That’s ONE way to sell PS3 Controllers

January 1st, 2008 at 11:12 pm · 47 Comments

The other night, Lono and I had to make a late night run to Walmart to get some medicine for his daughter, and while he was searching for the right medicinal concoction, this caught my eye.

Can you guess what it is you are looking at? Here’s a closer shot of the hilarity, after the jump.

Obviously Microsoft is paying big money for these endcap displays, and I can’t help but feel they might have a problem with this. Alex and I have decided that at least one misguided parent or relative, is going to see the Xbox logo, and pick up a controller for the wrong system.

Given the sales numbers for the PS3, I can’t guess I blame Walmart for doing ANYTHING to unload all of those extra Sixaxis Controllers.

haha…this is too good to be true…hahaha. somehow i can sense a walmart rant coming on…hahaha….i am sure microsoft sent it that way…LOL, ha tricked you.

    • Eric says:

They sent it that way so that PS3 doesn’t die completely, and Microsoft isn’t considered a monopoly that way, lol.

    • Pablos102030 says:

They do this at my Costco all the time.

“It would be like asking a homeless person for their opinion on adjustable rate mortgages.”

That is one of the greatest analogies I have ever heard…

      please check

      vgchratz.com

you will clearly see the PS3 sales compared to the 360’s ones.

    • clstirens says:

I love walmart. They have such “high Standards” when it comes to employees.

    • clstirens says:

      Let me restate that!

I know some good people who work at walmart. It is just their hiring standards are so low.

    • commander121 says:

wow you know there getting desperate when they try to sell there stock under there competeters name

    • commander121 says:

That picture just made my day. I wish I had seen it in real life.

Isn’t it wonderful how well informed and knowledgeable Wal-Mart employees are?

    • thomas logic says:

Beauty. PS3 dominates 360 corner displays! Score 1 for Sony!

    • Serran says:

Cant you Thomas logic understand that the controllers are there just to sell better cuz’ teh xbox 360 is a better product ? Score 1 for M$ ;)

    • Artemis says:

PS3 dominates!?? Those are sixaxis is a 360 box!

Microsoft is trying to help sony but putting a 360 logo on it!

    • Kanbei says:

now I need a new controller

      Walmart here I come!

    • M says:

Look at the boxes to the left in the first picture. This is obviously during restocking time (after store hours). Stupid…

    • Austin says:

Those that aren’t familiar with the industry may think MS pays for those displays. Honestly, those displays are paid for by distributors. These are middle men who supply the displays to move product they purchase from MS themselves.

In addition, as one person pointed out, this is a joke by an employee as the image was taken during restocking hours.

    • cg1991 says:

      Blasphemy to the 360 lol

    • Gavinius says:

Yeah you could be right about it being the joke of an employee, but thats a really horrible thing to do, that\\\’s a copywrite infraction, and this looks like exactly the sort of thing Microsoft would pounce on with a lawsuit. Dumb thing for an employee to do because no doubt he\\\’ll be fired for this. Also there is absolutely no way the display \\

    • Spy says:

Hey M…aren’t most walmarts 24/7?? how can it be AFTER store hours?

    • Doc says:

      @ Austin

Not a joke. I took the image myself. It was about 2 am when we went to Wally World, because Lono’s kiddo needed some medicine, and so I drove him to the store to get it. (He and Alex were visiting this weekend). The employee who we pointed it out to acted like we were from Mars.

We are, but still. 100% authentic photo.

    • Nobody says:

Hey, this story was on kotaku who got it off of digital battle, who has the EXACT SAME PICTURE as the one here.
And they didn’t say “From sarcasticgamer.com” or anything.
      Just so you know.

    • Taryth says:

I work at Walmart and they do treat me very good as a cashier, but I\\\’ve seen CSMs that hate their jobs there.

As for their customer service HAHAHA what a JOKE! They suck with customers at my Walmart.

My Walmart\\\’s a 24 hour store and our electronics employees , some are ok but most are stupid as hell.

    • Taryth says:

Oh and by the way I found this image hilarious LMAO 1 point for Microsoft XD

If this was planned by Sony it’s yet another one of their pathetic lies *hides from the fanboys I see running for the attack* 0__0

    • andyg8180 says:

I’m guessing the price was supposed to be 42.99?

This is not a prank by WalMart employees, this is Microsoft letting people know they dont need to buy a new controller for the MGS launch :-O

    • DeejayTai says:

Question. If these PS3 controllers are in the xbox stand, where the hell are the xbox controllers?

    • Jsaint says:

Bahh, no surprise here, but gotta tell you I worked in a walmart and they didn’t value anyone who had any skills in customer support. If you had more knowlage than a supervisor about ANY subject expect to be singled out and removed. They like them stupid or at least spineless at walmart.

    • dfsf says:

To whoever said it was “during restocking hours” most Wal Marts are 24hr. I consistently see boxes being restocked WHILE I shop at the three stores we have around here. Boxes just mean it’s restocking time, not that the store is closed.

    • Dave Myers says:

Wow, they were doing this at my Wal-mart in North Carolina yesterday when I went shopping. I just assumed they were out of room. Some of these PS3 controllers were in the Wii accessories end caps too.

    • carlos says:

PS3 taking over. I dont think they are trying to get rtid of these. Of cousre they want to sell them but i haven’t seen sony put any of these tands anywhere here in phoenix. these things are suppose to sell for themselves and they probably will in a few months.

    • PS3HasGoodExclusives says:

lol @ anyone who thinks the 360 is actually a decent system. Have fun playing generic FPS garbage for the next 4 years.

    • *laughs at all the 360 and PS3 defenders bite each others dicks off*

    • Tyler says:

I still can’t believe controllers are $50 dollars now.

    • mel says:

explain why this is in the produce section???

    • Guy Leaving says:

      Lame f_ucking watermark…jesus christ.

    • Doc says:

Those are greeting cards, not lettuce.

    • Former Wally-world Slave says:

Even the Wal-marts that close begin stocking about two to three hours before customers are ushered out in the evening and they don’t finish until two to three hours after the doors open for customers to stampede in.

    • Rob says:

I imagine that there are, actually, quite a few (now) homeless people with opinions on ARMs…

    • Alecsander_C says:

      AWESOME

      Sony is THAT cheap too???

    • T-Wich-E says:

      OOOOOOOHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! that is lllloooowwww

    • Tanker9111 says:

yea, i work at a wal-mart where i live as a assistant manager, i fired someone about a week ago that tried todo just this because we got a warning from microsoft because he did this. im personally am a sony fan and i dont want this to sound like im bitching at 360 but heres how our store setup is for games.

1 case PS3, 1 case wii, and 2 cases for 360. BUT PS3 and Wii are always sold out, we get in around 40 systems in a week (PS3 / Wii) we get in maybe 3 xboxs every 2 weeks and we have a storage room with almost 200 xboxs in it that will never sell, all the PS3 games and wii games are always sold out before i can get them.

as for the controllers… half a isle of PS3 Controllers and 1/4 wiis controllers and 1/4 360s controllers, guess what?! theres always no PS3 / Wii controllers. and more then 3/4s the 360 controllers are still there.

lately i think most walmarts have been told to (atleast mine has) been told to get rid of as many Sixxaxis controllers as possible since Sony will be releasing the new controllers soon (or are supposed to and if they dont well Sony fans will have to wait for them to come out to get a new controller)

    • Tanker9111 says:

Edit: as i said i dont hate Xbox, i own 1 of them with halo 3 and GoW so that should atleast say im not dissing Xbox :)

    • Well, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to get rid of the controllers, even if it means selling them under your competitions brand name. Of course, I could see a unaware mom picking up the controller thinking it was an xbox controller. I know my mom would.

    • I had seen it in real life :(
