Supreme Commander on the 360? The hell you say!

Consoles are the kingpins of gaming right now, no question about it. They dominate in every genre except MMO and RTS titles. Does that stop developers from trying to bring the last two bastions of the PC market over to console? Hell no!  RTS titles have been making shameful appearances here and there on the consoles lately, with less than stellar results. Case in point, the Xbox 360 version of Supreme Commander, which has to be one of the stupidest ideas ever. Even dumber than the new Knight Rider TV show. Yeah, I went there.

I’m gonna tell you all about this trainwreck and how it’s gimped for the 360, after the jump!

Supreme Commander, or SupCom, as I like to call it, is bar none, the most epic, large scale RTS title of its kind. With unit numbers reaching into the high hundreds, gigantic maps and a zoom setup that quite literally changed RTS tactics and control, Supreme Commander may not be the most popular RTS ever, but it’s most definitely a trend setter.

Back in November, news that Hellbent Games was developing an Xbox 360 version of the game published by Aspyr Media was announced, making every RTS gamer with even a lick of sense ask themselves “WTF?” Recently, word has come down that the release date for the 360 version of Supreme Commander has been pushed back to “later this spring or early summer.” When the game is tentatively scheduled to be released, the game will be almost a year and a half behind the PC version and will arrive on the console market where the RTS genre has yet to develop any sort of niche.

We already have another big name RTS on consoles, C&C3, which pulled in an 82 on MetaCritic. That is impressive, but anyone who played the PC version immediately recognizes that speed and tactics suffer on consoles. Even with the “all action, no strategy” focus of the new C&C games, there is only so much you can do with a gamepad. This is probably why nobody is crazy enough to even attempt to make RTS games cross-platform compatible. (Except Universe at War, good luck with that!)

Transferring a “relatively” simple game like C&C3 to console is one thing, converting one of the largest, most tactically detailed and deep RTS titles on the market, is a whole other can o’crazy. Something I have no doubt the crew over at Hellbent Games is painfully aware of.

“Yeah, yeah PMPB, you love SupCom, hate C&C3, cherish your PC and loathe consoles, we get it!”

If only it was that cut and dry. I do love SupCom and my PC, but anything that strengthens the SupCom franchise and spreads the love of RTS games to a huge segment of the market is definitely a good thing in my book. IF the differences between the two platforms are at least comparable. To date, they are not even close.

I agree with you completely! I actually played C&C on 360 and it was good but Sup Com will suck.

I love Sup Com on PC and that is were it belongs.

      I love C&C 3 and I agree with Hollowcow.

Not trying to start another flame war just a question.

But is the Ps3 developing any RTS games?
That I can think of they don’t have one.

“Consoles are the kingpins of gaming right now, no question about it”

Perhaps on the surface it may seem that way to you because of the games you play which . There are over 10 Million WOW nerds out there, more than there are Xbox live subscribers.

Also many xbox live subscribers, like me, don’t even play anymore after Halo 3 turned out to be rubbish. All them WOW players are active.

I agree with you about supreme commander though. It would only work if they descided to support a mouse, and in that case you’d have people demand to play halo with a mouse. That would open a whole can of worms and balancing issues and kind of defeat the point of a console.

pac man u should look at endwar its consol only its going to be the best stragey game this year and pc wont get it muhahahah

    • Cube says:

That will suck worse than playing call of duty 4 or orange box on a console.

Or any other shooter. hod unreal tournement 3 on ps3 was 4 times slower and looked worse than the PC even with a mouse and keyboard.

Do not want these console ports of good RTS was of my time and money.

I should say Xbox 360 at least the ps3 tries to have some PC functions sometimes when it would be needed.

I cant even get the xbox 360 or wii to let me use my usb keyboard to let me chat in game 85% of the time.

Speaking of mouse have you ever played UT3 with a mouse with somebody using a gamepad on PS3?

it’s a joke just like UT and quake 3 on dreamcast online if you had the dreamcast mouse.

You can run around them and they can not hit you and you choose when they die. they have no clue where you are you can see there in game head moving around slowly trying to track you then you can just aim for the head at close range with a sniper rifle and kill them in 1 hit.

WITh an RTS i can only think they will have nothing built by the time a PC user with amouse and keybaord will come in with a huge army and kill them.

So all gamepad users wil have to be banned to keep for making the game boring for PC users if cross play exist a PC user falling asleep waiting for the gamepad console user is the only way they can win.

I am afraid the Illuminate cannot abide by this heresy. Purge the defilers of Holy SupCom.

sup com on the xbox 360? other then the fact that it’s a compltely idoitical idea you almost want it to go crossplay so you can trash the annoying xbox fanboy down the road who has Halo 3 and you don’t…. drat you bungie!!!!

    • Cube says:

I got halo 3 and it’s not impressive at all.

looks and plays like a 4 year old PC shooter. the punk xbox 360 owner can keep it.

    • Cube says:

I should re state that. looks and plays like a4 year old PC shooter with a gamepad.

and the gamepad would be an “Axe” for chopping down a tree.

Where as the mouse is a chainsaw and the keybaord is a huge robotic loggin arm the mouse sits on.

playing HAlo 3 with the gamepad was ahorrible experance that is why I never play the thing that often.

HAlo 1 or halo 2 on the PC is far more enjoyable and you can play it online at least I can aim.

Fuel rod gun/flamethrower is old new to people who play PC halo how it should be played.
