Nintendo Wiis are selling like hotcakes. Everywhere you look, stores are selling out of Wii consoles the moment they put the units on the floor. The games must be selling like crazy too, right? Not so much.
The people whose jobs and well-being depend on their Wii games selling well aren’t happy.
More after the jump.
Goichi Suda, the director of No More Heroes, claims that third-party titles for the Wii aren’t selling in Japan and that only Nintendo titles are selling.
“Whilst the sales weren’t as high as I hoped, other titles for Wii aren’t selling so well either. Only Nintendo titles are doing well. This isn’t just because of the current situation in Japan, as this is happening outside Japan.”
No More Heroes got glowing reviews from critics and still didn’t sell well. Incidents like these will hurt Nintendo in the long run. If Wii fans only buy games from the Mario, Zelda, or Metroid franchises, some other game companies might start designing for other consoles.
Suda also expressed his dislike of the Wii as a casual gamers console.
“Actually I was very surprised about the reality about Wii, because before I was making this game, I wasn’t expecting that Wii would be a console targeted only for non-gamers. I expected more games for hardcore gamers. The reality is different to what I expected.”
Casual gamers buy consoles, hardcore gamers buy games. It’s a fact of life. Nintendo needs to start some franchise building with it’s third party contributors. If the Wii can’t find a way to get it’s third party titles to sell better they might end up being the only one at the party.
There will come a day where everyone gets tired of hanging out with Mario, Link and Samus. They’ll be like the college kids that go to high school parties and have real lives.
Lame.
