E3 2005 saw one of the biggest public faux pas known to recent gaming. Sony pushed off “too good to be true” pre-rendered Killzone 2 concept footage as if it were actual gameplay footage. They would soon regret this decision as the Xbox 360 game to market with “real” games and it became known that the Killzone 2 footage was basically just “a movie.”

Find out if Sony learned the errors of their ways, after the jump…

Fast forward to March, 2007, at the Game Developer’s Conference where a select group of gaming journalists were shown some emerging PS3 development tools that used the Killzone 2 engine but was disclaimed as “not necessarily representative of Killzone 2 in-game graphics.” The immediate buzz after this demo session was one of genuine concern as many people were less an impressed by what they saw and despite the repeated disclaimers by Sony’s Phil Harrison that they did not just see Killzone 2, the buzz for “whatever Sony would eventually show” was severely hampered by that presentation.

At a pre-E3 event, gaming journalists were finally shown pre-alpha code of Killzone 2 running in real-time on PS3 hardware and not only were most of the journalists impressed, they were impressed that they were impressed. A select few got to actually man the controller for some hands on time. Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal stated he was “thoroughly impressed” with what he saw in his hands on time with the game.

Since the E3 debut of Killzone 2, we’ve been seeing more and more media and tidbits trickling in and while Killzone 2’s buzz would certainly be more pronounced if it weren’t for another title by the name of Call of Duty 4 showing off it’s impressive visuals at about the same time as Killzone 2. (and beating it to market by what will likely be a full year). I think a lot of eyes will be on this game in the fall of ‘08.

That’s why Killzone 2’s E3 Footage Actually Looking Good clocks in at #53 on the Sarcastic Gamer Top 100 Gaming Moments of 2007.
