Personally, I could give a damn about CG movies and a campaign, this is a title that rests firmly on the merits of actual gameplay. In my opinion, this game has one of the smartest AI designs ever. This AI will challenge you. The lack of a campaign is offset by the robust sandbox creation tools. While the game may not have beautiful CG movies, it DOES look breathtaking as you bring your huge fleets into combat. Best of all, this game runs like a dream on even the slouchiest of PC gaming rigs.
SoaSE is massive in the same way Supreme Commander was in comparison to the usual RTS fair. No lame rush tactics, no single unit spam with no forethought, or planning. This is a game that will eat up hours of your life like a candy bar at Fat Camp. Even the smallest map (1 star and a dozen planets) can take up to 2+ hours to finish. That said, once you get past the initial learning curve, you realize that despite the huge scope of the game, it still brings home the action (the AI in this game will lay the smack down on the unwary) and allows for maximum control via a brilliant UI.
I did not think any strategy game could pull me away from Galactic Civilizations: Twilight of the Arnor, but this game is the only title to see any real play time on my rig, since it was released. It could use an expansion to maybe add a campaign and some more robust diplomatic and espionage based gameplay, but it is, without question, a must for anyone who loves 4x strategy or RTS titles like Supreme Commander.
I feel bad for all those reviewers who wasted their time reviewing Turok when they could have been playing one of the best strategy titles in years.
