The PSP’s official 3.80 Firmware added loads of cool new features: Internet radio, an official PS1 emulator, etc. The problem was, if you were a homebrew user, you were left in the dark.
Until now.
There’s been a hack attack of epic proportions. This could just be the best news you homebrewers have heard all year.
Why PSP homebrew users will be dancing in the streets after the jump!
Dark Alex, king of the PSP homebrew scene, has risen from the virtual grave to once again rescue his loyal subjects.
Normally once you put your PSP on an open edition (hacker created) firmware, you pretty much said bye-bye to any new features Sony added. You had to wait until an updated homebrew was released, figure out how to install it, and then cross your fingers while performing a voodoo chant that you wouldn’t brick your system.
No more! Dark Alex has made everything a snap.
With his new 3.80 M33 custom firmware, not only do you get the best of both worlds, (homebrew capabilities AND Sony’s latest features) but now even future upgrades should be worry free.
In 3.80 M33 you can update your PSP with the latest homebrew firmwares just like ‘dem Sony loyalists do! Instead of connecting to Sony’s network, you can connect directly to dark-alex.org for future firmwares.
Looks like no matter how hard Sony tries, the homebrew community is here to stay.
As long as Dark Alex doesn’t “quit” again, that is.

Dark Alex needs to switch over to the PS3 now. I would kill for the possibility of an XBMC-like program for my PS3.

PS1 emulation was in long before firmware 3.80, but that point is overshadowed greatly by the fact that Dark Alex _is_ “the man.”
I’m 100% legit with my PSP firmware now but I’ve closely followed his work and I really admire what he’s been able to accomplish with absolutely _zero_ official help from Sony. I mean for the average person, you brick one PSP and it’s game over. But this guy’s single handedly changed the face of homebrew on the PSP.
Unfortunately, and here’s where I draw my line, there’s absolutely no barrier between allowing homebrew and allowing piracy. The PSP is doing better than it ever has, but unfortunately so is piracy.
I keep my PSP “official” for absolute snag-free PSP< ->PS3< ->PS Store interaction and even without homebrew, I find myself completely happy with my PSP. If I had the choice to allow homebrew _without_ the ability to pirate games, I’d be all over it and encouraging everyone else as well.

I don’t have a psp
but it’s pretty cool to have someone doing this for all homebrew guys, what was sony thinking when they made a handheld that was amazing for everything except what it’s actually supposed to be?

I wonder how many PSP’s Alex bricked while working on his magic homebrew?
I have thought about doing it to my PSP, but frankly I don’t have time to play through Final Fantasy VII again.-that and I would probably brick it due to my “mad computer hacking skillz.”

I have been a long time hacker for PSP, since the day it came out, and I found this really good, I’m currently using 3.77 M33 and it’s fantastic, and I am really excited about that feature for the instant updates via dark-alex.org. FANTASTIC!
Why dosen’t SONY just give up, and let the hacks dev for the PSP, because it’s not the illegal stuff like ISO’s that you can stuff on there, but the apps, and mini games too. PERK UP SONY!
