Yes this is another Galactic Civilizations II post. I can’t help myself…
The new year is a time for people to make promises to themselves and others about what they want the future to be like. I think we all made a New Year’s resolution, or two we hope we’ll keep. Well today I was cruising the Stardock/GCII site (Yes AGAIN. So what?) and stumbled upon one of the greatest video game developer statements I have ever seen.
Check it out and be amazed, after the jump!
My hero, Frogboy, developer for GCII: Twilight of the Arnor (the guy building the AI woot!), posted his Ten New Years Resolutions For The Gaming Industry. To call it a breath of fresh air is an understatement.
Here’s his post:
- Stop with the obnoxious DRM. If people are going to pirate your game, they’re going to pirate it. Reward the people who buy your games. Make it more convenient to be a customer than to be a thief.
- Don’t release games until they’re finished. People will forgive you for moving a date back for quality, they don’t forgive you for rushing out an unfinished game.
- Don’t forget that not everyone has brand-new hardware. Make sure your games will work on the hardware that people have today.
- Fun trumps graphics. Nintendo is doing well because they remember that games are supposed to be fun. The latest blood spatter particle effect won’t beat out a fun game.
- Expansion packs should not be glorified patches. This is like #2. If your game does have bugs, fix them in an update, don’t charge for them in the form of an expansion pack.
- Help Jack Thompson find a real hobby.
- Please make a sequel to Planetscape: Torment.
- Make better user manuals.
- We don’t need every movie to have a game tie-in.
- Don’t make me be on-line to play your game if it’s a single player game.
Bravo sir, bravo. Frogboy, could you please send this to the guys over at Petroglyph and EA LA?
Thanks!

Stardock is the best!
If more devs were like them the world would be a happier place.
(I love GalCiv2 and am eagerly looking forward to ToA, btw)

Fantastic List.
I Lol’d at #7, that was a great game, much like a novel…
If only there were more developers like him in other companies games would be so much more awesome!
