Japan to Blame for Nintendo’s Change?

Wii Sports Godzilla

Along with the news yesterday that Nintendo had sold 5 million Wii’s in Japan, Enterbrain also released the list of top 5 Wii games sold:

  1. Wii Sports - 2,663,938
  2. Wii Play - 2,139,084
  3. Mario Party 8 - 1,153,648
  4. Wii Fit - 1,113,626
  5. Super Mario Galaxy - 843,961

Are you freakin’ kidding me?! Isn’t Japan the birthplace of video games? You’d think that a country like that, who has been on the cutting edge of video games since their creation, would be smart enough to see past all of the gimmickyness of the mini-game Wii titles. Instead, they’re doing the exact opposite and embracing them like a long lost child.

Hit the jump for even more disappointing news from Japan.
What makes it even worse, was that Wii Sports doesn’t even come bundled with the system in Japan, which means that over half of the people who own a Wii have willingly put down $40 to buy the game. I’m not saying Wii Sports isn’t fun at times, but $40 of fun?

Then you’ve got Super Mario Galaxy, one of the highest rated games of all time and it hasn’t even broke 1 million yet. Also, where the heck are Zelda and Metroid? Why in the world are people buying Mario Party 8 over both of those easily superior games?

Don’t even get me started on Wii fit. Look at one of the newest commercials airing in Japan for it:

This is the crap Japan is buying over Mario and Zelda! It seriously makes me sick. If there were an award for most boring mini-game ever made, this would win so fast that the speed of light would be put to shame.

There is some good news out of all this though. It was released that Japan has by far the lowest attachment rate of any other region. For every console sold they are averaging 3.4 games purchased which, when compared to Europe at 5.6 and North America at 6.9, looks awfully disturbing. Hopefully Nintendo will use their brain and see that these numbers show how Japan is not even close to representing how the rest of the world feels about crappy mini-game titles.

Btw, I want to know how many of you have bought seven or more games for the Wii? Last time I checked there’s only about five good games, tops.

Metroid isn’t released yet in Japan, so you would want to edit that. Other than that I agree with this 100%.

    • 4 Ville Laitinen // Jan 24, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Oh, and games that I have:

      1.Wii Sports (bundled)
      2.Wii play (bundled with controller)
3.Resident Evil 4: Wii edition (wiimake)
      4.Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles
5.Tomb Rider Anniversary: Wii edition (wiimake)
      6.Mario Party 8
      7.Super Paper Mario
      8.Twilight Princess (wiimake)
      9:Super Mario Galaxy

So i have 4 games that are not bundled and not wiimakes of last-gen games, and 1 of em is crap <_<.

    • 5 Frantik // Jan 24, 2008 at 6:49 pm

      -Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
      -Mario Strikers Charged

      -Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
      -Wii Sports
-About 15 or 16 VC games

Although I didn’t get into Metroid Prime 3, I will say that it is a much, much better game than what’s the top sellers in Japan. The Wii is a decent system but there’s plenty of room for improvement.

      Still better than a PS3.

@ Frantic I hope you were being sarcastic because I don’t see how anyone could think the wii better than the PS3.

    • 7 lwelyk // Jan 24, 2008 at 7:43 pm

      1. fire emblem Radiant Dawn
      2.Metroid Prime 3
      3.Mario Galaxy
      4.Super Paper Mario
      5.Elebits
      6.Zelda
      7.GHIII
      8.Zack And Wiki
      9.Wario Ware
      10. Trauma Center: Second Opinion
      11. Trauma Center: New Blood

That plus complete reverse compatibility and VC means I’m happy with my wii.

    • 8 ColdHeat // Jan 24, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Well it makes sense that Nintendo would bundle Wii Sports with the Wii seeing as the attach rate is so low. Maybe the Wii really was made for Japan.

Video games were created at MIT you silly yousti fool.

    • 10 patrick // Jan 24, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Damn I hate the wii . Thanks nintendo for setting back gaming by 2 decades. Maybe you should be the ones apologizing to EA on behalf of FOX news for making them think games are only for kids again. It took a long time for games to evolve and now it’s been destroyed by this inferior console. Maybe next time you could just come to my house and spit in my face. Thanks again nintendo you bastards .

@ rockoutwithmysockout–Sorry, I actually meant what I said. I’m not a fan of the PS3 from first-hand experience since I used to own one. When I look back at having all three systems, the PS3 didn’t thrill me as much as I thought it would. However, the Wii entertained me from the start (just like the 360). I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, it’s just the way I feel.

LOL, is that commercial actually selling consoles by showing a guy sitting on an Ikea scale?

    • 14 Minbad // Jan 25, 2008 at 10:46 am

      Wiiplay
      Zelda
      Warioware
      RE4
      Super Mario Galaxy
      RRR 1 & 2
      RE-Umbrella
      Super Paper Mario
      Excite Truck

But these games, of course, don’t exist :)

    • 15 FlintSteelton // Jan 25, 2008 at 12:14 pm

      1. Zelda
      2. Super Paper Mario
      3. Metroid 3
      4. Mario Galaxy

I bought the GameCube version of Zelda:Twilight Princess since I thought it was better. Instead of using motions for button controls, it used real buttons.

    • 16 FlintSteelton // Jan 25, 2008 at 12:16 pm

And Resident Evil 4 is good, but I haven’t picked it up. So no, I don’t make the 7 games.

    • 17 Rae // Jan 25, 2008 at 2:45 pm

it’s like 28 days later gone 5 million sold later. frightening…i can’t believe games like wii fit are selling in japan! they’re all skinny anyways!

    • 18 Lono // Jan 25, 2008 at 8:11 pm

I don’t think he means that it actually is the birthplace, I’m pretty sure he meant figuratively.

    • 19 Grantly // Jan 25, 2008 at 8:37 pm

      Wii games I have:

      Metroid Prime 3
      Zelda
      Mario Galaxy
      Guitar Hero 3
      Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
      Red Steel
      Mario Pary 8
      Godfather: Blackhand Edition

I managed to pick up as many ok Wii games as I could find. I’m still planning on getting Fire Emblem, Medal of Honor Heroes, NiGHTS, Trauma Center New Blood, No More Heroes, SSBB, and Mario Kart.

    • 20 Alecsander_C // Jan 25, 2008 at 9:54 pm

      1) Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2
      2) Guitar Hero 3 (damn mono sound)
      3) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (cool)
      4) Red Steel (Don’t tell me about it, it just plain sucks, you’d think a FPS with katana would be fun but no, it just sucks and it was a present from an aunt so…)
      5) Resident Evil : Umbrella Chronicles (I HATE the ranking system, I don’t have time to play all stages over and over till I unlock them all)
      6) Super Mario Galaxy (awesome)
7)Some funny name for a controller… Wii Play?? and it came in a pretty box but… with… a game? is it a game?
      8) Wii Sports came with da console

So I have… 3… maybe 4 good games which only 3 are exclusives
