The key ingredient of any game hype machine are the trailers a studio releases. Sometimes we are wowed by them, sometimes disgusted. Sometimes the games live up to the hype the trailer delivered, sometimes the ONLY thing good about a title IS the trailer.
Take a look at two of the “worst trailers” of ‘08 after the jump!
We’ve talked about some great trailers of late for titles like DMC4 and Tiberium, and even though we try not to get our hopes up, those trailers have our thumbs just twitching for the day those games actually arrive. Not all trailers come across quite so well however. Check out these two trailers for upcoming titles. Think of them as “what not to do” when you release a trailer for your game. Pay specific attention to who you cast…you’ll see what I mean.
Conflict: Denied Ops – The gameplay looks “ok” but damn, where the hell did they find those two actors? Their about as convincing playing Mercs as a baby seal thats been clubbed over the head and put into a Rambo costume. And what is with that bomb? It looks like something from a 1970’s Star Trek episode.
SingStar - Rock Band and Guitar Hero without the actual gameplay or appeal. Talk about a blatant push to make you pay for songs to sing to. I mean seriously, people will pay for a Karaoke game that only has 30 included songs? Those two singing “cool dudes” killed a piece of my soul. The similarities to a GAP commercial didn’t help either.
It should tell you something that I actually laughed out loud when watching both of the above trailers. I never really understood using live action actors for a video game trailer. CG I can understand, especially if it is a cut scene from the game or something. Developers, please stop letting the “not-so-bright” kid of whoever be in charge of casting if you plan to use actors. Done well it looks bad ass, done badly…well, I think we all know what happens then.

My eyes and ears wont stop bleeding
Isn’t baby seal thats been clubbed over the head redundant?
the Conflict Denied Ops one was funny and made me think how wierd it is that they have actuall full langth movies like that.
and Singstar was horrible and im putting om music now to get it out of my head.
If you wanna rag on stupid commercials – go right ahead, but you’re willing to support musical games that feature plastic controller add-ons, but can’t get behind a mic based game?
Your logic is so f’ing fruity. ‘Waa waa waa Singstar, it sucks, only ships with 30 songs, I’d much rather pay 100+ plus dollars for Guitar Hero or Rock Band that ship with 30 and 40 tracks respectively. They are so gameplay and value enhanced!’
Give me a break.
^ ROFL
I was not “supporting” Guitar Hero/Rock Band, just stating a fact that you can sing to them too, and actually have something to do while you sing.
I think those two games are semi-fun, but I have yet to spend the cash. Too much money imo to get the guitar and more music track etc…
On the flip, where exactly is the gameplay or value in SingStar?
Not too mention, I was really bashing the trailer more than anything else.
You want me to defend SingStar to you? I dunno … is there possibly a more pointless task you could give me? lol
tricking people into watching this is just a little bit cruel. hahaha!
Singstar is fun because sometimes people just want to sing – not everyone can see the appeal of drumming or playing guitar in GH or Rock Band. It’s why karaoke is popular too – people just like to sing and have a laugh, without getting seriously into it with other instruments.
Youliketams is right lots of people enjoy Singstar especially female and younger gamers. A lot of them dont want guitar and drum rhythm games they just want to sing.
I will admit that I do own a couple of titles where the controller does nothing, but change menu’s. American Idol, Rockband and Dance Factory, but these can be kinda fun when my non gamer friends come over. There is usually alcohol involved
thanx for turning my brain into a puddle of pink marshmallowy stuff…
