Of all the announcements at this years D.I.C.E. Summit, nothing, not even EA CEO John Riccitiello admitting he ”blew it,” compared to the elation I felt when Roger Hector of Namco Bandai talked about the upcoming Afro Samurai title. Based on Takashi Okazaki’s Japanese Manga and later turned into a television series by director Fuminori Kizaki and animation studio GONZO, Afro Samurai is definitely among my most eagerly awaited titles.
Check out all the latest details and the trailers after the jump!
Made famous State side by its late night run on Adult Swim, Afro Samurai is probably the bloodiest and coolest animated show to ever grace a North American TV screen. I mean honestly, how can you have Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of Afro, Ron Perlmen as the voice of Justice and the insane musical score of Wu-Tang’s RZA, backed up by the most brutal and bloody sword fighting imaginable, and not end up with a cult classic? I’ve never wanted to have an Afro and a Katana so badly!
Check out the game trailers here and here and the show trailer here.
In development by Namco Bandai, the Afro Samurai video game will bring all the “over the top” sex, blood, and hip-hop flavored sword fighting madness to the PS3 and Xbox 360 some time in the (we hope) near future. Last June a Namco Bandai spokesperson talked about how many games “use and abuse” the M-rating, and promised that Afro Samurai would be an M rated title totally in keeping with what die hard fans have come to expect from the uber violent franchise.
From what Mr. Hector has said and the trailers have shown, the game will be a third person action title similar to Ninja Gaiden and Prince of Persia, but with an obvious “Manga animated” feel to it. Expect to see severed heads flying, arms chopped off, scantily clad women and hip-hop music playing in the background as Afro slaughters his way to become the ‘Number One’ fighter in the world. Ninja Ninja, Afro’s alter ego, who will narrate the title and Kuma (teddy bear mask included) will also be present in the game. This title sounds so freaking awesome I’m throwing Rothbart inspired “don’t hype a game that’s still months away” doctrine out the window.
So far Namco Bandai seems to be taking this game seriously and are making every effort to bring everything fans loved about Afro into video game form. There’s even a film rumored to be on its way in the near future. If any game could pull me away from my PC RTS “safe zone” and force me to purchase a console, this is the game.
