PMPB’s Review of the Reviews of The Club

February 20th, 2008 at 5:00 pm · 8 Comments

Developer Bizarre Creations’ The Club is one of those titles that really went all out with its media campaign. With multiple trailers, which I gotta admit did look pretty freaking awesome, a demo and multiple updates on every gaming site imaginable, Sega and Bizarre have really done everything they could to hype this title.

Find out if the game lives up to all the media pomp after the jump!

The title pulled in a 69 from MetaCritic on PC, a 72 on PS3 and its highest score, a 78, on the 360. Even those sites which gave it the highest scores come across as lukewarm endorsements at best. Lets hear what the reviewers had to say.

G4 TV gave the game a 90 out of 100 and said:

“The Club may not satisfy your daily dose of carnage, but what you will find is a challenging shooter that tries something new with a tired genre.”

Team Xbox, who likewise gave the game a 90 out of 100 said:

“It’s nice to see a shooter with a fresh premise, which changes up the strategy you’ll use to get your best results.”

Wow. A shooter that won’t satisfy my need for “carnage,” but WILL challenge me. I’m pretty sure those two both need to exist, in order to make a TPS worthwhile. It seems like the highest praise arises from the “originality” and “fresh premise” of the game and little else.

On the flip side, most of the reviewers were much more blunt about why this title is lacking in the “stones” department when it comes to tackling the other big shooter titles on the block. There’s even some contention about the merits of the multi-player aspect of the game.

I played the demo, it was quite fun actually. But I don’t think it would be the game I would rush out and buy…

Another gives a review without playing the game. I bought it at discounted £25 rather than the regular £50 and its a blast for a max 30 minutes at a time or so. Play when your drunk have the mates round try to beat each others scores. When your combo is ticking down and you are trying to find ways to keep it going is a lot of fun. Please guys are we not past this dont diss a game before you play. Go on i bet ya like it. I think its a good practice for when you play halo or cod.

    • ^ You realize this was a summation of reviews right? Not a review by myself. I did not diss the game, I merely stated what the majority of reviewers are saying.

Plus, your post speaks for itself. A blast for a max of 30 minutes at a time? Play when your drunk? I have even less interest now more than ever.

@PacManPolarBear: Yeah, but you said at the end, “I was tempted to purchase this game after watching all the great looking trailers these past few months, but now I think I’ll pass.”

Why not go try the demo? I know this game isn’t everyone’s cup o’ tea, but it just BLEEDS old-school awesome-ness. The Menu UI even feels like a coin-op machine. Seriously, you should go try it before giving it too much bad press.

    • ^ I trust the boys over at 1up and others enough to not want to play this game/demo over others right now. I have tons of demo’s and released titles I need to play that have gotten a much better response from the gaming community.

If I manage to get through all those other titles I might give it a whirl, but considering it didn’t even pass the 80 point mark, it seems unlikely to compare to the current competition out there.

I like The Club – downloaded the demo off of the PSN a while back and I think it’s a great brainless game for just scoring points and notching up kills, good ole’ fashioned style. It knows it’s not clever and it revels in it.

first it’s not a FPS its a third person shooter. I have it and I like the new premise of the game, but the multiplayer is lacking. Its not going to take the place of CoD4 or H3, but it is def. something to play when you are tired of the usual.
