Let’s just say that you own Guitar Hero III, I know, I know, let’s just pretend. Put down the Rock Band guitar… Let’s say that someone, not you, but a friend you know buys Rock Band and you both love to play guitar. Sadly, the box only comes with one. Hey, Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars do about the same thing. So, if you plug it into the USB hub it should work, right?
Find out, after the jump.
WRONG!
Harmonix saw this as a problem and out of the kindness of their collective hearts were going to fix it. They created a patch for the PS3 so that those that have the PS3 version could rock without having to go buy another Rock Band guitar. They were just going to give this away. Damn that’s awesome.
“Harmonix and MTV Games believe in an open standard philosophy of hardware and game compatibility. We think that there should be interoperability between music instrument controllers across all music games. This is clearly in the best interest of consumers, game developers and console manufacturers and will only help to grow the music game genre as well as inspire innovation and creativity.”
It’s finished and ready to go. Sony has had it for sometime now. They received it, approved it, and then one of the biggest cock blocks in history went down.
“Two weeks ago, Harmonix created a software patch for the Sony PLAYSTATION 3 version of Rock Band that allowed for guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision’s Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band. The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the release of the compatibility patch. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision’s continued objection.”
Oh, damn. It’s on now, Harmonix is going to…do nothing. This is a sad day for fake rockers everywhere.
Looks like “there can be only one” guitarist. Unless someone wants to go pick up that extra guitar.

Solution: Play it on the 360 because everything works perfectly together on that system.

Ummm, since when can you install non-Sony-approved patches on your PS3?

I originally wanted GH III and Rock Band on the PS3 because, well, frankly I’ve been left with a non-functioning 360 for weeks at a time… MULTIPLE times… and I have a personal obligation to support quality multiplatform games on MY platform of choice. So what has this situation done for me? It’s convinced me not to _buy_ either frickin’ game. I’ve rented GH III (take that loss of a sale Asstivision!) and I’m borrowing a friend’s Rock Band. Both on the 360. This way, if my 360 breaks, I just return all the games to their rightful owners and keep on playing my PS3.
I won’t lie, I did ask Santa for both games… on the 360. But since it won’t technically be _MY_ money being spent, I don’t feel I’ve broken my self-imposed rules.
And I blame both EA/MTV/Harmonix and Asstivision/Red Octane for me not purchasing their games, and especially for not purchasing them on the PS3. Insert bullet, aim straight down, FIRE!

Well, since Activision Blizzard is now the biggest game corporation in the world, they can do whatever they want. And they’re probably going to try and pull some sort of Microsoft.
