Goodbye “Core.” Hello “Arcade.”

Also known as the “We Love Casual Gamers Too” bundle.

Toward the end of the summer, Microsoft must have taken a look at Nintendo Wii sales and said “Get me some of that!” because that’s exactly what the Arcade tries to do.

Not that this is necessarily a bad thing. Besides a cheap price, the Wii is doing so well because it appeals to the now coveted “casual gamer.” These are simply people who don’t normally play video games. Everything about the Wii is very simple to learn, and easy to play.

With this concept in mind, the Xbox 360 Arcade was born … for $279.99.

This most recent SKU actually makes some improvements over Microsoft’s previous low-end bundle. In the Arcade bundle you get a wireless controller instead of a wired one (whose idea was that anyway?), a memory card (basically a teaser for the Hard Drive) and 5 XBLA games, (Pac-Man Championship Edition being by far the winner of the group).

Now all Microsoft needs to do is fake a shortage and they’ll be all set.

That’s why the 360 Arcade Bundle checks in at number 93 in our top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!
