There’s a scourge spreading from the real world to the online playground. The ignorant, anonymous game player. Sadly, in the 21st century the ignorant and stupid continue to breed and allow their offspring to go online to spread their ignorance and stupidity.
What happened to the good ole days when online gaming was done by an elite group of open minded nerds?
Since the release of Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, I’ve noticed that there is a lot of racial slurs and just s*** talking on XBL. Maybe Rainbow 6 Vegas wasn’t that bad since you could kick the offender, and with Lono leading a room all glitchers and hate mongers were usually expediently kicked.
Last weekend during gamer night, it was unusually bad, so I decided to create a little guide for those who need a little help enduring the stupidity.
Having said that it’s time to guide you through the sea of ignorance. Use this to identify, marginalize and report the A-Holes online.
Obnoxious noise makers – The people that feel the need to sing or just makes noises in to the mic while they play. The only thing you can do with these guys is hit the mute button. They cannot be stopped. Their stupidity will run rampant until they leave the room. Be sure to report.
Check out the rest on the next page!

second last line = best ever
PSn ftl
Excepting the Noisemaker, these guys make me laugh.
I’m a Straight guy, whiter than Cool Whip and proud of my Beliefs, so the people have nothing on me.
I love to wait for the usual”you suck/blow*insert organ*!!)and say”You betcha pal!”
I cherish the silence as the try to understand my willingness to acknowledge their crap.
And you forgot one guy, The Pig, the one who thinks you are a Prude because of your opinion on Fornication, and will not rest until everyone on LIVE knows this.
I recommend the same as you, have at least on friend in-room at all times, backup can help, they keep you from blowing up, and give you someone to hate these guys to.
Laugh, mute, ignore, report. solves every thing.
PSN has the same problem….Cant we just get along and agree the wii would be a better place for them?
Hahaha, that would be hilarious! “You suck nunchuck, you colored Mii character!!” the drunk trailer trash would shout to the 9 year olds!
When I was playing Prey online, one kid came in and for five minutes straight he only said “You suck balls” over & over again. When another 3 or 4 guys told him to shut up, the kid would say “I can’t shut up because you suck balls, you suck balls, you suck…” and so on. What’s worse is that he wouldn’t leave.
Finally, someone took the time to look through their recent players list and mute each person in the room one by one. Once he found out, he let us know who it was and so we all muted him.
Props to Bungie for making it easy to instantly mute players while still in-game. That should be a standard now.
Luckily, I haven’t had to deal with any of these people while playing Warhawk (mainly because I don’t use the headset and usually have the volume turned down). However, I would be shocked if this wasn’t a problem on both XBL and PSN.
“Hey a-hole, why don’t you shut yer mouth and go check the tire pressure on your house.” is pure LMAO material, I’m so using that.
My GOD, thank you for this. I remember when I first got on LIVE it wasn’t like this and most of my friends I met back those good ol’ days . We used to talk about upcoming games and life in general. The lobby as a whole would participate and if someone was a douche they were subsequently kicked.
thanks for the heads up for when i join XBL guys.
I look forth to the racist guys and PWNING them non-stop
I don’t want this to come out the wrong way. But I know it will. But to be honest it is mostly Americans who fall into these categories. I am an Australian and rarely do I notice other Aussies partaking in this style of ignorance (granted some do though). Even English gamers are generally well behaved. While I love playing against Americans ( I have quite a few on my friends list that love telling what games they have that I am still waiting on down here), I know that most of my Aussie friends sign collectively when we hear an pre-pubescent American has join our game. Knowing that firstly they are going to complain about their lag (it a room full of Australian, one of us is hosting… of course there is lag). I know that there are some great American’s out there… its just hard to find you guys!
I still remember the times when only the people with brain were capable to play online….. sigh… I guess that’s why I cancelled my XBL account and create my PSN one, I have found clever, and smart people in the PSN. I guess only the smart people is buying the PS3.
hey guys,
I got XBL back around 2004, and man this stuff was slowly rising. I was addicted as hell to Splinter Cell Pandora Tommarow, which in my opinion has the most immersive and thought provoking maps. The game had amazing graphics, and you got to know the second guy on your team rather well, it was cool. I NEVER had a problem with trash talkers in that game. Then Halo 2 came out, I played that for two weeks, and all of a sudden, a planet of just complete assholes crashed on ours, hooking up their xbox’s, and getting on XBL. They are there to completely belittle people, and are downright irrating, (as everyone knows) but I know what the people are talking about, with the whole “open minded nerds” thing. It really WAS (past tense) a place where people can have fun, and no BS occured.
It just angers me to think how much it changed. Why can’t there be like moderators of some sort that can just suspsend their accounts? It seems like those who really SHOULD be penalized are NEVER penalized.
I really do miss the old days.
switch to the Playstation Network….lol but asholes..dont have 600 bucks laying around…lol thank god..
Don’t worry, the A-holes will come to the PSN. It’s unstoppable.
If we all switch, so will they.
I am all American, and I agree that many of the a-holes are American. Though I’m not sure if this is a culture gap, or a sign of the general Live demographic.
Well when I was playing garrys mod online some kid joined and was blaring brittney spears music started creating explosives and generally creating so much stuff to lag the game. Us real gamers barricaded ourselves in the white room and we were saying you will get banned. He kept saying I have a right to be here too, then one of the refugees mentioned that applejak should be getting on soon. 5 min later applejak (an admin) logged on and he said” WTF have you done” the kid said stuff like I can do what I want, He left and we got a notification that he had been perm banned from the server =)
Why cent XBL have admin’s like that?
Scream time in Call of Duty 4 bugs me. We’re all familiar with the time during the loading screen when gamertags are not shown, and people feel free to scream, cuss, and whatever. When I can see their name and broadcast I “avoid” ‘em.
Another thing, avoid and/or report these people (depending on how bad they are). I avoid the squeakers and the screamers, and report/avoid the racists.
Kalroy
I haven’t been on Xbox Live for very long, so far i also haven’t crossed paths with the a-holes either. Hopefully it will stay that way for me.
You’d be more vulnerable to the ‘Your Mum’ jokes than most Dave…
And you missed out ‘133+ 5p34k Guy’ on those PC games that still use typing to communicate.
This crap is nothing new but it’s still irritating and one of my favorite rants. I’m 56 yo and have heard all I ever want to of racist, homophobic, boasting A-holes! They’ve always been there but the anonymity of any online service just fuels their stupidity. Gaming online is now an appliance and you take the good with the bad I guess. I used to be a PC gamer but the constant upgrading and system requirements made console gaming a great option. I remember back with XBOX 1 playing MotoGP and having numbnuts hiding off track just to wreck the other riders friggin’ stupid. I would suggest anyone who finds this stuff as irritating as I do play with friends only (generally) There are many adult clans (groups) out here that are an oasis if you are as frustrated as I am. :=)
Check my XBL profile if you want a few places (clans) to checkout!
I dont know about you guys but I full heartedly love people who act like dicks on xbox live. Not only does it let me act like a dick to them but I also get to argue with a total stranger. Some of the best memories from xbox that I had was the verbal fights me and my friends would get in with people on Halo2. Most of those people who say racist and homophobic stuff dont really mean it their just trying to start a fight. Just fight back and make them look like douche bags. The reason people turn their mics off or mute people is cause their timid and dont know how to debate. Just go with it and you’ll find that its really fun.
It’s not timidity it’s disgust! I’m NOT timid when I tell people I don’t want to hear that sh*t! It’s not funny it’s degrading. Listening to that crap is not fun for me anytime. No one should have to listen to sh*t like that. Hell, I swear with the best of them but if I know someone is is in the room that would be offended I try to tone it down. It’s just using some common civility! I think that’s the bottom line we may be missing from this discourse CIVILITY!
@endeavor
you must be one of them.
I actually agree with endeavor and his post embodies what we were talking about. Don’t ignore the racists, the noise makers and other idiots, go after them, let them know that what they’re doing ain’t cool. Make them quit. Report them, aggravate them. I go out of my way to take those guys on and I encourage everyone to do the same, as long as you do it without resorting to their level.
@Lono (love u btw)
True, but the only way I can see you go against these people without ‘resorting to their level’ is pwnin them on the battlefield, but then again, some people go on xbl just to be able to antagonize people (@endeavor)
Good article with noble intentions,
but why in gods name bringing with the last line
(”or switch to the Playstation Network”) the
same prejudices up yourself?
What does it say about you, when you own a 360 or a PS3? What does it say about you if you are from USA, UK or Sweden? Nada, rien, nothing…
It is tricky to judge other for small things… in the end maybe just to make a statement that you are better than they are…
I’m not quite sure what to classify this under but I was in a pregame lobby on CoD4 and someone who sounded around the age of 10-12 kept telling everyone his sister was Hannah Montana. Everyone was laughing at him, he was getting pissed off and yelling that it was true. It was pretty funny.
Whoever made a game with open mics is an IDIOT. The anonymous, online jerk is now able to make everyone hear his BS. Even worse, I cant talk to anyone when Im playing without the whole world hearing it. Take some advice from SOCOM and put a damn Push to talk button on the controller. patch it if you have to and BAM, people will use it to cooperate instead of turning the thing off and leaving it.
