I was checking the latest Episode of Xplay out yesterday and they detailed the top five best selling games out for the PS3. I was a bit shocked by the results.

Check out the top five list, after the jump!

Here they are:

5. Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed, some love it, some don’t. PS3 owners are still buying this up. I expected to see this one a bit higher, but kind of glad it’s not.

4. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

Tomb Raider meets Gears of War. Great game, deserves the attention it’s getting. I actually expected to see this one at the top…

3. Devil may Cry 4

dmc4_handson.jpg

Yeah, I’m surprised at this one too. This one’s on the list because of the pre-orders. Little did they know that they’d have to wait 20 minutes to upload this bad boy, just to save a couple of seconds between cut scenes…

2. Call of Duty 4

A Sarcastic Gamer favorite. I expected this to be at the top, as well. Turns out, this multiplatform juggernaut from Infinity Ward has sold more copies of its game than Halo Jesus.

Call of Duty 4 deserves all the attention it’s getting, but one game, surprisingly, is getting even more attention.

Can someone compare contrast (briefly) Warhawk’s online multi vs. COD4’s please?

Warhawk online: You can play vehicle based, ground troop based, or air combat. The levels vary in size from enormous to tiny little single base areas meaning the combat is usually quite hectic in multiple little areas but if you want less of a twitch shooter feel, you can stay back and use distance weapons such as homing rockets, sniper rifle, binoculars (airstrike), etc. It can really be played in many varying styles on any level. Warhawk allows 16v16 matches in: Zones, Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, and Dogfight (which is air combat only in either Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch modes). As you rank up, you unlock additional customizations for your Warhawk and character but gain no new abilities or weapons. The weapons are EXTREMELY well balanced in Warhawk. With the new Drop Ship, you can load 7 people in one ship, pick up a tank (holding 2 people) and cross great distances to unleash a “remote team” or to “carry the flag home”.

COD4: (for me) die, die, die, see a guy, get him in your site, die, die die.

Yeah, I realize that some people REALLY dig COD4’s pace, but for me I like _not_ having online combat not _constantly_ be a die-fest. As you level up, you get Perks which allow you to customize your weapons/abilities. I believe COD4 allows 8v8 matches and certain gametypes are unlocked as you reach certain levels (but admittedly I’m not a COD4 expert). I also don’t believe there are drivable vehicles but I could be wrong… I know they’re not available in every level at least).

@Lono: Warhawk is a friggin’ blast. I’ve got about 40 hours into ranked matches so far. That’s $1/hour!

I was on the fence about Warhawk, but I think I’ll but the hardcopy of it because you get a free headset right?

      How is that headset anyway.

    • 5 Lono // Feb 7, 2008 at 12:13 pm

@Rothbart: Warhawk is the one game that’s making me itch to save enough dough to pick up a Ps3…

      This is horribly wrong.

      1. DMC4 just launched and it is impossible for it to be the #3 best selling game on PS3.
      2. Resistance Fall of Man and MotorStorm have outsold all of these games by a pretty fair margin.

If you need proof just look up NDP, Mediacrate, and Fatmisu. You can see a really good estimate of this also at http://www.vgchartz.com

Now, I could be completely wrong and this could be only for last week sales or something. But, this is definitely not for the lifetime of the PS3.

    • 7 Rathanax // Feb 7, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Where on Earth did they get that data from?
It contradicts practically everything I have read from NPD, Mediacreate, Famitsu and GFK.
The best selling games are almost certainly Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm simply due to the length of time they have been out and the fact that they have been bundled in PAL regions.
There is no way DMC4 could possibly make it onto the list by pre-orders alone either and Warhawk simply hasn’t sold anywhere enough units to be the number one selling game no matter what sources you look at.

It’s the current best selling games, according to Amazon.com.

Don’t get your panties in a tizzy super chunck and Rathanax…

    • 9 Jolley // Feb 7, 2008 at 2:27 pm

i thought Resistance Fall of Man would have done better than Assassin’s Creed that game gets so repetitive

    • 10 balaamsafe // Feb 7, 2008 at 2:28 pm

I don’t see how resistance isn’t on there
but i guess it’s only amazon sales, but warhwak?
seeing an online only game at the top shows how the PSN is a force to be reckoned with

    • 11 Alecsander_C // Feb 7, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Where’s resistance and ratchet and clank?

    • 12 tanker9111 // Feb 7, 2008 at 6:51 pm

naw i can see Warhawk being number 1 just due to the fact that it comes with a free headset (i have 1 lol) so thats part of the reason, and as for CoD4 i can see it up there also due to theres no socom out yet for PS3 and i find resistance sucks hardcore online…. i.e shooting some pooor bastard with a barret 50 cal from the other end of the map and watching his brains fly all over..

    • 13 Cam-Dog // Feb 7, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Warhawk takes up most of the time I use playing my ps3 mostly because it doesnt get as repetitive
as say CoD:4 does to me. I also like how you dont have to rank up to get better wepons.

    • 17 tanker9111 // Feb 8, 2008 at 1:49 am

      Harcore*

    • 19 Cube // Feb 8, 2008 at 7:31 pm

I got warhawk I like it, it’s a battlefield 2 rip off with planes that are easy to fly.

In fact the aircraft take the show, I like to drive tanks in the other games but not warhawk all the other war machines are not as fun as the aircraft.

in battlefield games I avoid aircraft like poison warhawk It is almost the only thing i do.

being on the ground on foot in warhawk sucks of course since it’s trying to do mouse and keyboard aiming with a gamepad.

      I got a ps3 for ratchet and clank/warhawk/new daxter/metal gear/uncharted

warhawk head set is a microthing i never use i just keep it in my ear nobody ever talks.

motorstorm sucks balls and call of duty is better on PC and everything else not on PC is better on xbox 360.
