A Small Request

December 20th, 2007 · 38 Comments

Hey gang,

I feel awful for asking anything of you after the generosity you showed to PMPB when his home was ransacked, but this isn’t something I can take care of myself.

tori.gifFor a couple of years now, I have been friends with the most amazing young lady. Victoria (Tori) is 15, and is in the middle of her THIRD bout with leukemia. Those of you who are GCN regulars might remember that we did a game drive for Tori last year, that yielded amazing results and made her REALLY long stay in the hospital much more comfortable. After she beat her leukemia she relapsed, but not before she gave all of the games that were donated to her, to other kids who were still in treatment.

This year, she’s found herself back in the hospital, for nearly 80 straight days now, and she is fighting like the hero that she is. Whenever I visit I notice how little there seems to be to do in that hospital room. So I wrote to Microsoft and without hesitation they sent a ton of Xbox 360 games for Tori. Now she’s going to need an Xbox 360 to play them on. I am hoping that I can now turn to the Sarcastic Gamer community, and GCN as a whole, to help make one more miracle happen this holiday season. This is very last minute, but some other plans I had fell through.

Although the Texas Children’s Hospital has done a LOT to make kids as comfortable as possible, the electronic entertainment could use a bit of a facelift. You can’t hook anything into the TV’s, and the only thing they have to watch movies on is a VCR. So what I’d like to do, is get Tori an inexpensive portable screen and an Xbox 360 Arcade bundle. All told it looks like we’ll need about $400.00 to make this happen. I will personally pick up the difference between what is donated an what is needed to make this happen. If we go over, we’ll get Tori an Amazon gift card to pick out some other stuff to keep her occupied. If I could cover this myself, I wouldn’t be asking.

toripinkwig.jpgOn behalf of my good friend, Tori, thank you in advance for taking a few moments to consider making a contribution.

If you are interested in donating, please PayPal your contribution to jeromyadams at gmail.com

At this point, it’s a little too late to accept any other form of donation, as the holidays are right around the corner.

UPDATE:

We’re about 75 dollars from our goal. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far!

I met Tori through the Radiothon that my radio stations put on every year. If you’d like to hear what Tori sounds like, and why I think she is so amazing, listen to this montage that I put together. You can hear her positive attitude blow right through the cancer and come spilling out. She is truly an amazing young lady.

UPDATE 11:30 pm Central, Thursday

You DID IT! You blew past 400 (which is good cause we actually needed 475 to make this work) and donated more than $530.00 in just a few hours! Dave and I are going to go pick up Tori’s loot tomorrow, and the leftover money will be used to send her for some online shopping at Amazon. You guys have done an amazing thing here today. Thank you to everyone that donated. The way of the internet is that some of you are just finding out about this and might still want to donate, and I encourage you to do so. One thing that teenage girls like to do is go shopping, and since Tori has spent a totally unfair portion of her teenage years thus far in a hospital room, the more ammo we can give her for Amazon, the better. Dave said it best in one of the comments below…. We do indeed have the best readers in the world, and we belong to an incredible community. Thanks to all of the great sites that contributed to this. I’ll name names later. In the meantime… Thank you….

Just… Thank you.

Doc

UPDATE:  2:00 PM Central, Friday

The gifts are purchased, and thanks to your overwhelming generosity, Tori is going shopping too!  We got her an Xbox 360 Arcade, an extra wireless controller (pink of course), the flip screen, and a ton of AA batteries.

All said and done you guys donated more that $740.00 for Victoria’s Christmas surprise, and after Dave and I threw our money onto the pile, Tori is going to go on an online shopping spree at Amazon with a gift card worth $350.00.

I am going over to see her today, and will be deliver the “goods”.  She has no idea this is coming.  She thinks we’re just going to play another few rounds of Battleship (She leads the tournament by 1 win currently…. which I plan to change lol.)

I went to be last night thinking that Sarcastic Gamer and its website friends had the best readers in the world…. This morning I woke up KNOWING it.  More than three hundred dollars poured in AFTER we announced that we hit our goal!  Unreal!

Pictures will be posted this evening (hopefully).  I want you to SEE what you did.

Love you guys.

Doc

Thanks to every one of you who made room on your holiday shopping list for Tori. She is going to be SO surprised.

      See ya on Xbox Live!

    • 27 Alecsander_C // Dec 21, 2007 at 2:25 am

How come when they look at the gamer community they forget to point out “gamers help other people, AT LEAST to make their staying at a hospital more comfortable, and all they see is “violence”?

Hope you get well soon Tori, although I can’t donate any money, I can donate you my best wishes and hopes.

Gamers united. Get well soon young gamerette

    • 28 mrpuggywuggy // Dec 21, 2007 at 2:55 am

    • 29 Zimbaa // Dec 21, 2007 at 4:17 am

Though lacking of a job I made a contribution.

Get well soon adn best wishes Tori.

    • 30 mattmne // Dec 21, 2007 at 8:21 am

Yea, so since everyone’s gone above and beyond do you guys think you actually could get her a Premium, or maybe an Arcade Bundle with a Gold Membership? I dont know how the hospital is setup for internet access so its just a thought. I just thought playing online is something she’d prob enjoy.

      Get Well Quick Tori

    • 31 Ablative Meatshield // Dec 21, 2007 at 8:27 am

She’s already getting the Arcade with a free 20gig tossed in (I’d recently upgraded my system to a 120, so what am I gonna do with a newly formatted 20Gig HDD?).

Better to donate it to this cause than EBay it, I say.

Tori, I hope one of the games Microsoft sent was COD4. We need more people showing up pwning Lono… :)

Get better kiddo, and make sure you let us know what your gamertag ends up as…

    • 32 dissonent // Dec 21, 2007 at 8:45 am

You won’t find anything like this in Gamespot’s community I’ll tell you that much.

    • 34 Vluhd // Dec 21, 2007 at 10:37 am

This is absolutely awesome. So many people getting together to help one young girl. This will really be the highlight of my holiday season. Expanding on what Dirty said, you should change the current slogan to : Sarcastic Gamer, unlike Gamespot, we actually care!
      :P
