games. These are really good games. Battlefield: Bad Company looks to be stellar as well. Why wouldn’t you want to spend just a bit more to enhance your experience? I don’t blame the fans of the game, I blame EA for exploiting them.
It’s ridiculous.
How, in good conscience, can EA take more money out of fan’s pockets, who have already spent 60 bucks on the game. EA has said that the game’s weapons are appropriately balanced and that the new guns won’t unbalance a game. If that’s the case, then why buy them? What value do they even have? I’m not buying what EA is selling and you shouldn’t either.
It’s time to boycott EA’s Battlefield: Bad Company.
I am asking Sarcastic Gamer and Gamercast Network faithful to band together to protest this despicable exploitation of the true fans of the series. If you want to send a message, post a message to EA in the comments below. If we get enough support, we’ll be sending a message to people at EA, that I know for a fact, read this site.

@Lono… Have you tried that decaf I sent ya?
I’m scared this game is going to rock and I’ll be unable to play it because of my commitment.
Seriously, I agree with you… I’m voting with my wallet.

Yeah. EA can suck it. While they’re at it, they can get their greasy hands off Take Two!

I’ll stand with you on this one… Screw you EA… thats bull… I mean, I thought Guitar Hero songs were ridiculous… but this goes up there with horse armour Guitar Hero, and Gears of War tutorials…
I was real excited about this game too… But screw that, i’ll spend my money on Meet the Robinsons before i buy into that…

Yeah…I was so bummed to read the confirmation. I love the Battlefield series. Hell…I even played Modern Combat WELL past it’s prime. I was really looking forward to this one…but if EA is going back to their old tricks…screw that. Sorry DICE. You guys rock…but your overload, EA, is pissing me off again. For a second there I was starting to think EA was getting their stuff together and trying to IMPROVE their image…then I read this.

Heh, i didn’t plan on buying it anyway, im not trying to sound like a hippie, but EA is a corporate fathead that exploits their developers down with EA!! Wake up, and smell the ashes!
6 SarcasticSparki // Mar 26, 2008 at 8:38 am
I always vote with my wallet. Unfortunately I live in Florida, so voting any other way results in my chad dangling… and my votes don’t count.
Anyway. I don’t think I’d buy a BF game for $60 anyway. They’re all basically multiplayer online only… and especially not for a console, due to a combo of how crappy I felt the BF2 console port was and the typical players on console games vs PC BF players… just different types of people, that IMO drastically change the way the game is played. And just a loaded question, are there going to be dedicated servers?
These extras charges for petty crap that should be included are just another downer.. but if the game was $40, I doubt I’d mind as much about them.
7 Poison Arrow // Mar 26, 2008 at 8:53 am
I doubt EA will care but sign me up :/

I love the battlefield games, but my anger at EA is shadowing my excitement for this game (that’s saying A LOT)
I think its time that EA realises that it’s the gamers they should be trying to satisfy, not their wallets (which are already more valuable than fort Knox). It’s no wonder why EA have more of a reputation than Darth Vader. EA is a bully; they believe that just because they are one of the biggest companies around they think that they can do what they want regardless of what we want, without any consequences.
Lono is right, we as the consumers make EA what it is. I am willing to put my love of battlefield aside and take a stand. If enough people do the same EA will have no choice but to listen, maby we’ll make them realise once and for all that its about the people (not likely though).
This is also why I whished Ea would never take over take-two, “oh look, GTA 15! You buy the disk and then pay 1000 points to play the game. What’s that, no cars or planes or pedestrians? That’s because they come in optional download packs for only 1200 points each!”
Sorry about the rant, I needed to vent some steam.
9 1Colin1 // Mar 26, 2008 at 8:59 am
Doesn’t really sound any different than any of the Need For Speeds that you can buy your way through the game. :\

I already have boycotted EA altogether and since i’m in uk the only game that I will sell out for is rock band, I was looking forward to this but after hearing about this a couple of months ago I though f*ck you EA you fat f*cking corporate **** sucking PIGS all this company thinks of is money they should look at their products before hand like Army of Two that game was sh*t (I played a friends one LOL)
I fully support you and I’ll ask the gameplay Network (The british gamercast network) To join in, its about time EA stopped pleasuring themselves by smelling money while performing other things that are just wrong
I F*CKING HATE YOU EA KISS MY HINEY HINEY HOLE
LOVE SARCASTIC GAMER THOUGH good luck all
12 IncredibleBulk92 // Mar 26, 2008 at 9:11 am
What really annoyed me is that these weapons are actually better than the weapons included in the game.
e.g. the shotguns you buy have clips instead of individually loaded shells. The sniper rifles are semi auto instead of single shot and have a lower recoil (I think that stat is called control or something) Also the m60 is by far the best LMG in the game, stat wise at least.
I wasn’t really interested in this game until I got the beta, then I decided to buy it. Having seen the weapon unlock screen tho its straight off my list and I’m telling my friend as much
13 slik1000 // Mar 26, 2008 at 9:18 am
I live in the UK, I have been on a boycott since the American release of Rock Band. I wont even buy that when it comes out, I was even more angered by the army of 2 ‘no cross Atlantic compatibility’ issue and now this. I will sign up on any dotted line until EA get their act together on the UK side and on the mini transactions bull.

but it’s now broken, because the downloadable weapons give a stupidly large advantage

18 shakey deal // Mar 26, 2008 at 10:08 am
Yep, this is bogus, through and through. Sign me up.
The really sad thing is, EA isn’t content to stop there. This is just the beginning. Now it’s becoming incredibly difficult to even find games that don’t have something to do with EA.
It’s crabs in a barrell stuff. When EA can’t produce the same or higher quality games than their rivals, they simply try to purchase their rivals’ ideas and/or companies.
All they need to do is find a number of spokespeople who have already sold their gaming souls. **** you, EA. You simply suck. Crawl back underneath the rock that spawned you and leave gaming to companies who care about their fans.

I’m just annoyed overall. Between Halo 3 and COD 4 charging $10 for 3-4 maps…especially when I bought the game day 1. I remember the days of the old xbox where some of the content was free or $5 at the most. $2 for a new gun…no way. Sounds alot like what Sega did with Chromehounds and what is also happening with Ace Combat. I’ve got to pay for a new multiplayer mode???

I have this game pre-ordered. I’m goin to cancel it this afternoon after learning about this little con-game EA has going. They are just trying to exploit the vast number of fans BF has. I was already boycotting EA over their treatment of PS3 and it’s gamers, but I was going to break that boycott for BFBC, but I’m not now, and I’m cancelling my pre-order today.
Now I just wish people would jump on my Boycott of Capcom over this Monster Hunter 3 getting cancelled as a PS3 exclusive, and made into a Wii exclusive. MH has always been a PS brand. I don’t mind my favorite game going cross-platform, but to take the franchise away from 100% of it’s current fan base is dishonorable, backstabbing, and unapprieciative to Sony for saving Capcom from going under years back. Not to mention a big slap in the face to al Monster Hunter fans which are Capcoms MOST loyal fans. BOYCOTT CAPCOM!!!! even if you aren’t a PS gamer, cuz everyone must see that MH not being on PS is just wrong on every level.

I am really torn on this one. On one hand I really want to support DICE as they have made some of my favourite games of all time.
On the other I can’t stand what EA is doing with this one. It is lame to the highest order. When will they learn that making people pay extra for content that is already made prior to the game shipping will make them go ballistic.
There are still 3 months or so until it comes out so hopefully they change their minds. But if they don’t change it then I probably won’t be buying it.
Stupid publishers when will they learn.

56 Pakorn1 // Mar 26, 2008 at 11:49 am
Am I the only one that thinks you guys are being completely insane here? It looks like what EA wanted to do was include these guns in the Gold Edition of the game (like the collector’s edition, from what I gather) which I assume will be $10 more than the regular price. We’ve all dealt with/purchased/not boycotted Collector’s Editions of multiplayer games that include extra content, right?
Why is this any different, then? EA is actually giving players the option to buy SOME of the collector’s edition content without having to go the full $10 for the Gold pack. I for one think that should be commended - unlike GH3 song packs, they’re not forcing you to get the whole pack if all you really wanted to buy was the M60.
So F this stupid “boycott,” in my opinion. 95% of you people are gonna buy this game anyway. I’m actually NOT interested in it, as large scale FPS (like Frontlines) totally blow on the consoles IMHO and I definitely don’t have a PC to run it.
But for you Lono, and everyone else supporting this crap I say stop it. You’ll basically be taking money out of the pockets of the hard working developers who crafted this game, working 18 hour days during crunch, and likely had next to no say in the decision to sell extra content. Come on guys. Buy the game if you wanna play it, don’t touch the DLC, and move on.
57 Baka // Mar 26, 2008 at 11:49 am
I am really hating the current direction taken with DLC, for random junk that should have been free. Expansions? Sure, thats cool, but charging individually for weapons and junk is pathetic. I wasn’t probably going to get it anyway, but now I certainly won’t give them my money for this.

This kind of attitude is ridiculous… i have no problem buying “collectors editions”… i even have the ninja gaiden sigma, call of duty, strangle hold and the devil may cry4 ones… but when i like the extra content… when the content is worth the money… extra movies(stranglehold and devil may cry 4have almost 2 hours worth of watchable extra content…) and stuff like that…

This is just ridiculousness and everyone knows it. What kind of FPS game developers, who truly care about its audience and its game would think this is a good idea? Almost every company EA buys gets ruined. We can’t allow this trend to continue. It would cause potential for game companies to take advantage of us consumers by advocating too much DLC. This is taking it too far. BOYCOTT THIS GAME

I definitely agree that DLC is getting out of hand, with the latest by BF:BC amongst the worst. I thoroughly enjoy the BF series as well and I will definitely pass on BF:BC b/c I just don’t think what they are doing with DLC is the right. $60 is a lot of money to pay for a game without nickel and diming.
Although there is no way to prove it I think that some companies in the gaming industry are purposely taking advantage of the dedication of gamers and not releasing a full game when they know people will pay more for the rest of the game through DLC.
There are a lot of great contributors that have made the gaming industry what it is today (Capcom, Konami, and Squaresoft/Square-Enix!!!!) and I hate to see the image of gaming as a whole tarnished by greed of the company over the support of the fan base that keeps the industry alive (ie. Guitar compatibility w/PS3 Rock Band and Guitar Hero, I’m not supporting GH anymore).

This is something that would set such a bad precedent if it was accepted. http://gamerdork.net supports this call to arms, brothers!!

It was the cost of xbox live and then DLC stuff (most of which is free for the PC, eg Red vs Blue) that put the nail in the coffin of my xbox fun.
I now have a very noisey dvd player, but a sweet PC.
EA….Noooooooo!

I hate EA for many reasons. This just adds to it. Never will I buy any of there games!

EA come on you already advertise in games and update the advertisements even in single player campaigns, like you sqeeze every bit of juice out of every game u publish and its sickening, what matters more consumers or money.
92 Xgamr // Mar 26, 2008 at 3:12 pm
I dont mind the five free weapons that will stay free. thats ok but… the rest is pure bullocks.
EA, i have hated you since you F*cked up football for me. 2K was a better developer then your pants-on head retarded team. i have stopped buying sports games from you (except NHL 08,thats different im a hockey fan it was good). the rest of your games have really blown (except Command and Conquer and Burnout). after hearing about this, i will CEASE purchasing any of your games from now on. i have loved the BF series b/c it was my 2nd(behind CS) online shooter. you will never see a dime from me for your games(except the games ive listed before) from me.
I hope you close down one day you F*cking Greedy bastards. so sign me up *directs all business to 2K*
93 LorD // Mar 26, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I will not be buying this game, nor any other Battlefield games in the future. Not only for the rip-off DLC, but also because they totally ripped off Valve’s Team Fortress in another Battlefield game.
94 YuN // Mar 26, 2008 at 3:55 pm
EA Sucks!
they’ve grown too big for their shoes, need to rip out money to the last pixel of the game!

96 You don't want to click this. // Mar 26, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Absolutely outrageous. This is pure garbage. EA must think we are stupid, though it is obvious that all the guns were designed, implemented into the game, and removed just to milk us for more money. I loved BF2 MC, and I was definitely going to buy this game. Not any more. My heart belongs to Splinter Cell Conviction now.
97 ZeroOnyx // Mar 26, 2008 at 4:51 pm

104 hawk979 usa // Mar 26, 2008 at 6:30 pm
This game has had my attention since the first tech demo video’s. As of right now I still plan on buying the game but as far as Dice’s idea of DLC, I’d have to say their heads are in an anatomically uncomfortable place. I owned battlefield modern combat and as far as the DLC in that game, I don’t think there was any..not even a map. Thats what really killed that game for me, and now to only offer the fans new guns…give me gameplay not gun skins. This is all a way to spit out the dollar signs, and believe me if you don’t sell games because of this it won’t matter what kind of DLC you have.

107 JJ // Mar 26, 2008 at 8:19 pm
This game offers nothing new anyway, only a tit would buy it, it’s just another rehashed EA title now, there’s a ton of games like this one on xbox. Why bother buying it, what u missing?? nothing. If u are a tit then and must have it, buy it second hand a month later. EA will feel the pinch when it flops in the charts.
EA games lose their value quicker than paris hilton lost her virginity so wait a few weeks and pick it up cheap second hand.

I will not be buying this game because in Dublin in Ireland (Where I live) all EA games cost 75 Euro each (Even Fifa Street 3!) and they want me to buy extra guns and extra maps and extra this and extra that.If I bought every extra thing I would properly end up spending close to a 100 Euro!

I agree you have a point that its unreasonable for them to charge for on disc content but dont complain about the price you pay for the game.
I am not buying this game as I also think its mad that EA think they can do this but I going to pay around $100 for my copy so I have the right to complain

130 Jon // Mar 27, 2008 at 11:23 am
This is about as bad as Microsoft making people pay for online. We already pay for the internet now your charging us to use it?!
Really, would it completely kill your multi-million dollar company if you just INCLUDED 5 more weapons into the game!? I was thinking about buying this but now EA has hit a new low. Expansion packs like those launched for battlefield 2 was fine but to pay for 5 weapons?!
lame.
131 Lono // Mar 27, 2008 at 11:28 am
Why hold back the guns? If they’re ready to go when the game ships and the guns are ready to be downloaded on day one, why charge for the stuff? Include it in the game…
They’re only holding back to make money, hence the boycott. Nuff said.

Couldn’t you just buy the game and not buy the DLC. Personally I refuse to pay for X-Box live when I can play the same games for free on my PC.
But the reason why EA are charging for DLC is because they see that Microsoft are charging people to play the games they bought already.
