Soccer MomProbably not the headline you expected to see at the top spot in our countdown huh?

Too bad, so sad.

Like it or not, the casual gamer became one of the most important target audiences to game makers in 2007. With more disposable income than many hardcore addicts, and fewer preconceptions about new things, the casual gamer is the fat, hungry cow in the feed lot, being herded toward the metal building for an appointment with a bolt stunner.

Time and time again they spend actual dollars and euros on crap that most of us would either laugh at, or find for free, but the one getting the last laugh are the developers. Take Nintendo, who were smart enough to shift at least a portion of their business plan, if not the whole damned thing, to cater to these oblivious movers and shakers.

In an essay that I wrote in August, we talked about these powerful people, and why they should be embraced by hardcore gamers like you.

For bringing about a change in the way that games are made and marketed, and for ultimately keeping the industry from getting out too far ahead of what people are willing, or capable of paying/understanding, the Rise of the Casual Gamer, is our number one gaming moment/event for 2007.

Thanks for the Diggs! Thanks for the Stumbles! Happy 2008!

And the casual gamer wins again. The people who pay $600 for a PS3 and $1000 for a 50in HD LCD TV lose to people who pay $120 for a PS3 and $75 for a used 30in CRT screen.

    • Nobody says:

      Holy crap, $120 PS3s!?

    • Artemis says:

      Nooooooooo!

    • Harag says:

Yeah, it’s a win lose situation. We finally get to number one, but it’s the frickin casual gamer that wins. Ah well.

I actually like that casual gamers are making the industry bigger, more players means making nintendo step up to the plate and say “well… we have all this people so I guess we should take a look at this “Xbox Live” that other company has.

just like gears of war for the PC with the extra boss, the ride getting there was better than the actual moment, but it was a very nice ride. at least it wasn’t like capone’s vault.

    • hentai2021 says:

i just thought of something really bad, if there becomes too many casual gamers, the games made will appeal to mostly them as there is more money in that, i can hear something in the distance.*a bell tolls*

    • commander121 says:

the casual gamer do promote bad games but at the sametime they are pouring more money into the industry and there for the industry has more money for us.

    • commander121 says:

all hardcore gamers were once casual and so this could boost the hardcore community numbers greatly

    • The Ploogle says:

Hooray for us! I’m a casual gamer myself, but enjoy hard-core games as well. I enjoy everything from Oblivion and Animal Crossing to Smash Bros and Pokemon. :P

Well, there went my good standing on this site!

    • Doc says:

      @Ploogle…

That implies that you had any good stnading to begin with….

Sorry…. you left yourself open there.

    • Tloor says:

commander121: I like your quote “all hardcore gamers were once casual” :)
