Wavebird Flying Away

It seems like just yesterday the Nintendo gave birth to one of the most revolutionary controllers of our time. It may not have been pretty looking or rumbly but when it came to wirelessness it sure did one helluva job. I still remember the first time I used one and just being in pure awe at the liberating freedom of wireless gaming.

Unfortunately, it seems that Nintendo has grown tired of the lovable Wavebird, because it has been reported that they will no longer be shipping new ones to retailers. While most people won’t see this as a big deal, I can’t help but ask, why right now?

See why it’s horrible timing after the jump.

As most Wii owners know, we are just over a month away from arguably the biggest title release for Nintendo: Super Smash Bros Brawl. Anybody whose anybody among Smash Bros brawlers knows darn well that the only way to play the new game will be with a classic gamecube controller. There’s just no arguing this.

There is no way you’ll be able to pull off the oh so important split second moves with the wiimote and nunchuck like you can with a normal controller. That is why I was expecting Nintendo to increase the stock of Wavebirds throughout January leading up to the launch, not go in the exact opposite direction and just completely stop production.

For all you Wii owners out there who are counting down the days until SSBB’s launch, I strongly urge you to go to your local gaming retailers and purchasing a Wavebird (if you can find one), because once they’re gone you’ll regret not having one when you’re getting pwned online.
