The Witcher, one of last year’s best PC RPG’s may be coming to a console near you.
Read on for the lowdown…
Yesterday, one of the leading Polish gaming-related websites, Gram.pl, reported that Tomasz Jonarski, a CD Projekt RED employee, accidentally spilled the goods on a social web portal. In his “duty” profile field, he stated “Working on creating the technologies for The Witcher game on the next generation consoles: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.”
One of the main reasons The Witcher hasn’t achieved success all over the world is the restriction of the number of potential buyers. Releasing a PC-only game nowadays, when the next generation console systems are on their way to conquering the gaming market, just isn’t a good bet. Just ask Epic about Unreal III. CD Projekt RED must’ve noticed that and immediately began working on porting their game.
CD Projekt RED had denied rumours of a console version of their debut game, just a day before.
PR manager of CD Projekt RED, in an interview for the website mentioned earlier, gave an unclear answer on this topic.
“The information on a console version of The Witcher are greatly exaggerated. We are indeed looking for people experienced in working on the consoles, especially programmers – we have even announced this on our website. Also, we have different ideas to make the most of the consoles’ potential. (…) Summing up, we definitely think about creating games for consoles in the future, but as for now we have not corroborated anything yet.”
What does that actually mean? That we can expect a console version of The Witcher, but not as soon as you’d hope. CD Projekt RED doesn’t want to confirm the news just yet.
I’d say somewhere around the middle of 2009 would be the release date, but if I hear anything over the pond in Poland, I’ll surely inform you about any announcements from The Witcher’s developers.
I personally really look forward to playing The Witcher on my 360. The PC I have is much too weak to let me play the game. If they decide to include some additional content in the console version, it’d be another reason for PacManPolarBear to get a next-gen console.

One of last years best RPG’s? I guess that could be because there weren’t many RPG’s last year, but most people thought the Witcher was fairly average, if not poor.

@doesn’t matter: the producers are happy about the number of sold copies because that’s much more than a Polish game developer has ever achieved. Compared to the foreign ones, the results are quite poor, though.
@Kage: The Witcher has won many awards, including the ones from IGN and GameSpot, and got many favourable reviews. And even though, it wasn’t the most popular last year’s RPG…
