The New X-Play Debuts…. With A Thud.

I’ll admit it, I’m a huge fan of X-play. I’ve been watching this show since it was on TechTV, way back when they taped the show in San Francisco. Way back when Morgan Webb was still nerdy and Adam Sessler was still extra nerdy.

Over time, X-Play has changed things up a bit. A new set piece, a new intro, a new announcer, etc. This past Monday, they decided to change it all.

Let’s just say that I wasn’t pleased with the outcome.

Check out why, after the jump.

First off, there wasn’t one review to be found. I understand that there’s a bit of a lull in gaming news right now, but the Bourne Supremacy Demo is the best X-Play has to offer? It really felt like Attack of the Show 1.5 and not X-Play. Let AOTS deal with that demo crap. I wants me some reviews. That’s why I watch the show in the first place.

Secondly, the interview with the Microsoft Executive. It was just bad. Really bad. Could it get anymore scripted. I mean really. That looked more rehearsed than the Apollo Moon Landing. (That’s a joke people, save your conspiracy hate mail) It was more forced than a Paris Hilton Charity Fundraiser. There’s no other way to describe it. Save the interview crap for AOTS. I wants me some reviews.

Third, please don’t make Adam Sessler read news anymore. He looks more stiff than Olivia Munn attempting to crack a “gamer” joke. Sessler has always been way better in his “off the cuff” style of delivery. Making him stand there and read news was a really bad and generally uncomfortable idea. For everyone.

Finally, please don’t get me started on the Mass Effect, Office spoof. I usually enjoy their brand of humor. Whether it’s drunk Link or Zombies at work, I usually find their stuff to be funny. You’d think that combining the Office with Mass Effect would be comedy gold. Think again. When your punchline is a tired “Dick in a Box” joke, it’s time to find new writers that aren’t aping everything else on TV, or the internet for that matter.

My only atta boy? Incorporating a “Cheat” segment into the broadcast. It actually felt natural and I liked the segment. Maybe it was because it was about Call of Duty 4… I dunno.

Is this really going to be what their show is about now? Industry interviews and Cheat tips? Didn’t they already have a show like that? Wasn’t it called Electric Playground? Didn’t that show get cancelled?

Stick with what got you there X-Play. I wants me some reviews.

It’s really gonna hit the fan on the next Sarcastic Gamer Podcast. X-Play news, gaming reviews without the stupid banter. Check it out here and thanks for checking this article out.

Couldn’t have agreed with you more sir. I really hate Morgan because she knows nothing and couldn’t come up with a thought of her own unless the prompter was running. Not to mention that she’s a huge (insert very dirty C word here) in person. Where have all the Sessler’s gone?

Much like Jay Leno’s monologues, I can shake the feeling that every word out of Morgan and Adam’s mouths are scripted by a team of _morons_, I mean comedian-wannabes.

They put the “ake” in “fake.”

@ Rothbart: I thought you were going to say they put the “ake” in Shake and Bake. Then I was going to be confused. But now I’m not confused. See, it all makes sense.

I always liked AOTS better then X-play. X-play had better jokes at times, but if they had a couple bad games during the show the whole half hour was done for me.

X-play had some good reviews and previews but they should review a game then give cheats for it. Then a preview, then another review.

Morgan Webb is doing her own daily 5-minute podcast now called WebbAlert. Its not always video game related but it gets the tech news out. I think its pretty popular on iTunes.

Aww I missed it! Dang thing came on 3 hours early cuz i’m on the west coast…

I totally agree! Especially w/ the AOTS 1.5 comment. That’s exactly what this feels like. It was better before, for all the things you mentioned above… although I do like Morgan Webb for some reason…

There goes the only thing I watch on G4. Shame too, I always liked Adam. Especially when he owned Jack Thompson on live TV.

This is sad. G4 was/is the death of everything that was Good in Techtv.

Seriously guys, you wonder why we hate you? Street fury? the Jamie Kennedy Experience??????WTF?? You killed your own BRILLIANT Judgement Day, and now you put the final nail in X-play’s coffin (the show has been going down hill for a while. Where are the ****ing interns?)

    • 11 clstirens // Jan 15, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Added note, I hope Adam’s contract comes up and he declines. I would love to see him in something that he can be passionate about again. You can kinda see it in his eyes… (very sad actually)

I just caught the re-run, and i must say that X-Play’s credibility seems to be receding faster than Sessler’s hairline….. Ba-Zinggg!!!

    • 13 clstirens // Jan 16, 2008 at 1:11 am

It isn’t just their credibility man… The creativity and GAMERNESS (made-up, but meaningful) is dead.

    • 14 Lono // Jan 16, 2008 at 8:53 am

Lets keep the low blows out of this P Diz

    • 15 Rae // Jan 16, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Maybe G4 will see all the negative responses and change it…hopefully

    • 16 Jehu // Jan 16, 2008 at 2:32 pm

I stop watching when G4 took over…much better when it was TechTV. Now it just a pile of crap, all the good people are gone form TechTV.

I hate g4 it was much better as tech tv when it was more raw and more fun to watch. the screensavers change to Attack of the show is horrible i do not watch.

That attack of the show chick costar I hate her so much and she is not hot like morgan either.
