LucastArts made an announcement at GDC that should have Playstation 3 owners all excited! After Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is released, the Playstation 3 will be their lead development platform for multiplatform titles.
Read on and decide for yourself if this is a big deal, after the jump.
This announcement means that all their games will be written initially for the PS3’s architecture, then work will be done to port it to other platforms. The hope is that they can provide a better all-around game this way. We should celebrate or something, right? I mean LucasArts has released recent hits like Lego Star Wars Trilogy, Lego Star Wars II, and… Lego Star Wars… and… and… yeah, they’re working on Lego Batman too! Don’t forget Crapture Fracture… wait… what were we supposed to be excited about again?
Haden Blackman, the project lead for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed said in an interview with Tor Thorsen that:
“Multiplatform development was one of our biggest challenges” and “It took a very long time for us to reach a multiplatform mentality” commenting that with early builds, the PS3 version of the Xbox 360 led The Force Unleased “didn’t translate well”.
Apparently LucasArts thinks the solution is to perform the lead development on the PS3 and “translate” it back to the Xbox 360. We like to call that the Missy Elliot game development technique where you (and I quote) “put your thing down, flip it and reverse it,” but I digress.
Blackman went on to disclose:
“Our next project will use the PS3 as the baseline, and then apply that to the Xbox 360.”
While Star Wars: The Force Unleashed isn’t out yet, it doesn’t sound like the PS3 version will be the one to watch.
Kidding aside, I “get” what the announcement was related to and I’ve seen other studios say the same (or similar) things over the past few months (hell, Sony’s letting on like all developers are doing this… that’s questionable), but the LucasArts announcement just struck me as silly. I’d focus more on “making good games” than making the PS3 versions the best mediocre games they can be.

Isn’t the PS3 harder to program for?
And there’s still time for that director’s cut…They may need a quick cash grab like they got the last time they re-released it!

I would think using the full power of the PS3 is harder than using the full power of the 360, simply because of the amount of threading architecture you’d need to implement. However, arcade games would be just as easy as 1 or 2 threads would make no difference between systems.
I’ve been really dissapointed with multi-platform development. I always buy the games for 360 as the PS3 ones seem to be less polished.
Well, if they work on PS3 first, then it should be fun to see the comparison videos. Maybe those PS3 fanboys will finally stop shouting “the video is biased! They made 360 look better on purpose!”

The current trend of developing for the (more familiar) Xbox 360 first is like doing your 5th grade vocabulary list studying and then putting off your Calculus homework until 10 minutes before it’s due. You’re probably going to do a lot better if you spent 4 hours on Calculus and crammed the easy stuff at the end.
To be honest, the 360’s devkits are supposed to be very nice and the devs have a lot more experience with them. If they pony up and do the hard work first, getting the game how they want it, it’s much easier to take that and make it work on the 360. I don’t think this has ANYTHING to do with _literally_ porting PS3 code to the 360, but entirely EVERYTHING to do with devoting more time where it’s needed.
Where it will get interesting is the point where the devs get familiar enough with the PS3 hardware that they’re able to (and want to) push it farther than the Xbox 360 can keep up. Will they intentionally throttle back on the PS3, make concessions on the 360 to keep performance equal, or will we see the difference in games slide from one console to the other? That’s a great question (if I don’t say so myself).
This article was just a sucker punch at LucasArts because frankly, as cute as Lego Star Wars is, what in the hell have they done lately that’s been compelling? The smart money usually bets _against_ a Star Wars game… (the Lego Star Wars series being a notable exception).

I think that all depends on sales. Developers would have no reason to push the PS3 to its limits if the 360 still had a commanding installed base. Which would be a shame…

What they are saying in those statements is more likey the ps3 is our lead platform.
Because if the games we make work on ps3 they will work on anything!
Hey we got it working on the messy ps3 CPU and GPU that means we can throw it on anything else in less than half the time and it will like look decent!
I bet they are throwing a party now hey our game works on Ps3 now we started on xbox 360, wii and PC it was to easy to make that way if we do it on ps3 that will make us bad ass and we can show off at GDC 2009!

That makes sense in the way that PS3’s architecture is more “console” like (stronger CPU, a bit “old-style” way) while the 360’s is more “PC” like (stronger GPU, new trend at the end of “current” gen (ie PS2-Xbox) setting the path to “next” gen through more and more jaw-drop looking PC games). Given the PS3’s CPU “appears” to offer more possibilities for gaming than the mere GPU-CPU of the 360, why not? That might reduce release issues to have everything on schedule earlier and at the same time, and let’s dream, show us (or not) the would-be awesome power of Sony’s console (or is it GPU? :)), and let’s dream harder, better games for us gamers to play, and dreaming to the max, “good games”? Isn’t that what matters the know to us hungry ppl? That is of course provided more and more developers follow Lucasart’s way… Bets anyboy?

those games dont look as good on ps3 because they make it on the damn xbox and they port it over. thats why all the multiplatform games lok bad and the ps3 exclusive games look so ridiculously good.

microsoft should have never entered the video game industry. they suck at it. playstation still has all the best games at least but they need to stick to making software and let sony do their thing

Sony has been sucking as much as microsoft but only much longer 12 years.
They should have not got in the games with the ps1 back in 1995.
ps1’s was cheeply made had CD drive and overheating problems that caused skippy video and disc errors. then they kept that poor hardware and disc read errors going until they got sued with the ps2.
I mean really the only reason sonyeven got anywhere is because sega and nintendo screwed things up by making 2 other crappy 32-bit consoles(sautrn and n64 suck balls) and letting sony take it all by having the least offense console of that era.
So compared to sony they are doing a much better job only it;s now the other way around sony is now handing there lead over to microsoft and nintendo by making similar stupid mistakes fun fun.
So execpt for the factory defect on xbox 360 microsoft has made much better consoles and at least they give free repairs.
And when your PS2 broke down until they got sued they just said screw you buy a new ps1/ps2 we dont care how cheep we made them.
OH and the settlement for that sony lawsuit you got a free crappy game or $50 for your broken ps2.
Now my ps3 is collecting dust when I start to use it I expect it to suck and fail Sony controlers already suck they have always sucked.
at least my xbox has stuff to run and make it fail. what does ps3 have that other consoles don’t this time? like 4 games?
I never cared much for sonys games then still dont the only reason to buy one is to play 3rd party games and sony don’t have most of those anymore..
I think this video sums up what sony has for the top ten exclusive games at this time.
(and that is being nice i think most of those games suck I even have some of them oh what a waste of my money..)

Oh and the ps2 was a mess to program for like the ps3. The XBOX/gamecube was far more more easy to make games for and ports from dreamcast games sucked on it in 2001, until the tech wizard pulled a fuzzy rabbit out of the ps2’s butt and made some magic.
Of course they had too if they did not sony would eat there babies since they was selling the things on brand name and DVD player 2001 both that have not got them anywhere this time.
Just like nintendo tried the same thing with n64 oh we are nintendo we are on top! we can not lose..
At least on ps2 to xbox ports you did not “lose anything”.
If you can find a ps2 game that looked better than an xbox I would love to see it hell Ill buy both version right then and pick them apart side by side on 2 tvs, it will amaze me to see this technical wonder of programming.
The ps2 version was always the worst of the 3 consoles for last gen.

! more thing since I love to kill time and type uselss junk before bed to make me tired.
The only ps3 game that looks good is ratchet/heavenly sword and it looks like an xbox 360 game…..
And all console games look like 2 year old PC games.
