February 14, 2008 – For the fifteenth month in a row since they’ve been on the market at the same time, NPD is reporting the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 in the US for the month of January, 2008. Microsoft cited the 360’s remarkable reliability and their efficient distribution channel for helping to keep Xbox 360’s available for purchase in January. The “Playstation Brand” as a whole performed pretty dismally in the post-holiday period leaving little hope for resurgence until the ramp up to fall begins.

Analysts suggest part of the weakened PS3 sales may be due to the fact that Blu-ray is losing the high-def video format war to rival format HD-DVD. Word is circulating that one-time partner Toshiba has developed a plug-and-play compatible dual-format laser pickup that would allow the Playstation 3 to read discs from the more popular HD-DVD. The laser assembly would raise the cost of the Playstation 3 by approximately $200 but analysts feel it’s probably Sony’s only hope to stay viable at this point.

We’ll bring you more news on the NPD numbers when our analysis is complete (we’re still trying to figure out why the Wii numbers dropped so sharply).
