NetFlix announced today that they’re the latest “big player” to go Blu-ray exclusive. Every time someone announces Blu-ray exclusivity, people bat back “Yeah, I wonder how many millions of dollars they got paid for that?!” Who friggin’ cares? That’s “fair” in this game. It’s not like Dreamworks and Paramount didn’t accept $150M to go HD-DVD exclusive. Why are people vilifying any act that involved Blu-ray allegiance and treating the HD-DVD camp like the golden child? It makes me laugh at such a blatant double-standard.
What a lot of people seem to gloss over is that it doesn’t matter whether people are buying Playstation 3′s as game consoles, or Blu-ray players. Eventually… when they’re in homes, they’ll be used as both. A Blu-ray player sale today is an almost sure sign of some game sales later. A game console sale today will almost surely drive movie sales later. Personally I’m not buying Blu-ray movies yet because I don’t have an HDTV. Once I do, I’m sure I’ll buy a few movies.
It’s clear that some things need to continue to change such as HDTV adoption increasing, Blu-ray movie prices dropping, continued sales growth strengthening the already strong “Playstation” brand. The two markets are likely tied a lot closer than some want to think with the Playstation 3, Playstation Portable, local and remote media playback, etc. We’re still arguably in the “early adopter” stage of Blu-ray and the Playstation 3. Features will continue to accumulate, prices will continue to drop.
Will it take total and complete annihilation of HD-DVD for people to openly admit Sony made a smart move including Blu-ray in all Playstation 3s? I personally don’t see how anyone can say differently at this point, but some are still strongly invested in the notion that Sony somehow sold their proverbial soul to the devil (or are the devil themselves) to kill off the “noble” HD-DVD format. Those people are oblivious to the fact that from the get-go, Blu-ray had superior studio and hardware manufacturer support. The facts seem lost to them because all they see are HD-DVD players on the market that are cheaper than Blu-ray players… to them, that seems to trump everything.
I ask you then, when do we gamers as a whole, acknowledge Sony’s progress with the Playstation 3? The death march started some time ago for their competitor in the high-def movie format war. When do we stop treating Sony like they don’t even belong in the console war against the Xbox 360? What does it take for you to see them approaching, or *gasp* surpassing the Xbox 360 in your eyes? What do they have to do? When do they get credit for transforming what should have been a still-born flop by most accounts (looking at it in hindsight, it was not a very pretty thing to look at the pre-launch, launch, and post-launch of the Playstation 3) into a potential gaming and media powerhouse? The fact that they’re still around deserves some props in my book, but at what milestone do you personally say “Wow Sony. I have to admit. I’ve changed my mind about the Playstation 3… it DOES seem worthy” or at the very least not feel it’s still a failure?
