The Turok Demo hit the North American XBLM today and I got a chance to play through the demo a couple of times. It’s not a pretty game, but it could turn out to be pretty good.
Maybe.
Find out what the hell I’m talking about, after the jump.
I never played any of the Turok games before. I have read a couple of Turok comic books, and let me tell you, this is not your momma’s Turok. I guess he’s still has his Native American heritage, with his Mohawk and “tanned” skin…? This Turok, this guy’s Turok in Spaaaaaace!
Anyway, the demo isn’t very clear as to what the hell you’re doing on a dino infested planet. You start off in a cave… somewhere, with some dude named Slade or some type of macho BS name, and it’s your job to, what else, get the hell out.
For the first ten minutes of the demo, you’re basically crawling around caves, fighting Dinosaurs, and it kinda sucks.
Once you get past that, you’ll find yourself in a semi-wide open jungle area, where you face off against human (?) bad guys. The game wants you to do it quietly, but honestly, after playing it through a couple of times, both killing silently and running and gunning, there’s really no reason, or advantage to killing quietly.
Therein lies the problem. They want you to be all Rambo on these guys, except, there’s no HUD, so you have no idea where the bad guys are. They tell you to rely on sound, but unless you have a phat 5.1 surround sound system, you ain’t gonna hear squat, except footsteps coming from…somewhere. I can’t tell you how many times I’d be stalking a baddie, then suddenly hear foot steps. I’d look around quickly, only to realize that the footsteps were my own! Real stealthy… I sound like I’m wearing clogs on a hardwood floor for chrissakes! How the hell do you sneak up on somebody with all that racket going on down there?

As for stealth, later in the game, its imperative, or you’ll fight about 100% more dinos.
Personally I am looking forward to the multiplayer aspect. Having neutral Dinosaurs running around the battlefield eating both teams… just sound fun. I’ll give this a try.

Yeah, that would be fun. You go to snipe your prey and a Pterodactyl swoops in, picks him up, and drops him from 200 feet.
I know there won’t be one in the game, but that’d be hilarious.

I’ve only played the first two games on the N64 (good times). I had a bad feeling about this one from the moment they started releasing videos and this article isn’t helping either. But still, I’ll give it a shot when I get home after work today.

I tryed playing this demo on a SD tv on my PS3, and the cave was ridiculous. Basically the screen was black with the occasional patches of light and the raptors always snuck up on me.
It was kind of interesting but thus far im not a fan.

Yeah, it looks like an average game, graphically. The multiplayer could be fun but let’s face who is gonna stop playin COD4 for this?

The demo was unimpressive. However, I did love shooting the raptors with flares.

The bow and arrow are for stealth purpos…. ahhh, never mind, this game sucks.

Dammit! I came home from work yesterday around 6, started downloading around 6:30 and at 10:30, it was only at 45%!
Now I gotta wait til I get home today to play it and probably like it. (I tend to like games that everyone else doesn’t)

maybe if you knew how to use the bow for stealth kills lono you’d understand why its there. I thought the graphics were above average. Should be a fun game (can’t be worse than that scripted respawning snoozefest COD4).

Wait, first The Club demo comes out on PSN in EUROPE three weeks before XBL and PSN in the U.S., and now Turok comes a FREAKING WEEK on the PSN in the U.S. before XBL in the U.S.!?!?!?!?
Whatever happened to the PSN getting game demos a month or so after XBL?
And what the hell is happening in Europe?

i can hear stuff just fine on xbox 360 and ps3 with this game. Looks fine to me not that bad of a game. I got no problems at all front back behind me I can hear them all just fine. have you had your hearing checked?
Turok games on n64 sucked balls this one is good godly compared to that the N64 with games like that ruined the last half of my childhood. in fact so do the saturn and playstation 1 but turok was the king of scaring people.
It was not even decent on PC then either but i could aim and the n64 it is impossible to do that so that is something right there i could kinda even jump.
You got turok demo before PSN if you subscribe to xbox 360 magazine you get the demo disc with demos early my magazine arrived about a week ahead before they put them up for download anywhere.
im still getting this new one on pc the console controls suck.
