Top Gaming Moment # 83: 2007
Source: GameSpot
According to Nintendo, their portable gaming console, the DS, has sold more than 6 million units in the United States over the past year. If Nintendo is to be believed (NPD numbers are yet to come in), the DS reigns supreme as the best selling portable of 2007.
Find out why it made the list, after the jump!
Gamers were apparently wowed by the incredible graphics, wondrous DS gaming pen and yes, count’em, TWO screens, allowing the DS to sweep the portable gaming market. OMG! With so many groundbreaking and original (rofl) titles like Nintendogs, Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl, New Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart, there seems to be no stopping this cheap (I’m just talking about the price tag, honest) Nintendo product. Rather than purchasing the multi functional, modern graphics, and high tech Sony PSP; most portable gamers went the inexpensive, low end, countless classic ported titles, DS route.
That’s why the incredible (yet baffling to me) sales of the Nintendo DS checks in at number 83 in our top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!

PacMan… I try to go along with some of your posts, I really do… but your opinions and my opinions are about as far apart as it gets in the gaming world.
Yes the DS has *shocker* traditional Nintendo titles like MarioKart DS, Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass, and New Super Mario Brothers (all of which are great games, btw), but it’s also seen great third party titles like Puzzle Quest, Trauma Center, Contra 4, and a couple of really solid Castlevania games.
The DS is outselling the PSP by a factor of ten because just like the PS3, Sony thought hardware would sell the system alone their portable platform. The fact that it’s super cheap to own probably doesn’t hurt the DS sales any, either.

itsburnsie Speaks the truth. Pacman, I only agree with about 10% of your article. And thats just the sales figures.

It’s Mr. PolarBear to you guys…
I should state that I just bought this game for my son (it’s going in his stocking, I picked it up used for $20)
I think the basis of PMPB’s beef is absolutely valid. Predominantly on Nintendo systems, the “killer apps” are Nintendo’s first party games. And predominantly, the bulk of those are either “this year’s version of the same game” or slight tweaks of previous versions. Don’t get me wrong, they _do_ put out new stuff, but how many of the *Kart and *Kong Racing games are _really_ that different than the ones that came before them?
At the end of the day, we’re all entitled to our opinions. I largely agree with PMPB but I bought the damned game anyway… what does that say about me? BTW, our house has 3 DSs and 1 PSP (am I helping the ratio any?)

Wow. Well I wrote this article from my perspective, SG is not a care bear love fest for everything.
DS lovers, chill, you won and the numbers prove it. I admit I even play a DS game or two. I don’t really get it as I am a hardcore gamer, but the value of the DS is obvious to any but the most close minded.
Props DS.

Well this is basically what was going on back with the game boy, the lynx, game gear and nomad (back then) nintendo won because of the games and batteries, just top of my mind I can think of 3 games that make me want to buy a psp and god of war chains of olympus is not even out yet, on the other hand although some titles are cheesy you also have: mario kart DS, phantom hourglass, metroid prime hunters, mario 64 ds, and more A list portable games than the PSP.

Everywhere you go you see people playing games one handed..

The PSP is expensive. The games are limited. The accessories and other functions are pointless when you most likely already own another gadget that does the same thing.
The DS doesn’t win because of casual vs. hardcore gaming. It wins because it focuses on games.
