Unreal Tournament III - PS3 over PC? Maybe.

December 13th, 2007 · 12 Comments

Unreal Tournament III.jpgWhen you think twitch shooters, Unreal Tournament might come to mind. When you think Unreal Tournament, you probably think of PC gaming.  Well, with a version out on the PS3, the question is: could Unreal Tournament III for the PS3 outperform the PC version?

Hold up now, I don’t mean in the graphical horsepower or framerate sense, I mean sales and players. Although make no mistake, the PS3 version of UT III looks great.

The PC version UT III has a fairly distinct layer of cobwebs covering its online lobbies. I’ve read numerous reports of the number of people playing the game at any given time barely breaks one hundred. Globally. As in the entire planet Earth!

You see on the PC, UT III launched into a severely crowded market of top notch FPS titles while on the PS3, UT III may actually rule the roost this holiday season in the FPS genre.

Find out how, after the jump!

Haze, which was set to strut its stuff this December, has been pushed back to Q1 ‘08 leaving Epic’s baby loads of shoulder room. It’ll be interesting to see if the number of PS3 players actually bests the number of PC players.

A couple of interesting things to note (firsts I believe) is that the PS3 version of UT III allows users to download and install mods (user created content that can range from levels, characters, weapons all the way down the scripting game changing events and behaviors). This has the potential to give UT III extremely long legs on the PS3 (and Epic surely did that on purpose).

The other notable thing about the game is that it is the first high-profile console FPS to fully support mouse/keyboard controls using standard mice and keyboards (none of that Joyfrag “keyboard emulating gamepad” crap). Along with this capability is full filtering for online matches if you want to avoid (or limit yourself to) people with controller or keyboard input.

I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled to see what the communities think of this game and what they do with it. Early reports from the gaming press say Epic did a phenomenal job on the PS3 version and if nothing else, this is proof positive that Unreal Engine 3 can be made to do impressive things on the PS3 hardware. You hear that Ubisoft? You hear that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 developers?

I didnt buy my $3000 Alienware for no reason, I think I’ll stick with my mouse and keyboard for this one.

It’s a pity that the PS3 version isn’t out in Europe till next year. I might have to divide my attention between it and Haze & co.

@ Dejanus: unless you bought a laptop (which for that price would be their lower end models, not going to last that long) then you have wasted your money, you could easily could have build a game destroying, 4 crossfire system with that load of cash and still had change to buy a 32″ screen or 2 22″ screens for the real Wide screen experiance

I bought it a year ago, its an Area 51, I hada few of my buddies look at it, and they seemed fairly content.

And Im including the monitor, modem, and extra graphics card in that price. Along with overclocking, ithinkits a fair price.

I wouldn’t pay $3000 for a PC. I paid about $600 for mine. It’s mid-range and I made it over a year ago. It plays the UT3 demo really well, but I think I’m buying it on PS3. There are mods, KB/M, and more people. I think it would be a better online experience.

No, you didn’t bought it for no reason. The reason is you are a MS retard. 3000 bucks for playing games, get a life and get out of your parents house. Grow up!

Did you calculate the price for the (horrible) OS for you machine in that?

PS3 has teh cell Powah as well. 600 bucks to cover everything, and less chances of viral infections or jumping through hoops to get things working. Pop in the Disc and you get opitmal performace. $600.00 bucks isnt looking so bad when you compare it to the money would have to spend to get the same quality on a PC.

      We’re back to $600 now?

Last I checked, you could walk in off the street and buy a PS3 _and_ the game for less than that (the PS3 is only $399/$499 now, not $599). ;)

There is plenty of players online for PC version - hte problen is - there was 3 beta patches, 1 official patch, and original game. So Versions are incomplitable - and some ppl simply not updated game\servers.

On latest patch - I playd VCTF an hour ago - there is about 50-60 servers and 500-800 players. DM is more populated.

NoneOfYourBusiness - PC gaming is another culture. If you’re not a PC gamer and all your life were with consoles - you cannot understand the possibilities. They are endless. Plus better controls. Belive me. I have a kickass PC and X360.
