It’s a new day, which can only mean one thing: a new record set by Nintendo. This one is quite a doozy though. According to Enterbrain, Nintendo has now crossed the 5 million mark for Wii’s sold in Japan.
Not that impressed? Well you should be, because it remains the fastest selling console in the history of video games even one full year after launch. By doing a little math, that works out to almost 400,000 consoles sold every month. I don’t care who you are, that’s ridiculously impressive.
Hit the jump to see just how amazing Nintendo’s turnaround has been.
To give you an idea of just how successful the Wii is in Japan, all you have to do is look at the number of PS3’s sold, which is 1.8 million. A measly 36% compared to the Wii’s staggering 5 million. Keep in mind this is the country that was absolutely dominated by Sony during the last gen consoles. Right before the launch of the PS3 and Wii, Sony had boastfully sold 21 millions PS2’s compared to Nintendo’s pathetic 4 million Gamecubes.
Flash forward just over one year and Nintendo’s market share has gone from a miserable 15% to a staggering 67%. No wonder Nintendo’s stocks are through the roof right now.
The sad thing is there’s no end in sight. Even after the holidays, Wii’s are still selling faster than condoms on prom night.
Oh yeah, the Xbox 360 is about to break 600k consoles sold. You’ll reach that elusive 1 million mark one day Microsoft. I have faith in you. Chin up.

FOR THE LAST TIME THE WII IS NOT A GAME MACHINE IT’S A TOY/GIMMICK/JOKE.
I can not believe that the ps3 and the xbox 360 can’t outsell such a throwback to the gaming industry.

And what determines whether something is a game machine or a joke? The market. If a product fails, then it obviously was a joke. However, since the Wii is doing so well, that should clue you in to the fact that it is, in fact, a good platform. It’s simple economics. The market kills bad products. The Wii is alive in thriving. Therefore, it is a good product, no matter what your blind fanboyism tells you.

The proof is in the game sales and for the wii what game has sold well besides mario galaxy , wii fit and wii sports. 3 games do not make a console or a game machine. The fact that 2 of those so called games (wii fit and sports) are not anything more than gimmicks and the wii sales will fall when people get tired of these gimmicks and will want more out of their games. What am I a fanboy of ? games ?

The Wii is a $250.00 toy labeled a future gaming machine in contention with PS3 and 360. 3rd party support is supposedly high but thegames they are cranking out is ridiculous. Even Brawl has an option to use a GC controller for those who dont want to use the probably ridiculous Wii controls.
Those kiddie consoles like Leapster come out every year, are they next gen?

I apologize if I sound like a fanboy all i’m trying to say is that people will get sick of these types of games over time.Swinging your arms around like a maniac is fun at first then you grow up and move onto something else.

Well, it is a “must have game/exclusive” that will sell a system for me. The Wii has Zelda, Metroid, Mario……triple A titles that I have.
Now with that said, I will get a PS3 when MGS4 comes out. Until then, all I do is play my 360.

The wii itself is cool. But the majority of the games out for it right now are junk. That is the problem.

@ Patrick, jsut because it is aimed at a different audience doesn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t mean its not a games console.
The Wii is getting flamed because it is catering for the audience microsoft and Sony left out when they went \\\\\\\\
