BioShock Widescreen

FINALLY! After three and a half loooong months, the day that I have been impatiently waiting for is here! I’m not sure how many of you know about the widescreen mode debacle in BioShock, so let me fill you in, after the jump.

Everybody knows that widescreen is by far superior to full-screen. It’s more natural for our eyes to look at and it lets us see more. That is why almost every TV and monitor you buy nowadays comes in widescreen. Everybody loves it.

When it was exposed that 2K Games had released BioShock without a widescreen mode, there were A LOT of pissed off people (myself being one of them). Not only had they released a game in freakin’ 2007 without a widescreen mode, but they did it in the worst possible way. For anybody that was using a widescreen monitor it would take the 4:3 picture and cut some off from the top and bottom and then stretch the remaining image to fill the sides. That’s right, you actually saw LESS on a nice big widescreen HDTV compared to an old-school crappy standard definition TV.

Worst idea EVER.

Finally today, they have released the Xbox 360 patch so that it runs in natural widescreen mode like it should have from the beginning. Just look at how much area is added to the above image. It’s breathtaking. Now I can finally dust off my copy of BioShock that I bought at launch that I haven’t even played through the first level with since I found out about this travesty.

Mmm, I love me some widescreen Little Sister harvesting.

I think they went a little too wide though. I notice that while holding the wrench, you can see what I think is your shoulder in the right corner of the screen. Not that it is a big deal. Its just weird looking and distracting.
