Updates and patches are at the very core of what keeps MMO’s viable. Correcting problems and adding new content that keeps players hooked is very important.
Of course, it’s equally important to make sure your update/patch/expansion does not add more problems then it fixes.
*cough* Galaxies *cough*
Well, the boys over at CCP studios seem to have been out drinking the day that key piece of gaming support lore was discussed. Eve Online, the lukewarm space sim MMO, has just suffered one of the worst update-related disasters in recent memory.
Find out what the heck happened, after the jump!
December 6th, 2007, XP gamers attempted to start up their PC’s only to find that, whoops, their computer was not feeling so good. Eve players who updated their game via the Premium Trinity patch before 4:00 a.m. GMT, quickly realized something was terribly wrong. In addition to adding new content, the Trinity patch came with a sweet extra touch; it deleted their OS’s boot.ini file! Which meant that their OS was, for all intents and purposes, toast.
According to an official post on the Eve Online forums: “If you upgraded from the Classic client to the Premium client, using the content upgrade…” gamers were at risk of losing this key file. The problem has apparently been addressed now and only the initial batch of XP gamers were affected.
Still, how the hell could they have missed something like that? Was their troubleshooting team asleep? I’d hate to be the scapegoat on this one.

This makes me want to play WoW. Yes, I just wrote that.
