Bioshock. A game many people consider to be the “Game of the Year” FPS that happens to be exclusive to the 360 almost wasn’t. Or won’t always be. Or might not always be. Ah hell, who knows for sure.

At one point there was a feature written for UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine regarding Bioshock and then magically it disappeared (although scans of it reported leaked to the net). As far as we can tell, Microsoft bought exclusivity from 2K games.

Over the months there have been several persistent rumors that Bioshock is/was indeed in development and the game would eventually see the light of day on the PS3. Then they would be summarily debunked by someone “in the know” only to be brought up again by someone else that knows a guy who has a brother that overheard someone say they were working on a PS3 version. Even Ken Levine took the “easy” way out at one point by neither “confirming nor denying” the existence of PS3 Bioshock development. That’s enough to make Microsoft’s GamerScore Blog guys proud!

Microsoft has been accused of trying to buy their place in the videogame landscape and frankly, if they can pick and choose titles like Bioshock, they might be able to do it. While most companies are concerned with making money, apparently Microsoft is a little more concerned with stacking the deck in their favor first. I can’t say I blame them. They’ve got billions to burn (and are doing so) on the videogame market. When/if Bioshock comes to the PS3, will it be too little too late? The game, otherwise a flash in the pan by today’s standards (people played it and in two weeks it was “no big thang” again…), hit at the sweetest spot it possibly could have; the late summer dead spot and it rocked everyone when they weren’t really expecting it.

Will be see a Bioshock 2? The plot was wrapped up nicely, but money usually talks louder than story lines or plots. Will the PS3 get the original Bioshock while the 360 gets Bioshock 2? My guess is until we actually hold Bioshock for the PS3 in our grubby little mitts, rumors of its existence and impending release will continue.
